        1. ilexx says:

You see its not that real shit don’t sell, its the system that functions like that and the people that subscribe to this kind of thinking that are the problem.

Its the system that doesn’t support GOOD music and when it doesn’t sell you believe it was because it wasn’t commercial enough. Don’t be fooled.

Doesn’t J. Cole prove that theory wrong right now? Right now he about to do bigger numbers in his first week than Ross did with both albums first week combined.

Kendrick went Platinum with good music that his label fully supported. The BS been done in my eyes for awhile, ppl want that good music back and they will go out and buy it.

Right now its about building a fan base that is loyal too your brand because they identify with that brand. Say what you want but Cole did that thru a solid mix tape run, decent to good albums depending on who u ask and now a solid cohesive album that is gonna sell well and he didnt sell out in any definition of the term.

Other rappers can do this too, it ain’t really a secret. Build your fanbase organically through releasing music that is consistent with your brand identity, tour and touch your fans, be passionate about your art and most of all, release quality music over quantity. Yes co-signs help but if you don’t grind for yourself it ain’t gonna work in this day and age.

      4. brandonEP says:

i feel like it’ll get back to that

      5. blackbeltbreeze says:

Nostalgia always 20/20, its more balanced now than it was in the 90s, especially the late 90s. The Internet, Satelite, and Kanye changed the game. There would never be a Freddie Gibbs/Madlib, Royce/Preemo, Kendrick, KRIT, Cole, El P/Killer, Rhapsody/9th back under that platinum album system. None of these one off ep’s would be popping.

      1. WUTANG says:

WHO DA FUCK IS NEIL’S BEST FRIEND’S AUNT?

    1. ThinkOutsideTheBox says:

Everything he said was spiritual. Not everyone can see from this point of view. It was all already written. Kanye said it too: “We the new slaves.” These are the last days. Anyone who knows the Bible knows that they should dwell in Mount Zion & There’s only one true Zion. ZionUSA.org Established in every country; just like it was written. Every language and every skin color. Only in Mt. Zion God Bless!!!

      1. Real Nigga Rep says:

Yeah you are ryt it is spiritual, i luv the fact that even his buddy Mr Lamar always has a reference to God in almost every verse, he even dressed like Jesus on Halloween to show wat dey abt. That’s y cole say me n kendrick coz dey knw the truth.

  10. Hussle says:

Cole the greatest, Cole the realest

  11. M.A.T. says:

There’s a reason why McDonalds doesn’t pay much, because you shouldn’t want to stay there when you grow up. I’m sorry, I don’t think people flipping burgers should be making as much money as a teacher. That job is for kids in high school. It’s not a career. You want to make more money, leave McDonalds and start your own restaurant where high school kids can work at. I get that he wants to even the playing field or try to make things more fair, but what class you’re in isn’t set in stone with Capitalism. You can climb the ladder and he’s a perfect example of that. He has more now than what he did because he made something of himself. And expecting everyone to do the right thing is Utopia. That’s ignoring human nature. Not everyone is going to be a good worker. And a bad worker shouldn’t make the same amount of money or more as someone who works hard. And if you’re in a situation where you do work hard for nothing, I can’t feel bad that you’re not smart enough to leave that job and figure out a way to make more money by doing less. With Capitalism you can make something of yourself. Before people were born into a class. You were either born a peasant or a noble. That’s not the case anymore. If you don’t like your situation then you can do something about it and the only person holding you back is yourself.

    1. Kingly_Caracter says:

      Agreed. Well said.

    2. Michael Ib bett says:

Yeah that shit is crazy what they want. I know substitute teachers that get 80 bucks to go in for the day

    3. Supa_Doopa_Ghost1 says:

If that were the truth, everyone in the world with a dream would be rich.

      1. M.A.T. says:

haha What? No, anyone can have a good idea. The question is whether or not you can make that dream into a reality. Some of the world’s greatest talents are unknown. Why? Because at some point they stopped doing it. Talent can only get you so far. You have to have a great work ethnic as well. I’m not saying it’s easy, but I am saying it’s possible. There are plenty of people who came from the nothing that are a testament to that idea.

