Before the arrival of Troy Ave’s new mixtape, he speaks out publicly for the first time since his Irving Plaza shooting. He begins with a freestyle before speaking on his condition on Rikers Island and the passing of his friend, Ronald “Banga” McPhatter. Ave’s next court date is June 9.

I don’t know how to feel a about this. On one hand Troy is using his voice and influence to speak from behind bars about his situation without snitching and definitely with respectt to Banga and his family. On the other hand he’s using this as publicity for a mixtape. A free mixtape at that. Smh That kind of thing takes away from the validity and understanding he sought from his fans and others. At the end of the day I don’t wish jail or death on anybody.

Not really. I honestly think he could have done the freestyle and given his message to the people without it seeming like a mixtape promo run. Our climate of Hip Hop requires artist to take advantage of every oppurtunity when in all actuality it’s probably a better move for him to continue dropping heartfelt messages while locked up. When things clear he can drop music for his fans and those just fiending for more Troy Ave material.
I don’t see how releasing a mixtape while in jail takes any validity from his fans, in fact it would be the opposite. That literally makes no sense, and I don’t even like Troy Ave.
Maybe I worded it wrong because I’m not saying the mixtapes takes validity away from his fans. I’m saying the mixtape release takes away validity from his message because it just seems like a publicity move. And seeing how the mixtape is free it really serves no point in the career at this time. Just the freestyle and phone call was sufficient. Save the music for a later day wen there’s a demand for it. Now people just wanna kno Wats goin on with him and his situation. The hunger is not there for his new material just yet.
Publicity move? Dude is facing at least a decade in jail, I don’t think any move that isn’t toward his freedom is valid and any message towards that is substantial to his career. I’ll be honest I never checked for Troy Ave before this incident, so for his team to put out music while all eyes are watching him is a great PR move. Not the way I bet he would of liked or wanted, but business wise works.
I see ur point and that’s why I initially said I didn’t kno how to receive his freestyle and message because it could be taken as a PR move. I actually listened to Troy since the Bricks In My Backpack series and got hype to see him goin from rapping at a dinner table in a forest to doing songs wit Mase, Diddy, Jeezy and Ross (to name a few). I even said somethin to Tahiry about loyalty wen she took his picture down off her Instagram as if to disassociate herself wit him even tho they been knowin each other before music. So as a fan of His and as an avid Hip Hop consumer I felt the mixtape dropping was bad timing.
