That’s still just a post on a blog. it has never felt to me like Hov pushes Cole or any roc nation artists in the way that Wayne pushes nicki and drake or top dawg pushes Kendrick, Rozay pushes meek and them. We could also say that Kanye underpromotes most good music artists but Kanye has been upfront about good music being more a collective at this point than a traditional label imprint. Every interview I have seen the artist and athletes have said anytime they need anything from roc nation its a go. I dont care what it looks like I want to see action, Jay elec has said he is happy that Jay has been patient with him making his album! Plus you said you didnt know about the website life and times so do you go to roc nation’s wedsite. Because every time an artist or athlete has something going on they post it on there and IG and,twitter what more should they be doing!

There are only ten artist signed to roc nation on the label side jay z jay e j cole and Dj mustard are the only hip hop artist. The rest do pop music like Rita Ora willow smith Calvin Harris but I’m sure you have heard none of their songs. As I said before if you followed roc nation you would see them promote their artist. When big Sean released those 4 songs they promoted it fabs og project they promoted it plus he and mustard and Angie Martinez work the boxing event. Just because he not on the Internet or radio every week doesn’t mean they are not helping their artist. Why they sign if the company is not helping them?
You just checked the website tho. What I mean is, Hov is not presenting Roc Nation like some small quiet shit. Like Asthmatic Kitty records is an indie label. They have indie rock artists like Sufjan Stevens who is a genius who plays multiple instruments. They have artists but they promote them in a quiet indie way. They don’t do the loud hiphop or pop promotion. When Hov drops a project don’t you heard and see that project everywhere? So how come you can’t say the same about the other artists on the company? And Willow Smith is in her own category because she doesn’t really need a label in order for people to be familiar with her. Labels only serve one real purpose at this point, promotion, licensing and tours. They don’t develop and teach artists anymore. And artists can distribute their own shit digitally. So how does Roc Nation promote the artists signed to its labels. Angie and Fab and Mustard have management deals. Same with the sports stars. I’m talking about the artists in Cole and Calvin Harris position. The ones signed to the label. And I don’t think anyone can tell me one other song or artist that made some shit you have ever heard. I may not be a pop fan but I know who One Direction are. I know what Katy Perry looks like. I know what Taylor Swift sounds like. So if roc nation is supposedly into the pop market why they not popping over there either? I dont know why they sign these artists but I think it is more for their song writing and production skills than to actually promote them as individual talent. They use other artists but only really promote Hov as real centerpiece talent. Cole did all that shit on his own basically. Look how many features Wayne had drake on from day 1. Look how Tech N9ne has his artists getting feature after feature and books them on his tours. When you seen any roc nation artists open for Jay or on same stage as Jay?
So he hasn’t prompted Rita Ora he also has had every artist on roc nation in the made in America festival. And if these artist didn’t need a label why are they signed Bridget Kelly was on rock nation she left. So it’s not like he is holding any artist back they must like working for rock nation otherwise why would they not just leave. I Have heard Jay-Z in interview say if artist want the music to come out as soon as they sign rock nation is not the label for them he was in the work and develop a Fanbase and then put out the music why would you want someone to do all the work for you to get you her best not how it worksit’s about given artist the opportunity event making the best of it not the owner of a label doing all the work for the artist they sign on the best opportunity for them to do whatever they can with that opportunity not the other way around. Roc nation is a independent label also there music is distribute by Universal and Columbia so I don’t know if you trying to say they are a major label or something like that but they work as a independent label with distribution through Columbia and universal
No Ben I guess I just have always been shocked by how quietly Jay promotes the artists signed to roc nation the music label. Not roc nation the sports agency or roc nation the publishing company or roc nation the management agency. I agree with your point about artists needing to invest their own sweat and ownership into their careers and develop their own fan bases. But I think creative promotion is one way that labels help artists, whether indie or major labels. And when we look at the very creative and high profile ways Jay promoted himself (Samsung deal, Timberlake co-tour, Beyoncé co-tour, etc), I just don’t see the same sort of creative promotion for J Cole or any of the other artists. To his credit though he did do the joint surprise performances with Jay Elec at the Brooklyn Hip Hop festival last year and they do one-off singles once or twice a year. But Jay Elec and Willow are very non traditional artists. Cole is competing with lots of traditional artists and has done exceptionally well with little more than a Hov co-sign. Maybe Rocnation has helped him clear samples. They definitely gave him time to grow and space to develop as he saw fit. But I don’t see the promotion element for him or the other artists. I havent seen Cole get booked at tours or on shows that any of his peers have not also been booked at. Even Azalia Banks got Glassgow a few years ago and is at Coachella this year. Run the Jewels are indie and have done Letterman several times. So what is the Roc Nation connect really doing for him that he wouldn’t have had in other lanes? You could be right tho, maybe I just don’t check the right blogs. I also don’t check pop blogs but I can’t avoid certain pop artists due to the promotional strength behind them.
Okay let’s go artist by artists that are signed to roc nation J Cole before we had a album out he was on the blueprint three album and tour on some of the dates Jay-Z was on his first album not a second of course not as third and he did not do no promotion neither did J Cole do any promotion but he thanked him on the album for believing in his plan. Rita Ora has done so many festivals I can’t even count she’s done some in America and some over in Europe Australia but also She has only release one album over in Europe and had two number one singles over there they didnt promote mustards album but he signed so type of deal with Google play so he got money up front! All the rest on the label are new and have only released singles
But bruh Rita Ora might be cool with the position she playing then. Bridget Kelly obviously wasn’t. And Roc Nation can’t even begin to take credit for bringing DJ Mustard to the main stage because his grind as a producer did that. If anything him signing to them gives their label promotion because otherwise all they have is J Cole, Whip My Hair (which willow made pre-Roc Nation and none of the Pinkett-smith children need Hov), and a couple of Jay Elec loosies.
And back to those two examples. That’s exactly point. Hov gave Cole a look at a festival or two and on that awful awful “Mr Nice Watch” song but how many albums major promo runs has Hov made since then to promote JAY Z? I’m not knocking his hustle for him and his family. I just dont think he applies that same type of hunger to his artists. That singer Sia is from Australia. I know her name. I know Skyler Grey’s name because look at all the features Eminem and Dre have put them on. Look at all the artists Em brought to the game through Shady and at least tried to promote. He still working Yellawolf and finding ways to keep D12 alive as a name and brand. All I’m saying is Jay Z doesn’t do business in that way when it comes to his music label. He reminds me of Talib Kweli almost when Kweli had Blacksmith. He signed Strong Arm Steady and Jean Grae, then dropped two albums of his own without releasing a project from them or really promoting them. But in contrast look at Joey Badass and the number of ways he has promoted ProEra artists from
jump. I know its almost apples and oranges because Joey and those artists are friends. But I’m just talking about promotion in general. Some people do a lot with a little and some people do very little with a lot. Hov does very little for his artists even though he does a lot for himself.
All I know if someone is a bad owner then nobody would want to work for them. When jays last ablum come out he did two interviews and the Samsung thing anywhere I think he try’s to run he’s company like a business and let people do their jobs he is the owner.
