  4. blackbeltbreeze says:

ticket on comm going up seven levels…he might cop the grammy, now…hard to imagine a better campaign for the grammy voters than wining a golden globe, receiving that award from prince, delivering a strong performance in a critically aclaimed award winning movie produced by oprah and brad pitt about one of this country’s most pivotal historic events and leaders, having a music career over two decades strong, having close ties to questlove who has tripled his already staggering amount of musician contacts since assuming his position with jimmy fallon, and realeasing a damn good concept album exploring contemporary life in youth murder filled Chicago during the same year as the emergence of #blacklivesmatter.

if that doesn’t draw enough votes to beat iggy…and people sit there in the audience and clap with no wutang is for children moment at the bare minimum, then hiphop is dead.

not dead if she wins. dead if all those rappers sit up there in that venue and clap and smile for that shit. that’s like someone spitting in kool herc and bun b’s face and no one saying anything. if that happens, it’s a wrap.

    1. marty mcfly says:

I doubt there will be many rappers at the Grammys. There never is. Hip Hop aint dead or alive based on what the Grammy judges and voters think.

      1. blackbeltbreeze says:

Of course you’re right on both points. I was being poetic with my words. But that’s also not the point I made.

Hiphop music with no subversive, confrontational, reality based, uncomfortable element is not hiphop culture. So if people who claim that culture sit in the audience and clap for Iggy if she wins that award, if they say nothing, do nothing, but smile and grin, and say congratulations, then in that moment the rules and ethics of corporate culture have trumped hiphop culture.

People can frown. Stage a walkout. Interrupt the show. Hold up cards. They can react in many nonviolent ways to highlight problems in a system that values that album over all those other albums as a representation of the best in the genre. They don’t have to accept that passively. The Grammy voters can’t claim to be ignorant of common because look at all the press he is getting during their voting season and how long he has been in the game.

        1. marty mcfly says:

To address your first point. You said whats NOT Hip Hop but if we take some records that don’t contain what you say is Hip Hop? We still can’t say its not Hip Hop. If Ludacris makes a club record, we can’t just say its not Hip Hop because its not saying much. Its still Hip Hop. As for the Grammys? Most Hip Hop artists show you how they feel because they don’t even show up in the first place.

          1. blackbeltbreeze says:

I think you misreading my point still. I never once said Iggy or her album are not hiphop. I don’t go down that road. Hiphop is a wide genre with many variations and styles. But at the essence all products created under the name hiphop are not of equal quality. Critics, fans, and various organizations play the often controversial role of determining what is of higher and lower quality. I am not saying that Iggy made a nonhiphop album. I am saying that Iggy made a hiphop album that is inferior to numerous other hiphop albums that were released over the past year, particular those also nominated for that best hiphop album award. This is not a new phenomenon for the Grammys. Very few albums considered classic in hiphop culture received grammy best album awards. However, when people explain the reason for these occurrences, they say that it is usually because the people who are the Grammy voters vote for each category based on whatever their knowledge base is at the time. To be Grammy voter I think you have to be a previous Grammy recipient and 90% of those folks come from genres other than hiphop, so if they bother to vote in that category they are most often not wrestling with their decision and reviewing all of the work of the various artists. They are busy music professionals and probably don’t have time to do that type of homework. So when they are deciding about genres they know little about, they simply pick the names they know the best. That’s why it’s important for artists who covet those awards to make sure they perform at certain events, shake certain hands, and get certain types of press. Essentially they have to campaign publicly and/or privately.

