Naw I live on a budget and have become accustomed to getting my music and videos free so why would I drop 10 for that? Seriously. I spend 10 a month on the Beats app now because I got it free and found it better than Spotify and Pandora so it makes sense and I wasn’t pushed into it by any artists or how it profits them. I make music and got my music on there and as a consumer I still don’t utilize the service or tell anyone to support me on there. They need to reevaluate their system and make it seem worthy for the average listener and not the die hard fan.

    1. Dark Matters says:

No one is forcing you into anything. Stop crying. You wouldn’t walk into a store and grab a coke for free. These videos cost more than cokes to make. Why should you be getting to watch them free? Just be appreciative of the times when you did get it for free. It is not a right. Stop feeling entitled to stuff you didn’t create yourself.

      1. Marko V says:

No the constant reminders of how the artist benefits and special attractions are strategically convincing you yet subtly forcing you to join Tidal. In comparison to others where they only made the service available and then the consumer chose. If I walked into all the corner stores and got coke for free why would I go to the store they just built around the corner that’s charging me. Not only would I show loyalty to the store I been going to I would talk so bad about the other store they might be forced to close from the hell I manage to raise. I should watch videos free because I ALWAYS watch videos free. Mtv BET and VH1 had free videos. Only The Box made us pay and once black videos got access on those mediums for mainstream visibility for free, then THE BOX went out of business. Im not disrespecting Tidal because like I said, my music is on there, however it doesn’t make sense from a consumer standpoint.

        1. Dark Matters says:

I don’t know if you know, but the purpose of business is to make money. Tidal has its business model – exclusives. If you want to watch their stuff, then you’ll have to pay for it. Simple. If you don’t think it’s valuable enough, then don’t join – simple. However, clearly you value their product. You just want it for free. Obviously, they’re doing something right.

Even if you can get “Coke” for free at one store, what happens when Coca Cola stops distributing to that store because they don’t want their product to be devalued? Or if another store is offering “coke” served in a glass. It’s their prerogative to make you pay for it. Some people appreciate their “Coke” in a glass or their “Coke” with Cherry flavor. If you don’t like it don’t join – simple. Stop whining as though they haven’t got the right to charge.

Why would they come into a market with established competitors and do the exact same thing the competitors are doing? That would be the fastest way to go out of business.

          1. Marko V says:

First off no one is whining, we’re having an intelligent discussion about a serious “matter” that seems to perplex even the owners of Tidal which is why thy go to such measures as to throw exclusive content to the nets and then take it away. All I’m saying is their business model needs to be reconfigured for the average listener and not the die hard fan with disposable income because Spotify is winning by offering a free version then getting ad dollars and getting paid off the die hard fans with immediate access to content without the ads. Tidal does none of that.

          2. Dark Matters says:

“that seems to perplex even the owners of Tidal which is why thy go to
such measures as to throw exclusive content to the nets and then take it
            away”

Having written what you just wrote up there, do you really consider yourself to be a person of decent intelligence? So, you’re suggesting that Tidal posts its exclusive content on file sharing sites and then files copyright claims with those very sites to have the videos taken down? Are you really a sensible person?

        2. Mr.Stealyogurl says:

Music videos have always been used to promote albums. They aren’t movies, you shouldn’t have to pay for them.

        1. Dark Matters says:

“You shouldn’t have to pay for them”
          Says who?
“Music videos have always been used to promote albums.”
To promote albums that people no longer feel they should have to buy when they can download them for free on the internet. How do you suggest that those who make the records and sell them make up for the lost revenue? The fact is you don’t care, you just want what you want. However, it costs money to make. Albums don’t grow on trees. Stop being a simpleton. Surely, you realize that life is a bit more complex than your wants.

