Erykah Badu On Her Controversial Video

This past Saturday, Erykah premiered her new music video “Window Seat”.  In it, the singer goes full frontal in broad daylight. Despite her artistic expression, the video was marred with some backlash. Erykah addressed it head on and the support she received from her children’s fathers.

    THAT’S ART!!!! GET OVER IT!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!!

  2. Rhyme says:

Shouldn’t have taken her clothes off. Now shes just another typical female artist in my eyes. Striping to sell records, fuck what she saying, it was unnecessary. What’s the message shes sending anyway?

Peace 2 the Gods & Earths!

  3. 3rdRail says:

“I have been naked all along in my words, actions, & deeds. That’s the real vulnerable place.”

Beautiful and true words Ms. Badu.

  4. DARKAQUA says:

BADU’S BODY OF WORK OVER THE YEARS SPEAKS FOR ITSELF….THE REFERENCE TO JFK FOR GREAT, USING NUDITY AS A REFERENCE TO PEOPLE NOT WANTING TO CONFIRM TO THE MASSES BUT SHOT DOWN FOR THEIR BELIEFS WAS A CLASSIC TOUCH

BADU HAS NEVER FOLLOWED THE SCRIPT FROM THE VERY BEGINNING…SHE’S ALWAYS BEEN NAKED TO THE INDUSTRY, NEVER FOLLOWING STATUS QUO

KUDOS TO HER…SHE DOESN’T HAVE TO EXPLAIN HERSELF….ALANIS MORRISETTE DID IT YEARS AGO FOR THE VERY REASON…STRIPPING DOWN FOR YOUR BELIEFS NO MATTER WHAT OTHERS SAY OR BELIEVE

  5. A.C.E says:

    I agree !! that’s ART .. Art Takes Balls !!!
the music world today is full of Pussy’s !

  6. DARKAQUA says:

ON ANOTHER NOTE…CAN SOMEONE POST KELIS’S NEW VIDEO ACAPELLA….THAT SH*T IS STRAIGHT FIYAH!!! 🙂

  7. Blakout615 says:

So hold on,she didnt have full permission to shoot the vid at that place, she just did everything in 1 take? Wow, she really does have some balls lmao. I def respect her artistry.

  8. RRcoolJ says:

If it were Beyonce or Lady Gaga everyone would be calling for their heads but since it’s a Neo-Soul artist she gets a pass?

The video and concept were good and she looked nice but took it too far stripping in front of kids.

  9. mmkayy says:

aha huge balls thats wha i said..

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

HONESTLY, IT WOULDN’T BE A BIG DEAL CAUSE WE’RE USE TO VIEWING BEYONCE AND LADY GAGA HALF NAKED ANYWAY…HALF NAKED IN VIDEO, COMMERCIAL, PERFORMANCES, ETC.

  11. adrian says:

She lost no respect in my eyes because she got naked for an artistic purpose. something as simple as nudity could never detract from the gravity of her accomplishments. honestly, i’m surprised that, in 2010, this is deemed controversial. (wonder if it’s that silly ol sexist cloud STILL hangin around)

i remember when hip hop embraced controversy and defended it’s allies. since 18-35 yr old white women changed the way execs marketed hip hop; it’s been plagued by a pandora’s box teeming with yellow-bellied miscreants

  13. That is the video of the year and its only March! The work that Coodie & Chike does have always been outstanding but they outdid themselves this time. They should have hooked up with a visionary like E. Badu along time ago. Salutes them >>>> http://addicted2fresh.net/blog/erykah-badu-window-seat/

  14. Money Mitch says:

lol at her kids dads all being rappers, and shes supposed to be a strong black woman and has three kids by three dads, man badu you are so respectable

  15. Nathaniel says:

    co-sign DARKAQUA to the fullest.

erykah has always been a queen. what she represents, her words and lyrics, her spirit. you get all of that everytime she opens her mouth. a true artist. thats a black queen right there niggas, and the video was another extraordinary example of that courage.

and its another example of who she is that she took so much time discussing and encouraging dialogue on twitter with the people. rather than the “fuck u, i do what i want” mentality some would have. she’s a real woman. fully clothed or naked, she’s still always given 100% of herself so the critiques should broaden their scope. staying on the surface. children are seeing worse daily. they’ll understand it better by and by…like my gramma used to say

  16. mikedreamsmusic says:

Wow. I had a feeling this was done without permission and that just makes it even more incredible. This was one of the gutsiest, wonderful piece of visual music art I’ve ever seen!

  17. dondada says:

real talk, she’d get it in the poop shoot…fuck it.

  18. QUEENZ says:

Erykah has an amazing beautiful woman, i loved every second of it. In fact, I pray that an uncensored version comes out soon.

  19. king blair says:

  20. yaboitone aka FIRST KID ON THE WAY!!!! says:

    lol @Money Mitch,

she can do AAAAAAAAAAALL of the things that make her a “typical hoe,” but as long as she comes off deep and broading the rest of the time, people ignore those facts. lmao. its the same with anything else in life though.

also: its out now. i just saw an article about this on some mainstream WHITE news site…..why isn’t she being arrested for indecent exposure? Of course im not saying i want her to be, im just sayin she did this ON VIDEO in front of A TON OF WITNESSES. lol. someone is supposed to be doing their job and pursuing this.