When you look at the last 3 to 6 months of Common’s career, how can anyone make an argument that he has not made himself visible enough to at least ensure that a much larger segment of the population knows who he is? And he didn’t raise his profile with Twitter beef and outrageous scandals. He raised it with credible work in other fields of entertainment. Personally I like the Schoolboy Q album better than either Iggy or Common’s album. But Q is not at the same place in his career as far as name recognition and overall achievements as Common. This is different from last years situation with Macklemore because Macklemore had several of that years biggest records, made a record that about same sex marriage that drew a lot of attention from mainstream media, and he made an album that many critics and fans considered to be authentic and interesting. The only thing Iggy has in common with Macklemore is that she had some years biggest records. Critics have almost universally bashed that album. There was no song that spoke on a controversial political issue that became symbolic of an entire spectrum of political beliefs. She made a low quality hiphop album with lots of pop appeal. Which has been happening since the 1980s. But Grammy voters do not have the excuses that they used to have for ignorancof the genres. They have every reason to take this genre seriously and not just scratch off a name because they happen to recognize it. If they don’t then people should check them. That’s what hiphop is as a culture. I don’t mean as a genre of music. I mean as a culture. It’s not r&b culture or classical music or jazz culture to respond to disrespect in that manner. But that is an element of hiphop culture that i hope remains.

          2. marty mcfly says:

As for Iggy’s album? I dont know what it is because I never heard it and I doubt I ever will take the time to listen. Whether she’s considered Hip Hop or not really doesn’t make a difference to me because I don’t wanna hear her music period. Here’s why Im not tripping off the Grammys? Because their not judging music the same way I am. For one example you’ll notice how alot of rappers that won Grammys also released albums that are multi platinum… Thats one factor that shows a pattern of how they vote and what they based it on. I hear what your saying but is Common a blonde white girl that can rap? No so therefore Iggy wins. They don’t care how good Common can rap or what the purpose of his music is or what he represents. They see Iggy and see themselves, for the most part. A white person that has used black culture to attain success which is something most of the white artists in the room that night can relate to because thats how they got on.

          3. blackbeltbreeze says:

hmmm…i hear you. “they see iggy and see themselves.” that’s a cold truth about the world you just said. i think that’s very true for many people who vote. i do think that many white members of the Recording Academy do not view music or the world that way though. But there are some, and perhaps many, who currently have that type of thinking. that’s a good point.

i think i hear you saying that you think even if the members of the Recording Academy know both Common and Iggy equally well, Iggy will still win, even if they think her album is worse, simply because there are more white people on the Recording Academy than nonwhite. A shorter way of saying this is that race trumps everything, at least as far as the way grammy awards are distributed. But perhaps throughout the world.

You know. I struggle with this idea. On the one hand, I see so much evidence that it is true. On the other hand, I see evidence that it is not true. For example, Esperanza Spading won best new artist the year that Justin Bieber was nominated for the best new artist award. She is a jazz bass player and composer who is one of those musical geniuses who begins understanding music theory at about 5 or 6 years old. She’s biracial black and wears a huge afro. Plays very distinctly african and latin styles of music. She attended either juliard or a school like that. she was a professor at a music college by the time she was 18 and began touring when she was about 16. So she had alot of stripes on her belt. She had released an amazing album that year, and had some singles do really well on several charts which today is very hard for jazz to do. And she won that award. To me and to people who take jazz seriously, it was great that this black young woman who is both a musical genius and extremely hardworking and creative won. She has since collaborated with so many hiphop artists and is always refreshing. But when she won, so many people from the hiphop side on the industry were tweeting “what the fuck is an esperanza spalding?” “They robbed my homie Bieber” and it just made me feel sad to so many rich young black people be so ignorant and coonish.

So on one hand, I see what you mean when i look at the world as a whole. I see 2000 Baga people die last Thursday in Nigeria and the Nigerian government, mainstream global media, and most social media are quiet about it. I see years and years of youth dying in Chicago and New Orleans at levels that outpace warzones around the world, and politicians and mainstream media ignore it. On the other hand, I see evidence that race does not trump everything and that many or at least some white people in general, and white musicians specifically, are willing to make some decisions for reasons other than racial bias.

also…i was wrong earlier about how i said the grammy voting process works. I saw this on hiphopdx in an article MC Lyte wrote about how grammy winners are chosen. it’s worth a read.

How To Vote For The GRAMMYs

Where and how can people register?

To apply for membership you can either download the application or call The Academy’s member hotline: 866.794.339

            Who’s eligible?

To be a voting member, you have to be a music artist with a minimum of 6 commercially released tracks (12 if it’s online). But there are 3 levels of membership: Voting, Associate, and Studentand each has its own level of criteria.

