With J.Cole’s album now arriving on June 18th, he’ll be going head to head with Kanye West. In an interview with The Juice, he discusses moving his album date up.
“Instantly the lightbulb [turned on]… it got real. I made one phone call to somebody that would know, just to make sure first. As soon as I got it confirmed, I was like, ‘Yo…’ The idea hit me instantly: ‘You got to go to that date.
I’m not going to sit [here]… I worked too hard to come a week later after Kanye West drops an amazing album. It’d be like, ‘Oh and J.Cole dropped too, a week later.’ Nah. I’m going to go see him on that date. He’s the greatest. So it’s like, I’m a competitor by nature so it was instant, it wasn’t even a thought.”
Heaven’s door? In case you’re wondering, Jermaine spoke to MTV a few weeks ago about the concept behind Born Sinner. Album drops June 18th. Deluxe cover after the jump.
”It’s not necessarily a church theme and it’s not really about church. I like my album themes to be metaphors because it gives me the freedom to speak about something else that’s going on in my life, so the Born Sinner thing is not about church, it’s not even about religion. It’s using that as canvas to get other messages across and that’s what the album will be.”
In the second episode of J.Cole’s BornSinner.com series, guest K-Dot shares his upbringing, praises Cole, and shares advice from the likes of Jason Estrada, Erykah Badu and more. Born Sinner arrives June 25.
