I don’t want to take away from the moment but the biggest surprise here to me is that this song went platinum.

Congrats to everybody involved and to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis bringing some og’s a platinum plaque, it’s a good look.

    1. Kris Kompute says:

Song charted in the top 20. But i agree.

  4. Neighborhood Soup.. says:

And it took a white boy to help them get that. I guess it’s better late than never.

  5. Kris Kompute says:

Exactly why Macklemore is good for hip-hop. He studies the game and executes. These legend will make more off publishing from this track than any single they’ve ever had.

    1. Selorm Amuzu says:

They got a platinum plaque out of a corny song though… a song on any other day would be labelled not “hip-hop”. I’m not hating on the success Macklemore gave these legends something many rappers from many eras didn’t do

      1. Kris Kompute says:

Who gives a fuck? “Shake Ya Tailfeather”, “Lollipop” “Gettin Jiggy Wit It”. All corny…all went #1.

        White girls buy corny records.

I just heard that song in the trailer to the animated movie, PETS. cha ching.

      1. Where says:

Check it B Dot – They didn’t get publishing OR even writers share on this tune. They just were credited performers and maybe have a couple points on the master. I doubt they see much, if any of the sync income from this song. If Macklemore wanted to really honour these cats he would have thrown them some PUB no doubt.

  6. Lmfao! says:

Big shoutout to Macklemore for letting me groove on stage with him, and Ryan Lewis for composing an anthem to my lifestyle without even knowing it. #SameLove

  7. T says:

Hold the fuck up……. “The Message” didn’t go platinum?

    BULLSHIT

    1. Brian B.Dot™ Miller says:

      Look it up.

      1. T says:

I doubt they even counted records correctly back then. Didn’t Billboard change their setup in 1991?…… It shocked the industry when NWA’s “Niggaz4Life” debuted at #1, which makes me think a lot of miscounting had taken place beforehand.

        1. Brian B.Dot™ Miller says:

Probably right, but there’s no formal system. It’s DEF not documented in the RIAA database

      2. T says:

        @ B.Dot I just found this:

Cowritten by Sylvia Robinson, 1982’s “The Message” was decidedly darker and more focused on urban issues than the group’s previous party anthems and, though Flash and the Five recorded it reluctantly, the record became a platinum-selling hit within a month of its release.
