Robin Thicke & Pharrell Lose “Blurred Lines” Suit

Outta My Mind.

Robin Thicke and Pharrell got to give up $7.3 million to the Gaye family. Earlier today, a Los Angeles jury ruled that their smash, “Blurred Lines”, infringed on Marvin Gaye’s hit, “Got to Give it Up”.

According to reports, the song sold over 6 million copies and generated $16,675,690. Following the verdict, Pharrell, Robin Thick, and T.I. issued a joint statement.

“While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward. “‘Blurred Lines’ was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin, and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else. We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter.”

    THEY HAD 3 OPTIONS :
1- PUT IT OUT WITHOUT CLEARANCE , MAKE 100% & PAY BACK FEES IF THEY LOSE THIS CASE (
2 ASK 4 SAMPLE CLEARANCE & EITHER GET REJECTED & CAN’T RELEASE IT (MAKE NOTHIN OFF THE SONG)
3 ASK 4 CLEARANCE & GET WHATEVER % THE ESTATE WANTS TO GIVE YOU ( GOT TO GIVE IT UP)
    PHARRELL IS FA REAL…

    1. mike h says:

Or, ridiculous as it sounds, release it as a mixtape song.

    2. yeah says:

There’s no sample to clear. The fact this case held so much water just doesn’t add up. If this is really a thing “suing because songs sound the same” there would be a never ending cycle of lawsuits, essssssspecialllllly in hip hop.
      (Without terms of sampling)
There’s 2 parts of copyright law
      1. Musical composition
      2. And the song itself (lyrics)

And it was not infringed either way, this was a dumbass jury

      1. Brian B.Dot™ Miller says:

this only happens when a song is successful and everyone is looking for a payday. I remember reading one time Martin tried to sue Sisqo for thong song cause he said “Livin La Vida Loca”!

        2. ZunguZunguBuZunguZeng says:

Rightfully so, Benson! If I make a website called RaPPradar, you’d sue me too. Pharrell jacked “Got to give it up”, and thought he’ll get away with it.

      2. bronxbillyunz says:

BEING THAT THIS IS LITERALLY THE BIGGEST SONG IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC AS FAR AS RADIO PLAY – IT ADDS UP TO MILLIONS. IF MARVIN GAYE WAS YA POPS , EVERYTIME U HEARD BLURRED LINES – U’D BE CALLIN UR LAWYER TRYIN TO GET SOME KINDA CHECK. MIXTAPE SONGS DONT NEED CLEARANCE, & MAJOR RELEASES DOESPECIALLY REMAKES OR REVISITS OF CLASSICS.. IF NOT U GETTIN SUED –

  5. t says:

    Justified.

The song sounds just like Marvin’s

  6. T says:

Funny part is if Marvin Gaye’s fake undercover gay Father didn’t kill his own son over a petty argument I think the legend Marvin Gaye would have been on stage dancing and performing that hit “Blurred Lines”. No disrecpect to the legend but his daughter was looking for a pay day and odvioulsy is broke. How can the song have earned 16mill but yet she originally sued them for 25mill and now won only
7mill then gave a funny ass interview fake crying to then news talking about shes finally released from Robin and Pharrell’s chains. You would have thought they had the old broad chained up in a basement LOL. If it was really about here Pops legacy she would have enforced that instead of suing for 25mill.Now back to this Marvin Gaye greatest hits mix on my iTunes..

    1. yorapper says:

Agree man. Song don’t sound like it, same feel maybe.

      1. T says:

Either way sampling is paying homage, the base lines and the old vintage funky feel is similar but it is two different songs…

        1. ZORINO says:

The groove is sped up on Blurred Lines and 15 seconds into both songs you can hear the same bassline used at pretty much the same spot.

  7. STRIK9 says:

Good. Quit bitin’. I always said Pharrell shit sounds like a bunch of other dudes shit.

    1. T says:

Explain? Who does Pharrell sound like

      1. ZORINO says:

At times he does sound like Curtis Mayfield.

    2. yeah says:

That’s could be the most opposed thing I’ve heard today

  8. TheIvy216 says:

“1 innovator, 1,000,000 imitators. They say play the odds” -Jesse Is Heavyweight

  9. ZORINO says:

Got to give it up. Pun intended. Shit, Blurred Lines is an obvious sample of Marvin Gaye ‘Got To Give It Up’, Pharrel and Robin Thicke should have cleared the sample and credited Marvin’s estate.

  10. smfh this is fucking ridiculous so just because the 2 songs sound similar they gonna lawsuit ? shit if thats so every nigga in hip hop needs to get a lawsuit especially today all these niggas sound alike fuck outta here gaye family take this L

  11. Gunplay's Coke Addiction says:

That song was terrible so I’m pretty hyped on this.

    1. Brian B.Dot™ Miller says:

Translation: It is undubidably a conspicous perceptible action on the part of the judicial system. We will a take a discernable concise incisive strategic course of action. So looka here shawty. Shit ain’t over yet, patna! *T.I. voice*

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  13. cannon says:

That 7mill. Gotta give it up.

  14. mikey the greek! fk u bama's! says:

  15. they gonna fight it till they pay it…but they could pay up and generate more money off the song

  16. Greenbergs says:

i dont know why but i feel like pharrell had almost planned this whole thing out from when he took the sample..

  17. Sina Mailer Daemon Djavadkhani says:

Sad day for Interpolation, Different Key + Different Progression = Different Song.

  18. MarvinGaye says:

SO PHARRELL IS GUILTY!!BUT WATCH HOW SUGE KNIGHT GOES FREE UNDER SOME FALSE PRETENCE OF ILLNESS INSANITY OR SPLIT PERSONALITY!!!!WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF WORLD DO WE LIVE IN DUDES???

  19. realroca says:

What’s wrong with this people? Damn, this is a great song sampled from Marvin Gaye, whats wrong with that ?

    1. ZunguZunguBuZunguZeng says:

Nothing is wrong with sampling per se. Before you sample, though, you need to get permission, then list the originator as the composer, and split revenue from the song.

  20. jetadore hommie says:

Word da mutha. I thought that was amber rose in the thumbnail

  21. DenCO says:

Pretty much the worst news for pop, and any song-sampling beat coming out. Shameful decision.

  22. ZORINO says:

Shit, even Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ hit ‘Uptown Funk’ credit Trinidad James for that ‘Don’t Believe Me, Just Watch’ chant.

You sample, you interpolate, you pay. Bottom line.
