Peace Gawd.

Disguised as a verse, Hov effortlessly exuded Knowledge of Self over Soulja Boy’s soundbed. Yeah, Black lives matter and so does this rhyme. —B.Dot

    4. Shock says:

By definition, an opinion is biased. There are no objective standards to determine who had the best verse, besides maybe the success of a song, which in case, Drake should win for Tuesday.

  6. Just Mike says:

    Can’t disagree with this one.

  7. jussayin says:

We wildin in the wreckage!….dopest verses for sure

  9. jason jerkoff says:

showed up to last supper in some brand new jays … really missed hearing him talk those silly fly shit raps ……

  10. Kinghenry says:

Hov merked this, I love when these two collaborate cos he always steps it up when Jay Elec is in the room. Elec needs a spot on the top verses of the year tho, both smashed this.

  11. Jojo says:

He didn’t kill more then drake ..reason why jay elect and jay got on it was because drakes version was fire…If drake didn’t cosign the soulja boy original song Hov would’ve never been inspired to hop on this track they probably would’ve never heard the beat…drake keeps his ear to the streets

    1. 400_Degreez says:

U sound crazy right now…do u even understand the things being said here?

    2. yeah says:

Or maybe just to datpiff… *sips tea*

    3. #IDGT says:

hov killed it more than drake.

  12. ELOHIM says:

Jay Elect’s verse on here and Kingdom kill this verse. Jay Elects Kingdom remix is verse of the year, but we know rap radar not gonna promote to us that WE ARE THE REAL JEWS

    1. Dan Karlin says:

Jay Elect’s verse on “To Me, To You” also deserved recognition.

    2. marty mcfly says:

On the same song Jay E said “from Solomon to Sambo to Django its facts”… “Tribe of Shabazz stylin on the record”…

  13. IAT says:

    Bullshit! You fucking dick rider

  14. yeah says:

Okay if y’all are going to be mad, who else then? Don’t just call the guys dick riders if you don’t have a full opinion, because this one actually was flames

  15. yorapper says:

Holy bias batman! 99% of rapradar don’t even remember this song.

    1. Shock says:

By definition, an opinion is biased. There are no objective standards to determine who had the best verse, besides maybe the success of a song, which in case, Drake probably should win for Tuesday.

  16. Dan Karlin says:

    …eh, fuck it. Too easy.

  17. Khaleel says:

I’m not going to act as ignorant or uneducated as all of the other commenters on this website, but I must say its really frustrating how bias you guys (Elliott and B.Dot) are. I know you won’t respond because you guys want to maintain this sense that you are better than us, but I know you’ll see this so I’m still gunna say it: as someone who is a frequent — well, less and less nowadays, but still — visitor of RapRadar, its pretty offensive how bias your guys’ “journalism” is. You deny it in interviews, but there is obviously a reason why so many people criticize you for being bias towards people like Hov, Drake, and Ross. I mean, just look at your lists you’ve posted so far: TWO of the five songs were to Hov, and one was to Drake, WHO DIDN’T EVEN RAP IN THE VERSE. Ross, who had not one, but TWO of the most disappointing albums of the year, didn’t get mentioned anywhere on your list. Yes, in Hov’s case both were great verses, but you mean to tell me both of them were better then Kendrick’s on “Smokin and Drinkin”, Young Thug’s on “About the Money”, or Ab Soul’s on the Prhyme album? Not to mention, Raekwon’s on Oxymoron, Gangsta Boo on Run the Jewels, or Earl Sweatshirt on the Freddie Gibbs/Madlib project. I know you guys say your mainstream, but honestly, you have a lot of influence on what all of these idiots who call themselves “hip-hop” heads buy, and its a shame that you destroy the culture you say you love all in the name of making some connections and getting more hits.

    1. diggz says:

young thug on about that money! such a dope verse where that at?

      1. icepick316 says:

Young thug?? Nigga hold this capital L.

        1. diggz says:

I don’t get the L reference. Did I spell it wrong?? Verse was dope, not a fan of his but that verse was at least actually a song. Dude above me agrees!

    2. diggz says:

This aint even a song it’s a freestyle too lol wtf

    3. Hussle says:

damn u said some real shit. YN wont even bother replying. Bdot might. So please B.Dot address homie cuz he aint 100% off

    4. hard_shit says:

Wow, nigga I’ve never felt more enlightened off a Rap Radar comment then the way I felt after reading this shit. You was right about everything you just said. Notice how they wont post their criteria for what they be looking for or a rubric or anything either.