            Visit https://www.grammypro(dot)com/join for more information.

            What happens after you vote?

What a lot of people don’t realize is that the ballots actually go to a third party accounting firm, Deloitte & Touche, not The Recording Academy. We do this to help ensure the integrity of the process. It’s simple addition from there: no one’s vote is weighted, every vote counts as one, and nothing gets overridden. Once the firm has tabulated the votes, they send us the final list of winners and that’s it.

          4. marty mcfly says:

What I’m saying is based on observations I have seen over the years when it comes to the Grammys and do Hip Hop artists that have not put out platinum albums that same year usually when Grammys? No and do the Grammys overall seem to show Hip Hop the respect it deserves simply based on music? No. I do not expect them to pick Common over Iggy simply because its the Grammys, its not an award show that really respects Hip Hop culture all that much.

  5. Stanfield says:

Great song & video. I know MOST black folks rather hear that nursery struggle rap over a down south best.

    1. 1KillMovez1 says:

I’m black I like the lyrical shit and the ignant shit! There’s needs to be a variety I’m young I can’t turn up to this in the club doesn’t mean I don’t like it tho.

    2. Selorm Amuzu says:

That’s the most self-righteous thing to say lol

    3. marty mcfly says:

MOST black folks are buying other forms of music. R&B, Pop, Gospel and then Hip Hop and you can’t assume what most black people would rather listen to by judging what music gets played in a club or on radio. When people play music on their own personal time, thats what they would rather listen to.

      1. Stanfield says:

But here you are assuming what most black people are buying. LMAOOOO at you all upset sending me two emotional comments.

        1. marty mcfly says:

You can call it assuming but I have seen what black people buy by working in a record store and also being black myself and knowing for facts that you can’t assume what most black folks would rather listen to especially when a huge portion of black people aint even listening to Hip Hop in general and another larger portion are buying whatever is popular so its what they listen to because its popular at the time but on their personal time they not even playing the current rap shit.

          1. Stanfield says:

So you working in one record store in one city tells you what “MOST” bleck people are buying right?? LOL. You obviously don’t read the statistics of who purchase music based of race.

          2. marty mcfly says:

Not just working at a record store but also looking at the stats for one of the largest markets in music period which is what people are buying in all the record stores in all of northern California. You said MOST black people would RATHER listen to nursery struggle rap over a down south beat? Well not only will the stats show thats wrong but also common sense. Just looking at Hip Hop in general, if you actually asked a black person what they would RATHER listen to? I doubt its nursery struggle rap and now once you factor in how many R&B, Pop, Gospel and Hip Hop artists that don’t “nursery struggle rap over down south beats”… Get listened to by black people? Then what MOST black people would RATHER listen to is not what your suggesting. Now as far as what the mainstream industry side of things chooses to play? MOST black people don’t get to pick what’s being played so when radio plays Migos 20 times a day, I doubt that most black people came together and chose that record. There is a demographic for wack Hip Hop and even with black people, the MOST of them aint even listening to that in the first place. Especially if what they would RATHER listen to is an option.

          3. marty mcfly says:

Also if black people buy a wack Hip Hop record one week, is it because thats what they would RATHER listen to? Or is it because its the new such and such that just came out and its popular at the time? On the weekends when Gospel albums fly off the shelf, that does more to demonstrate what alot of black people would RATHER listen to then whatever new rap album on Tuesday does when it comes out and people but it. Especially when you still got black people buying Hip Hop albums that are actually dope as well.

    4. marty mcfly says:

On top of that, Common is black with a song from a movie about black folks… So you can’t assume what MOST black folks would rather listen to based on observations you make about Hip Hop.

  6. el jim chapo guzman says:

everyone knows that Malcolm X changed his views about white after he came back from his pilgrimage to Mecca. Trying to make a non-racist man look racist because he is a symbol of black freedom, is pretty racist.

    1. marty mcfly says:

White racism is a fact, especially in Malcolm’s time. He had different views after he came back from Mecca but he still felt the same way about the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF RACISTS WHITE PEOPLE HERE IN AMERICA. There has NEVER been any time period in history where black people established racism against whites to a degree such as whites did to black people. Malcolm wasn’t making non racist men look racist back then. The large majority of whites back then would openly say there were racist so the racism in general was out in the open. Only difference is today the larger majority of white people deny and hide their racism but its still there.