        1. Supa_Doopa_Ghost1 says:

You can have talent and all the work ethic in the world, but it still comes up to chance. That “You can achieve anything you want if you make it happen” spill is a BS proverbial carrot dangled in front of you by the top level to keep you thinking you can someday reach where they are by working harder for them. It still involves a HUGE amount of luck to succeed in anything. There are lots of ppl who made it from nothing. But there is an EXPONENTIALLY greater amount of people who died trying.

          1. M.A.T. says:

Well you’re definitely not going to achieve shit waiting on somebody else to do it for you. At least that chance exists. You’re acting like it doesn’t and it’s hopeless to even try. Which to me is bullshit.

          2. Supa_Doopa_Ghost1 says:

I never said anything about waiting on anyone. And I also acknowledged that it is possible to rise from the most severe states of poverty an make something of yourself. But I am also saying, as Cole said in the interview, the way the system is set up, it’s HIGHLY unlikely. You can continue to drink that “american dream” kool-aid if you like, I myself am more realistic about the state of our society. Is it a pessimistic view? Yes, it absolutely is. But the truth is not pretty and very uncomfortable. And therefore the fact remains that millions of people in this country will die in poverty. Not because they didn’t try or work hard enough. Not because they accepted hand-outs from the government and were lazy. Not because they didnt try to reach outside of their environment in order to extend beyond that, but because everyone wont and cannot succeed when 1% of the population holds 99% of the wealth. That’s a fact.

          3. M.A.T. says:

I see what you mean, we can agree to disagree. As for me, I simply don’t think it’s productive to have a victim mentality. That’s all.

          4. Supa_Doopa_Ghost1 says:

It’s not a victim mentality, as so much as acknowledging the truth instead of going along blindly like it doesn’t exist. Some people choose to ignore it, but eventually we all must come to grips with it. Most of the time it’s just too late to do anything about it. Then the mid-life crisis begins…lol

          5. M.A.T. says:

Whelp if that happens, I won’t be blaming anybody else for my short comings. Thanks for the interesting debate.

  12. MJeezy says:

This was one of THE realest interviews that I’ve seen in a while man! Props to J.Cole for keepin’ it 100.

  13. IMMORTAL says:

Cole is incredible and this is much needed! I wonder why Lupe’s name never gets mentioned in this conversation? He’s always rapped/talked about change and the issues.

    1. M.A.T. says:

Because he comes off as way too preachy and beats the listener over the head with a hammer.

      1. Kingly_Caracter says:

I kinda get what your saying. But at the same time…thats what we call a “lane”. Almost any artist I can think of hits you over the head with a particular message of some kind. Let’s be real…unless you play a J.Cole song or the like, You won’t be bombarded by “preachy” messages any other way than if you seek it out. We get bombarded with the opposite of preachy…and if your are comfortable with the large amount of that hood/party message more power to you. But back to your point…I think he’s filling a very empty gap. Consciousness and awareness. I value that more because its about stuff that actually matters after the party ends. Real life…Bless.

        1. M.A.T. says:

Look this is coming from someone who was a huge Lupe fan when Food & Liquor came out. He used to be subtle with it. He would tell a story and let the listener come to their own conclusion. Nowadays he’s just in your face with his ideas and sometimes I don’t agree with him so he’s putting me in a hard place. I just feel like he’s so focused on the message that it’s not even good music anymore. Now I’m just listening to a rant. Like he’ll put so much emphasis on the subject of the song that he forgets to even make it a good song.

          1. Kingly_Caracter says:

I feel your points tho. Personally, I prefer and encourage placing positive messages in as subtle as possible for one reason. It’s usually the persons that need it most need it to be delivered that way. Trojan horse. But just like everything else there should be balance. Some topics can be less blatant and but some should smack the masses like a pimp back hand. Simply because they need immediate attention.

Lastly I think he approached this album this way because of the tension recently…According to him his head was in a sensitive place…And we all know when you feel sensitive lashing out happens.