  21. KAE Hock says:

Aint Nobody say shit when punk ass D’Angelo went ass naked in his video… Fellas…We finally got one! Thanks Erykah!!!! :-)!!

P.S. She coulda scheduled it and did a closed shoot. She didnt have to exci…..ahem…. surprise the public, but it was artistic none the less.

  22. Pause Police says:

Sorry, this shit wasnt revolutionary, she got naked. Nice ass. Keep it movin

  23. Real Talk says:

I rather see that video than see a video of the same thing over and over and over again!!!!

  24. Simon says:

Co Sign what king blair said

  25. Pause Police says:

    Very brand-saavy marketing strategy.

Erykah’s got no problem being naked but this’ll start a good viral conversation right as her album drops. She knew what she was doing. LMAO at her making it some like some great peril. If she wanted to do it on a closed set she coudlve but she wanted to seem righteous by doing it publicly.

  26. Theloneus says:

“There were children there” “I prayed they wouldn’t be traumatized”. Funniest/ comment of the year. Clap for her.

  27. blaqscorpio says:

I don’t like double standards. One person can do something and it’s ART, but if somebody else does it they’re a Ho.

  32. psi-loqk says:

excuse me RHYME I kno u entitiled to your oppinion but that was some “99 cent shit” u just said my bad ……. but …..that was “art ” bro

  33. Shawn says:

ANYONE who questions this woman’s artistic integrity has NO credibility in commenting on the matter.
And if you think this was about selling “sex”…you might want to look at the fact there is NOTHING sexual about the video or it’s intent.

  34. A.E. says:

You do what you do – art is about being you and your body is what we own in this physical world. Our body and our mind is ours and by the grace of God we can only ask that we keep it in some sort of useable form. My dad has alzheimers and his mind is slipping away, but his physical remains. I am proud he is still here with me and I celebrate that his body remains even though his mind is slowly leaving us. I celebrate every thing the good Lord has given us as it started with our individual birth – free from clothes and a clouded mind.

I think people think you are trying to sell something they don’t understand Truth in Expression = ART

Girl – do what you do LOL!

  35. majest says:

i respect what she trying to do with this artistic message what i find kind or weird is what if a male artist pulled some shit like this? how would that be looked a pond? with the kids being there & all would it be artistic then? i def dnt think so…with that said why not? no homo

  36. Don1 says:

im biased toward Badu so i like the video, i was traumatized and i only saw the edited version

  38. L-Boogie says:

@blaqscorpio In some cases we create our own double standards. Erykah can do this and not be considered a “hoe” because her music speaks volumes of her identity and her purpose. Everybody is tripping so hard off her body because she never shows it… most people did not know she had it like that. On the contrary, yes if Beyonce did it she would be labeled as a “hoe” because Beyonce herself has decreased the respect that the public has for her as an artist and everyone knows how almost every inch of her body looks.

MOST of the people who are discrediting this video either dont understand the concept or they refuse to take the time out to do so. Most of the negative comments are about the “public nudity in front of children” and how she has supposedly transitioned into a “video hoe”. Those type of reactions are the EXACT thing she was trying to vocalize when she shot this. The idea of the video is that we have all been subjecting ourselves to “Groupthink”…. discrediting anything that we cant decipher and killing the opportunity for individual and artistic expression. Art is indeed entitled to interpretation, however I challenge many of you to go deeper and dissassociate yourselves from controlled thought and give your mind an opportunity to actually think deeper than the surface.

In addition… If my child and I were present during the shooting of this video & I took the time to understand her message… I would enlighten my child and encourage them to understand the symbolism in her actions. Most kids today have been exposed to far worse so lets not get up in arms about this. Maybe if our children were able to visit art museums & exhibits more than playing Ps3…. then in their time they would be able to comprehend risks like this in the future.

As a person who grew up in the 60s and 70s, its about time people calm down about nudity because it is only natural The message you give is much more important. Besides, we are all born naked anyway. You are behaving like a true artist!

  47. Jelani Abdul Hakeem says:

Peace and Blessings to My sistah Badu
    All prasies be to Allah!

If you look past the image of Erykah’s body, and actually understand the message that she is trying to portray you would realize this video is displaying her right to express herself freely. She’s showing you how people in this world follow each other, its like a dominos effect. Nobody is wise enough to use their natural born rights to challenge groupthink, and form an opinion against the so called “norms” in this jacked up America. She’s trying to show you what happens when you express yourself from knowing the Trurth. Her taking off her clothes is symbolizing that she is freeing herself from all the B.S that America tells us in the Classrooms, in the media, in billboards etc. Shes saying Liberate your mind and be your own person. But of course you dummies woulndn’t understand that now would you. Cause your too busy looking at her butt. SMDH