          1. hands mahoney says:

Hold on, bro. Homie has a point. The mainstream listener, casual listeners, etc have always and will always only go for the free option. People listen to radio for free and watch youtube for free. The only way this Tidal thing is going to work is if they do a free option that is paid for by advertising dollars. That’s the only realistic way to do this. You give people the option to pay 10 bucks a month with no advertising and 20 bucks a month for HQ streaming, and boom… you covered all your bases. But to flood the market with “exclusive content” is not going to make your average listeners pony up. It’s just going to make more opportunity for offshore bootleggers and pirates and hackers. Young dudes love beating the system and that ain’t gonna change.

          2. Dark Matters says:

” The mainstream listener, casual listeners, etc have always and will always only go for the free option”

Oh really? And who was it that was buying all of those albums that were going platinum in one week? Those weren’t mainstream listeners? And if they weren’t mainstream listeners, what happened all of a sudden? Where have all those record buying non-mainstream listeners gone?

Yes, he has a point. He’s not in Tidal’s demographic and therefore he therefore he’s not entitled to Tidal’s product for free. Music is not a right. It is a privilege. A privilege that you pay for. People work extremely hard to create quality music. No one is entitled to it for free. If some companies and artists choose to give it away for free or at a significantly reduced price, that’s on them.

Youtube is a multiple billion dollar company with a business model built on ripping off artists’ content. That’s the sort of thing that got Megaupload taken down. Why youtube isn’t being penalized is beyond me. However, they’re taking money out of artists pockets and funneling it into theirs.

          3. hands mahoney says:

Yes and you have a point about the CD buyers. That is very true. But back then people still listened to the radio and watched MTV for free which was paid for by advertising. And that’s how most of us learned about new music and artists. I know music and videos cost a lot to make and it’s not people’s right to have it for free but in order for the whole system to work I believe people need to be able to hear it for free. When people bought CD’s they actually owned something, not just data streaming into their homes. Youtube, by the way, has a deal with itunes and amazon and google play where even if it’s a pirated song you’ll see a link to buy it on itunes. I believe that’s how they get away with it. I agree the system is not totally worked out yet but I don’t think forcing people to pay for streaming is going to be the answer. Especially with all the piracy available. Don’t you agree that Tidal should offer a free option with ads? Wouldn’t that solve all these issues and the artists could still get paid the same?

          4. Dark Matters says:

“I don’t think forcing people to pay for streaming is going to be the answer.”

No one is “forcing” anyone to do anything. They obviously offer very compelling product, which people like yourself feel you can’t live without. So you’re feeling “forced” to pay for it. The fact is if you feel you can’t live without someone’s product, and they’re charging for it, you should pay for it – simple.

“Don’t you agree that Tidal should offer a free option with ads?”
I feel Tidal should do whatever works for Tidal – simple. I’m not going to tell another person what they should be doing with what they created. I don’t know why as a consumer of music, people like yourself feel the artist should be the one losing out, when they’re the most important variable in the equation – not the consumer.

If artists aren’t making money at what they work very hard to do, they’ll have no incentive to make it and it will show in the product. And then typical entitled consumers will start moaning about how wack the product is. Consumers already don’t respect the product, because it’s being given to them for free.

And btw – consumers never got whole albums for free, before the internet era. They got 1 or 2 free videos and radio singles. That was it. And even back then many artists sold music videos, behind the scenes footage on VHS and DVD. Nowadays, a lot of that is made available for free. What makes you think that is something you’re entitled to. It’s not your right – simple. If artists make it available, then you should definitely appreciate it when you get it – not demand it as though it were your right.

          5. hands mahoney says:

I don’t think I’m entitled to anything, and I can definitely live without seeing a Nicki Minaj video. You’re putting a lot of words in my mouth. First they should provide free option in order to gain user base. None of the large corporations buy businesses providing exclusive content. They buy businesses with large user base. Jay-Z and the people behind him bought this business with the only purpose of selling for billions later. They spent a lot of money on this shitty business with low quality infrastructure. Jay-Z should stop rapping about his business, because when it fails he will be the joke, not the suits behind. Be calm and leave the work to the smart IT people who make billions of real work.

Jay-Z should stop rapping about his business, because when it fails he will be the joke, not the suits behind. Be calm and leave the work to the smart IT people who make billions of real work.
