Eminem Covers Complex (Dec/Jan 2010)
Marshall graces the cover of Marc Ecko’s periodical this month. The feature’s already available to read, but here are some highlights:
On Relapse 2:
So the sequel won’t reflect your reaction to the first one and its reception?
Eminem: Well, when I finished Relapse, I had a whole album of material that didn’t make it that I wasn’t ready to throw away, so that was going to be Relapse 2. But then I got with Dre in Hawaii and started recording more, and now the new material has knocked out all the old songs. But yeah, the new material is definitely different. Making Relapse, I was still working the drugs out of my system, so there was a lot of…just jokey shit. It was a lot of punchline-y, funny, shock value—kind of going back to The Slim Shady LP. And that was cool, but I’ve kind of flipped the page. Now I’m going for songs instead of one-liners. I don’t want to make shit that you hear once and then the joke’s over; I want to make records that you could play a hundred times, a thousand times.
On “Forever”:
Speaking of being on your game, who had the second-best verse on “Forever”?
Eminem: Who had the second-best verse? [Laughs.] I don’t know, I like everybody’s verses—but I like Drake’s verse a lot. I wouldn’t say I had the best verse; everybody approached the beat different. Kanye was crazy, too, and Wayne. I just saw the beat differently than anybody else did; for some reason, I felt like the beat was a double-time beat, so I rapped faster.
On Sobriety:
So you’re stone-sober these days?
Eminem: Yeah, it’ll be 18 months on the 20th [of October]. I realized I can’t touch anything, and that’s why I’m clean right now and why I’m going to stay clean. My brain just doesn’t know when to shut off. When I do something I have to do it all the way—that goes for music, with a high-hat, a snare drum, a rhyme, everything. I have to push it to the extreme. That’s how I realized I have addictive behavior. Somebody told me this once, that the thing that makes me bad is the same thing that makes me good at other things.
On MTV’s Hottest MC’s List:
In case someone wants to put money on it. [Laughs.] Speaking of 50, he’s been venting about his placement on MTV’s “Hottest MCs” list. You were excluded.
Eminem: You know, when I heard that the other day, I didn’t really think too much of it. My only comment was, “That’s some peoples’ opinion.” It’s their opinion, and opinions can’t be wrong. As long as I’m comfortable with what I’m doing and I’m comfortable in my zone, then that’s that.
first question answer made my day….
r2 will be a classic

knew that cover line was familiar
Fuck cant wait i want R2 NOW!! but why just 5 new songs for refill why dosent he put out all of them that were suppose to be R2
HEHE 18 months on my birthday 🙂
man the old em wouldve ripped through all of the braintrust this is a good interview who ever did it did a good job becuz most people ignore questions like who do you think had the 1nd best verse on Forever and How do you feel being excluded like magazines are failing becuz these interviewers are asking the same questions and also you can just go to a newstand and read a magazine and put it bacc but this sounds like a good interview
@ PITRI i was wondering the same thing if he starting over on relapse 2 why isnt he releasing them songs that he said consisted of r2 in the beginning when he finished the 1st relapse
@kingill89 Probably the 5 new songs are the 5 best ones out of all of them..idk..

Still waters run Deep
Read the whole thing,a good interview.I hope and think R2 will be the perfect album. And Em doesnt release songs he dont feel is good enough, thats why he only has a few new tracks(the best ones)on Refill.
oh man the first question just made my day too. Relapse 2 is gona be a classic. he is not gona be talkin bout drugs and makin that accent. he is gona make hits. a CLASSIC.
“I don’t want to make shit that you hear once and then the joke’s over; I want to make records that you could play a hundred times, a thousand times.”
that gets me excited no homo.. cant wait for this album.. hip hop needs this
i really cant wait for this
if em delivers a classic he will down as the GOAT imo
YEEEEESSSSS SHAAADDDDDDDYYYYYYY A THOUSAND TIMES!!!
Great interview because he didn’t repeat the same questions every interviewer would ask he came with a new questions that the fans are interested in