          2. Michael Ib bett says:

He may be beating the listener over the head, but u just hit the nail on the head with that comment. That’s exactly why I don’t like him

  14. jussayin says:

This dude just spoke truth about love and yall in the comment section….tearing each other down….we r hopeless as a society…the upvotes ain’t worth it if you’re creating animosity towards each other…stop and think…please

  15. ZoomZoomDad-Otis says:

Best non 50 cent interview i’ve seen in a longtime J. Cole. Very humble young man.

  16. yorapper says:

Black kids are rapping into shitty mics over FL beats. They don’t wanna learn the fucking trumpet!

  17. yorapper says:

If you follow youtube rappers, you’ll know the ones that actually have small fan bases are these white rappers like Hoodie Allen and all those corny kinda guys. I think those guys benefit from being white because the majority of America can relate. But I think white rappers who actually come with good songs like Eminem and Macklemore are able to transcend their whiteness, sure they’re still selling to their white fans but if your a black person that doesn’t have you head up your ass you can appreciate it.

  18. el jim chapo guzman says:

I can’t wait for the numbers to come back.

  19. ATL says:

J Cole a real dude.. I’m starting to like him more and more. Cool album just stop trying to produce your whole joint, IMO it’s the only thing really holding you back. Everything else is on point when it comes to flow, subject matter and substance.

  20. jack robinson says:

One of the best interviews I’ve watched from the Power brand. What made sense the most to me was the Jazz analogy.

  21. yorapper says:

He’s got the right mindset and knowledge just doesn’t know how to make songs that will have an impact. He can’t make a Bob Marley “One Love”. Heck he can’t make a Macklemore “Same Love”. That Ferguson song will be forgotten by next week.

  22. yorapper says:

“What was happening before us?” Guy acts like Lupe, Talib, Macklemore, KRS, Public Enemy, and a bunch of other conscious rappers never existed.

    1. AKB says:

Public Enemy & KRS were in the 80’s and 90’s after that there was a gap. Then Lupe and Talib came but Talib rose to surface with Just To Get By but didn’t have serious MAINSTREAM success. Lupe was on the right track but his music went left after The Cool. On a MAINSTREAM level where EVERYBODY can hear there’s been a gap from since Lupe and Talib’s days. Wale, Cole, Kendrick, K.R.I.T. and others leading the way now tho

  23. yorapper says:

“Your depressing me again” – Angie Martinez

  24. IntlThink says:

This is why i’m fucking with Jcole ….The only answer is Love … im sorry but those that are grown …. older …. been through it know … the ONLY answer is love and that can literally change everything. I sound super corny but I’m telling you that solution all you young girls/boys are looking for is right in front off you .

  25. Realistically says:

Love this interview. Cole is the closest thing to Pac that we have in this decade.

Him and Kendrick are leading the pack in regards to this new wave of consciousness. Lecrae is leading the way as well … I just think he loses a lot of people with the strict Christian message.

So at the end of the day, we can either be led by Money or Love – we can’t follow both. I just hope more of us learn to choose the latter.

  26. blackbeltbreeze says:

    This interview important

  27. Belize says:

So glad he didn’t do breakfast club

  28. Belize says:

And to answer your question Jermaine: there’s a lot of OG doing conscious music..its just the system don’t pump anymore cuz they fan base ain’t 14-18 anymore. Styles P for one but only his hard ish gets promo..Common of course and Jayz always..always makes 1-2 deep songs on his project.. FUTW being one I still hear to this day. Wish he made it a single but they wasn’t ready

  29. Gambino says:

    Cole world!!!

  30. MazeTheKid says:

This is the reason i hate when people say there is enough rappers. Its not the bad are 91precent of the game and out of the 9 percent 5percent are getting the message out and the other 4 can’t gain traction. We haven’t got great artist from every state yet,we need more MC’S to uphold the art form and be that light that shines in the darkness.Im trying to do it im 24 and i”m gonna keep making my music until its heard. soundcloud/mazethekid

  31. SHADY STAN! says:

This kid just lost a lot of fans whether you cats believe it or not.The fact that he can sit there and speak on white rappers when he himself is 1/2 white.Hes a fucking hypocrite. His mother is GERMAN!White!!!!GTFOH with this cornball…