      1. marty mcfly says:

He said Raekwon’s verse on Oxymoron and Gangsta Boo’s verse on Run The Jewels, Earl on Gibbs album, Ab Soul on Prhyme… was better then Jayz on We Made It. Seriously? Like for real? COMEONSON. I think some of you’ll need to give that Jay verse alot more credit for a bunch of different factors in that verse that go well beyond just some rhyming words that don’t mean much.

    5. Selorm Amuzu says:

As much as I can agree with you with that comment, I would have to disagree, it’s one thing to have a good verse, it’s another thing to have a good verse with impact outside the track and Jay definitely done that

    6. Dumb says:

I hear you but maybe they really liked Jay verse like that

    7. Shock says:

      Young Thug? You are disqualified.

    8. Nigga mentioned Young Thug. SMH. ENTIRE COMMENT VOIDED.

Seen It All Hov verse > We Made It Hov verse #TIMELESS

    9. Guillaume Pilon says:

young thug dont go with good verses

      i stopped reading after that

      sorry bro

      1. Mr. C Anderson says:

I didn’t know, so I did the knowledge. I mean…its not a bad verse. Its hard to make out listening to it, but….when that first line drops people are moved and now after reading through it. I don’t know man. All I’m saying I suppose is, its not terrible. Maybe even decent?

Illest verse of the year. These commentators lost me with the hate on this one. I swear there must be a firm hiring kids to comment on these sites because voting this 1.3 make zero sense

THE THIRST BY BENSON “B.THOT” MILLER!!!! HA!!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

    1. pimpsquadpop says:

bro hov verse was tight but drake set the template… rapradar on some other shit for saying this the hottest verse of 2014…

  23. marty mcfly says:

People really gonna front on this verse from Jayz? Be real with yourself fools. Jay went crazy on this shit end of story.

    1. pimpsquadpop says:

      not better than drake verse…

      1. marty mcfly says:

Oh no, its better… On the surface you may think them words is just rhymes but Jay is saying some shit thats far more deeper then that and he’s stylin on the shit. This verse hit the culture like Lupita Nyongo stuntin on stage after 12 Years A Slave… Its one thing to rhyme, its another to make statements. Jay makes statements with these rhymes (social, political, cultural, theological etc…). Drake does not.

        1. pimpsquadpop says:

I get what you’re saying about the content of Jay-Z verse, but Jigga mimicked the flow from Drake… That’s like I make a verse for Dej Loaf’s record “Try Me” with her melody and my words…

          1. tjp says:

Jay-Z mimicking Drake’s flow? I’m a Drake fan but you’re taking it to another level here man. You do realize that if it wasn’t for Jay-Z, Drake wouldn’t be around right? And for the comment about Drake’s verse being better than Jay’s, please start paying attention to lyrics more instead of having your brain washed with garbage about money, hoes and weed.

          2. pimpsquadpop says:

The cadence from Jay-Z’s verse is the exact cadence from Drake’s verse. I’m fully aware of Jay-Z’s influence on Drake and I’m not making this a Drake vs. Jay-Z issue. The bottom line is that I can’t respect the fact that rapradar gave Jay-Z verse of the year for this particular rap. Content is a matter of taste and not a reflection of skill…

btw I don’t listen to rap music to give me direction in my life and I feel sorry for anyone who does…

          3. marty mcfly says:

The beat is the exact same beat too. I hear your point about cadence but that does not negate or take away from the lyrics which is 10x more important then the cadence. 99.9% of Hip Hop period is using a cadence that has already been around for decades.

          4. pimpsquadpop says:

You think cadence is 10x less important than lyrics? I respectfully disagree with that ratio in relation to hip hop. The rhythm of your words over the rhythm of a beat is what really brings a song together and that’s the reason a bunch of rappers who have no substance are winning…

Dej Loaf “Try Me” and the Migos “Versace” are the best examples of my point.