      1. el jim chapo guzman says:

I assume by your statement that yo have no idea what Malcolm X was about, or what he wrote.

        1. marty mcfly says:

Yes he was about telling the white man to his face exactly what he is, a devil and even when he returned from his trip to Mecca he still was against racist whites.

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

I have a dream that one day black people find guts to call a black criminal who
tweets hateful words towards white people before killing a white Australian student, a RACIST.

          2. marty mcfly says:

Ok you wanna call out one murder? I can call out hundreds of millions of black people killed by racist whites that whites have never acknowledged as being racist. The whole 400 years of slavery, The Jim Crow era, KKK and lynch mob era, established and systematic racism that had been used as a tool of oppression that a billion white have practiced and upheld over for centuries, white people don’t have the guts to say is racist.

          3. el jim chapo guzman says:

i’m done you believe what you wanna believe.

          4. marty mcfly says:

Its not a “belief” its historical FACT.

          5. el jim chapo guzman says:

Happy Birthday Dr king Marty’s Shining Black Prince

          6. marty mcfly says:

Thanks especially since you represent everything he was against.

          7. el jim chapo guzman says:

You welcome marty although I reminded you of his birthday.

      2. el jim chapo guzman says:

Malcolm X actually racanted his anti-white beliefs before his death. In the end, he went against the nation of islam and that is how he should be remembered

        1. marty mcfly says:

That don’t mean he joined the KKK and started lynching black people. He toned his beliefs down but he was still against racist whites.

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

let give blacks special treatment because of their skin color how about that marty.

          2. marty mcfly says:

How bout whites just stop being racist and leave black people alone? You gave whites hundreds of years a special treatment and it was off the murder and oppression of our people.

          3. el jim chapo guzman says:

Marty I’m not the racist one you are. I play both side of the fence.

          4. marty mcfly says:

You are racist and what also makes you a coward is you won’t stand behind your racism like many others like you won’t. You said blacks are by nature violent and you’ve said in the past that most blacks are criminal and that was just a couple outta literally a hundred different racial comments you have made…. You’ve made racila comments in sections where race wasn’t even remotely connected to the subject at hand. It would be impossible for you not to be racist at this point and again what’s equally shameful is your also a coward.

          5. el jim chapo guzman says:

Hmmm…. they talk about the racists in business suits. How ’bout the racists in the baggie pants and the hoodies

          6. marty mcfly says:

The same reason why Jews don’t like Germans, Native Americans don’t like whites and why most Asians also don’t like whites is the same reasons why blacks “should” also not like white people. Especially since our holocaust and oppression was much worse. The fact that most black people don’t hate white people is a sign of humanity that no other race understands. Even alot of whites think black people should hate them.

          7. el jim chapo guzman says:

i’m done arguing with you you just mad cause The truth hurts, eh?

          8. marty mcfly says:

NOTHING you said was the truth. EVERYTHING I said as and thats what makes you mad.

          9. el jim chapo guzman says:

            Stfu with your false statements.

          10. marty mcfly says:

All true and back up with facts. Racism in america is 99.9% the results of hatred from white people for centuries. Only a lost dumbass would suggest otherwise.

          11. el jim chapo guzman says:

Oops, gotta run! Been a pleasure talking with someone sane on these boards.Have a good night Marty.

    2. marty mcfly says:

White people don’t like black people simply because of skin color and because its no longer legal to enslave, brutalize, rape, and kill us anymore… Black people don’t like white people because after all that shit you’ve have done to every black and brown people around the world it would not make sense to like white people at this point. Historically whites are literally the embodiment of the devil on earth based upon their actions not their skin color.

      1. el jim chapo guzman says:

marty Hate exist between and within race. A person who is a racist will never have an inner peace……..

        1. marty mcfly says:

The hate is from white people. Again NEVER in american history have blacks ever established or upheld any racism as a collective period. Whites did that for centuries.

