As part of her seven-part Metropolis concept series, Janelle Monáe released her sophomore offering, The Electric Lady. With all the elements onboard, she sets things off by gliding over Prince’s guitars on “Givin Em What They Love”. She then brings in the noise and funk with Erykah Badu on the rebellious “Q.U.E.E.N.”. And if it’s raps you want, she hangs with the best of them on the title track.
The Bad Girl keeps the groove banging on “Dance Apocalyptic” and keeps the old school soul beneath her feet on “It’s Code”. Ms. Monáe belts her true vocals on the jazzy ditty “Look Into My Eyes”, before getting cozy during “PrimeTime” with Miguel. Donna Summer will forever be the queen of disco, but songs like “Ghetto Woman” are a crowning achievement. Relax yourself girl, settle down.—Big Homie