          5. marty mcfly says:

In this case YES. How many times have you heard Jay rap? At this point we know any cadence he uses is gonna be dope. Again, though it makes sense to rhyme in the same cadence because this is not his song, its a freestyle where he replied back to Drake with that exact same beat and in this case the LYRICS are ten times better then just the cadence. Almost all cadences and flows in Hip Hop have been used over a million times now but the actual lyrics is whats unique to the artist. IN THIS CASE, the lyrics are more important. How many classic Hip Hop records are there just because of cadence? Now how many classic records does Hip Hop have because of lyrics? Not saying this is classic but again, him using the same cadence was the point in the first place but Jay slaughtered the shit with better lyrics. 50 Cent used the same cadence a bunch of times on his mixtapes over other peoples beats because that is part of this particular style of Hip Hop in alot of cases. We Know for facts that Jay don’t NEED to use any particular cadence. He did it because he wanted to on this. Its an intentional shot at Drake stylistically. The lyrics throw the cadence right out the window and again 99.9% of all rappers period are using a cadence that thousands of other rappers have already used.

          6. pimpsquadpop says:

Catalog vs Catalog Jay-Z beats Drake hands down imo 24/7/365… MGHG vs NWTS is where Drake won big time even though Jigga album was quality. I’m familiar with about 90% of Jay-Z’s music since “Hawaiian Sophie” and I’d be a moron to think that he isn’t one of the top 5 rappers of all time. Drake is not a top 5 rapper imo. Bottom line, I don’t believe that Jay-Z deserved the verse of the year for that verse because to be honest 0-100 nigga real quick is way better imo.

          7. marty mcfly says:

On top of that Jay broke outta that cadence and switched up as the verse progressed.

          8. pimpsquadpop says:

Like how he do when he quote Biggie Smalls. I get it, but like I said… I just disagree with rapradar’s positioning of his verse in their list.

          9. marty mcfly says:

Yes that is also intentional. Jay and BIG were friends so when BIG died Jay said he would keep his name alive. That was in 1997 and every album since then he quotes a a few bars from him outta love for him. Jay a have a thousand bars on his own album, quote BIG twice and you people a act like he repeated BIG word for word. Smh

          10. pimpsquadpop says:

I was actually agreeing with you. I’ve never discredited Jay-Z as a artist and he’s in my top 5 of all time, but I can’t give him credit for the verse of the year with that ok verse he spit over the Drake beat. U really felt the content and guess who else felt the content? Me. That’s who. I just liked many other verses I heard over the last 12 months.

          11. marty mcfly says:

I don’t even have to really feel the content. The point is the content is there. Lets be real most these verse out here have NO content, they mean absolutely nothing and are about nothingness. They simply rhyme and thats it.

          12. pimpsquadpop says:

Content value is subjective… I definitely think the message in music is important, but it isn’t the most valuable component to a song.

          13. marty mcfly says:

Thats why I said IN THIS PARTICULAR SONG. In this song the content is not subjective, its obviously present and I NEVER said its the most valuable component to A song but IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE it IS. This song was already out before Jay E and JayZ did the rmx. Once people heard this freestyle the cadence simply no longer mattered and even if it was some peoples first time hearing it, the LYRICS are so far beyond anything else in this song that the cadence simply doesn’t matter. The LYRICS hold so much weight here that it went beyond the flow. Nobody said hey this song is sick how Jayz used the same cadence as Drake in the first four lines… because that just didnt matter anymore due to the lyrical slaughter and substance of the content.

          14. Quince says:

drake mimicked the cadience from amigos. When drake first came out he mimicked big sean cadience. whats your point?

          15. pimpsquadpop says:

My point is the fact that I don’t think Jay-Z should’ve received verse of the year for that verse he won it for… I think Jigga’s a spectacular artist, but better verses were done by other artists last year.

  24. El Fenomeno says:

these both guess verses. We have a tie. lol

  25. marty mcfly says:

Some of you just don’t wanna give it up. You naming other verses from people that you know you did not raise an eyebrow for when you heard it. When you heard Jay go at Drake over the art shit he was talking, with the Ace Of Spaces like a Oscar, black tux like a mobster, don’t make me RRRRAAA ya, black out in court with the melatonin, 7th letter made, chasing Yakub back in the cage, showing up to the last supper in new Js, true and livin, new religion, 8th wonder, alien superstition, kings and queens and Michael Jordan rings going stupido? You know damn well you was feeling that shit like God himself was rapping… Stop frontin and give it up nigga, shit was definitely the best guest verse.