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

Add your president to that racial problems

          2. marty mcfly says:

He’s your president too and thats why he receives more racial hatred then any president in history. Obama himself is not a racist and anybody with common sense knows this. Smh

          3. el jim chapo guzman says:

Lol Obama is not racist lol when Obama leave office you should just leave with him marty. You got Obama dick shoved down your throat so deep it’s ridiculous.

          4. marty mcfly says:

Yeah Obama is not racist because you can not name 1 racist statement he’s made. On top of that who is he racists against? White people? His mother is white idiot. The KKK must have run a train on your retarded mother which produced you because your hatred for black people has to be at a record high but thats only cause your you aint shit.

          5. el jim chapo guzman says:

All this post tells me is that you’re a racist human.

  7. el jim chapo guzman says:

Glory your pipe dreaming, blacks are violent by nature, statistics are there to prove it, the majority of blacks are Muslims and see what that got your in NY, in professional boxing they have Mike Tyson, a Muslim who bit of the ear of another boxer…then beat up his wife, a rapper involved with gangs so got shot in Las Vegas, the list goes on and on..”

    1. marty mcfly says:

Actually the statistics are calculated by white people who are the most violent race of people in the history of mankind. They post all the murders committed by black men but don’t tell you the other 99.9% of black men have never killed anybody. The majority of blacks are not Muslim, the overwhelming majority of black people are Christian and again this is why you need to be quiet because you don’t know what your talking about.

      1. el jim chapo guzman says:

I would argue the hate is equal between the two.

        1. marty mcfly says:

There is centuries of racism coming from white people as a collective so the fact you think there is an equal amount makes you an idiot.

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

MLK rolls in his grave every time he hears the whine of people who do not really know what true suffering and racism is

          2. marty mcfly says:

Somebody like you. You would’ve been the type calling his house threatening his wife and kids because thats what side you identify with as a racists yourself and thats clear based upon several of your comments.

          3. el jim chapo guzman says:

            ‘Racism Without Racists’ ???
intellectual dishonesty at it’s best marty.

          4. marty mcfly says:

Thats what you’ve been doing this whole time. Your claiming that the racism in america is coming from blacks? Even white people would tell you that intellectually dishonest. Racism is a white tradition that whites even take pride in. They are the masters of racism and there is no other race on the planet earth with more racial hatred in their hearts then white people.

          5. el jim chapo guzman says:

Let me rephrase……there no other race on the planet earth with more racial hatred in their hearts then blacks in America.

          6. marty mcfly says:

Thats about as dumb a comment as when you bring up one murder to show how racist black people are vs me bringing up 400 years of murder committed by white people which was fueled by racial hatred. Literally every non white race on the planet considered whites devils because no one has ever witnessed a more wicked race of people in the history of mankind. White people have literally taken whole races and species off the planet. The murders committed by white people historically is unknown because its so high its not even recordable accurately.

          7. el jim chapo guzman says:

Your comments was the dumbest, you said there is no other race on the planet earth with more racial hatred in their hearts then white people. What kinda of racist comments is that Marty. I’m tired of arguing with a hard headed monkey brain.

          8. marty mcfly says:

No other race has ever even come close to murdering half a billion people. Whites have killed OVER half a billion people (Blacks, Native americans, and Japanese) largely due to racism in less then a millennium. That kinda violence is unparalleled by any other race at any time known to mankind.

        2. marty mcfly says:

When black people slaughter half a billion whites over the course of centuries of enslavement, rape, torture, brutality etc… Then it’ll be equal.

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

marty Stop making everything about blacks and how they suffer..

          2. marty mcfly says:

How is me saying whats simply historic truth making everything about blacks suffering? Its the truth, I didnt just create history. You said the racism is equal? Only somebody who doesn’t even consider that hundreds of millions of black people were killed would even suggest that.

          3. el jim chapo guzman says:

Blacks need to look within themselves with an open mind. If so, they would learn how horribly racist THEY are. Never saw such racism in my life as I have with this Ferguson problem, and it is coming from the blacks. Not whites

          4. marty mcfly says:

No, the racism comes from whites. Again comparing blacks to whites in the realm of racism would be like comparing a raindrop of racism from blacks to all the oceans on earth combined to make up the racism coming from whites. White racism is FACTS and there is centuries of evidence backing that up.

          5. el jim chapo guzman says:

Marty’ I believe Malcolm X was killed by 2 black men…

          6. marty mcfly says:

and an unknown number of black slaves were killed by white people because its in the millions.

      2. el jim chapo guzman says:

12 % of the population is black ! But they are 40 % of them in prison population ! That tells me they don’t adapt well to a civilized society !

        1. marty mcfly says:

And 80% of law enforcement focuses on black people so the fact so many are in prison makes sense. If that same level of focus was put on white people especially in the sense of drug abuse then you would see a bunch of white people in jail because they buy and consume more drugs then black people do but black people spend the most time in prison over drug related crimes. Not to mention the CIA openly admits to allowing and participating in black neighborhoods to be flooded with drugs coming in from drug cartels they sponsored and funded in the 80s. Also these areas were built by whites a generation earlier and since blacks were not allowed to live or work in the same areas as whites then black people moved to these areas of the city because economically thats what made sense at the time. Years later white people working for the top agencies on government purposes help flood black neighborhoods with drugs and guns and then later used that as an excuse for funding more police and prisons and put the rest of the hundreds of millions if not billions in their pockets.

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

Congratulation….you just won the award for the dumbest RANT of the century,,Check your facts marty!

          2. marty mcfly says:

Those are the facts and you can’t deny them just like the CIA couldn’t. You can only resort to saying somethings dumb cause you have no counter for it. Were black people making cocaine in the streets of america by the tons? Of course not so how did it get here and why was so much of it in black communities? It was purposely placed there by the united states government and when the information came out during the Clinton administration they couldn’t deny it was true so they sweep it under the rug. FACTS

        2. marty mcfly says:

Most white people are killed by other white people, most drugs used by white people are sold to them by other white people… The type of shit you’ll never hear on the news but after centuries of living off the wealth that black slaves had to work for and die for there are numerous reasons why your average white person doesn’t have to commit crime to survive… You talk about civilized society? That whole society rests on the backs of slaves that were made to work for free and then killed for centuries by this devil which is the white man, women and child. The black gangs and criminals that have been running around from a few generations now are just a drop of water in an ocean of white people that have practiced evil like devils for centuries.

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

Amazing how all of these stories are of blacks being the victims of racism. Here’s a newsflash for you, blacks are guilty of being racist too

          2. marty mcfly says:

Yeah like maybe a few isolated people vs centuries of collective racism from whites in every area of human relation.

          3. el jim chapo guzman says:

A black man invented air conditioning. No relevance to the article at all, LOL, but still! I love AC, don’t you marty? hahaha!

          4. marty mcfly says:

Again, you duck and make light of the point made cause there is NOTHING you can say to counter it or deny its validity.

    2. FLASH KID says:

The majority of Blacks are actually Christians not muslims. You need to double check your stats.

      1. el jim chapo guzman says:

You don’t know nothing flash kid I suggest you go check your facts.

        1. marty mcfly says:

Those are facts idiot. A very very very small amount of black people are Muslim. The other high 90s percent is Christian. You can’t go in a black neighborhood without seeing multiple Christian churches. FACTS

          1. el jim chapo guzman says:

I already did marty America has more Muslim than Christian. Half of the Muslim is from prison by the way.

          2. marty mcfly says:

That comment is so ridiculously stupid it doesn’t even make sense. There is a thousand black Christians for every 1 black Muslim is america stupidass.

          3. el jim chapo guzman says:

America is a less Christian nation than it was 20 years ago. and Christianity is losing out to other religions like Muslims.

          4. marty mcfly says:

Thats is ridiculously stupid. There are a few hundred million Christians in the United States. FOH

          5. el jim chapo guzman says:

Go home chicken little you have no knowledge, sorry you can’t school me marty.

          6. marty mcfly says:

You don’t even have basic common sense. You keep your responses short and simple because you know once you say anything specific you’ll sound stupid. You talking about Christians losing out to Muslims in america? Kill yourself for that level of stupidity.