  26. GodlyAssNigga says:

“Sorry Mr. Drizzy 4 so much art talk, silly me rappin bout shit I really bought.”

  27. pimpsquadpop says:

this site is wack for this… drake verse was better than jay-z’s by far.

  28. Louiev says:

This was actually one of my fav guest verses from 2014. & it’s also proof to ppl who swear Jay is “washed up”.

  29. Stanfield says:

“Gawd” ??? Only black homosexuals say that. Spelling names & words incorrectly always been loser shit.

  30. hahahahaha says:

lol at how everyone is lambasting all these lists and finally getting sick of RR’s bullshit. about fucking time. this thing is gunna be a fucking monsoon when they don’t even mention run the jewels 2 in their list because it wasn’t “mainstream” enough

  31. rickyunos says:

Im fixin to give RapRadar a run for the money.. new site dropping in 60 days.. im gon show yall how to run a site..

      1. rickyunos says:

We’re still tryna set on the name Kris..we’re down to 2 names..finalizing as I type..I’ll let you know in the next few days..thx for inquiring..

  32. Your Father says:

I have a feeling y’all are trying to sweeten Jay for a CROWN before his album drops. I don’t agree with this.

  33. ikeluv88 aka Pablo P says:

SMH JAY Z AND DRAKE AGAIN

  34. Word says:

You guys got very lazy with these lists. Just a year ago youd post some bars too but I guess thats too much now

  35. The Incredible Creation says:

need that Elec album tho http://alltheparticulars.blogspot.com/

  36. Nattown says:

I rarely comment on Rap Radar but I’m on the site 6 or 7 times a day checking for what’s new and reading the comments. I personally don’t have a high opinion for Elliot Wilson as a professional – I don’t know him as a person. Nor do I have a high opinion of his minion – both whom I don’t know as people to judge. With that being said, the bias on this site is sometimes outrageously loud. However, I don’t mind that. We can go elsewhere for other things. I don’t think Rap Radar pretends that there are no other options for Rap music.

With that being said, I must agree that this does belong at #1. Is it because its Jay-Z? Yes. That’s the point. We must stop acting like names and resumes don’t count. “If this was someone else…” isn’t applicable because that isn’t real life. Your regular life opinion on a basketball game won’t front page ESPN, even if its the same shared opinion of President Obama. You “earn” a voice in this world.

Jay-Z did deliver substance. Substance. That is the word that took a vacation during 2014. Don’t do the naming of 4 or 5 oddball projects, but a person with a very loud voice loaded an entire verse full of substance, and it was culturally relevant and empowering. The Knowledge of Self as the poster called it, and its in a cup for us to drink. Not only does the content come strong but the lyrics and delivery match it. Also, lets not act like the verse only stands out because the song was horrible. Jay Electronica took a sledgehammer to this beat and did exactly what we expect from him. A lot of these other Best of 2014’s are total suspect like Ross missing from Disappointing Albums, but I have to agree with this one.

  37. HovGawd says:

Name three reasons why this shouldn’t win guest verse of the year?

    Three reasons it should:

    – Hov’s metaphors are at a higher level
    – The flow is intricate
    – Man disses Drake on his track and flows better than him. You tellin’ me when a King gets off his throne and delivers a verse like this it’s not worthy? fuckouttahere

    1. HovGawd says:

      “All praises due!”

  38. nick says:

black thought the imperial?? that shit was my fav of the year.

  39. Cinsere says:

Um… since when are freestyles considered “guest” verses?? I mean, y’all gotta at least TRY to come off as credible. Niggaz really stretching definitions just to get Hov up there. smh

  40. ITS ME says:

LMFAO GO FUCKIN FIGURE!!! RR KISSING JAY Zs ASS SOME MORE!!!! PITIFUL!

  41. blackbeltbreeze says:

hmmm…seen it all is cold game, and yeah this verse hit hard because he was styling and analyzing knowledge of self in the same verse, while also flipping that faster flow, and also not getting shown up by jay-elec. i think killer mike was at jay’s neck. his feature on prhyme is crazy. soul too. but the verse of the year was hands down black thought on pharoah monch PTSD album. song is called Rapid Eye Movement. thought and soul both dropped albums people largely ignored though, so people translate that to their features too. not the case at all. that thought verse is a master class for how mc’s should aspire to approach the mic.