Kayne and Wayne’s verses where crazy??..come on my dude they was mad wack on that track for real..their two of the worse rappers in the game..theres no need to lick their assholes Em..can’t wait for the next shit to drop!!
“I listened to the whole album and was like, “Wow! My man is that dope—Lil Wayne is fucking dope!”
stop hating on wayne. honestly… if one the GOAT thinks he’s dope… he knows alot more about rap than u little internet haters do. wayne is dope, thats it..
I LOVE EMINEM HES A GREAT MC
wow…..Refill..12/22
I don’t want to make shit that you hear once and then the joke’s over; I want to make records that you could play a hundred times, a thousand times.”
:):)
@ koa29
Just because one man has an opinion about someones shit doesn’t mean that it’s engraved in stone.
Eminem said himself in this interview “That’s some peoples’ opinion.” It’s their opinion, and opinions can’t be wrong.”
but also opinions can’t be right when supposed to be used as a support for factual evidence.
Eminem thinks Wayne is dope, some people don’t but that doesn’t mean that Eminem is obviously right. It’s a lot of people in this world that don’t get down with Eminem, does that mean that Em’s wack? No…Opinions are opinions homie.
ON ANOTHER NOTE.
To whoever said Kanye was weak on Forever.
I don’t agree.. a few weeks ago I may have but last week I gave the song a THOROUGH run through and honestly, Kanye goes in on his part.
Kanye’s whole entire verse was deep.
..Talked about how he first got in the game it and his ambitions
“I used to have hood dreams, big fame, big chains”
..you don’t see how he’s incorporating the seasons with basketball and making money.
That metaphor was ill.
“I went hard all FALL like the BALL-TEAM.
Just so I could make it rain, OFF-SPRING”
..He thought that it was gone be nothing but glorified moments once he got big and that would make him happy.
“When a nigga blow up they gone build statues from me,
Old money, benjamin buttons…what? nothing.
Super bad chicks giving me McLovin
you would think I ran the world like Michelles Husband”
..But he realized that all that glory couldn’t compensate for the pain that he endured in his personal life
“Take the grammy’s back JUST to have my granny back!”
..even after a while the fame made him even more arrogant and he started pulling asinine stunts.
“Wanted to be a star, turned into a maniac.
All the way in Hollywood and I can’t even act”
..He’s realized that the paparazzi makes matters worse with tabloids and this shit ain’t all it’s cracked up to be and he no longer wants it.
“They pulled the camera’s out, and God damn he snapped
I USED to want this thing forever, yall can have it back”
I used to knock Kanye’s verse too but honestly, his substance was one of the best.
It’s just Drakes delivery, metaphors and all appealed to everyone better.
and Em….shit…Em killed it regardless.
“I don’t want to make shit that you hear once and then the joke’s over; I want to make records that you could play a hundred times, a thousand times.”
what i’ve been waitin to hear!!! I can smell the best Eminem album so far comin up!!
@ Cool
Cosign Yea manu Ginobli is a beast he been a beast since he got in the league too dude is like the white kobe Kobe Bryant the shit he be pulling and he can yam on niggas
Can’t wait … sooo excited to hear what he’s got next for us. Great interview!
Luv Luv Luv Em 🙂
wow interesting interview. i can’t fucking wait for relapse 2!
could be eminems best album
I just read the full interview. The section about the streaming porn had me cracking up. Reminded me so much of when Quagmire discovered internet porn.
Em we want you to fuckin kill the game!!! Ten years deep in the game and still running this shit…since day one!!
best rapper alive is @ Interscope!!!!!!!! Shout Out to Eminem!
I hope Em reaches out to a few artists like Meth, LL, Nas, etc…. and drop some dope collabs
We still waiting on Bad meets evil 2
Its been over. other mc’s just retire
MADE MY DAY!!
Refill is going to be wack, but Relapse 2 will be a classic. Em needed to drop a shitty album like Relapse to fuel him to make a classic. This is his one opportunity, one shot (lol) to make an amazing album.
zero Expectations from Refill..but will still but iy….But i hope Relapse 2 is as good or better than Marshall Mathers LP..its been like 4-5 years since such a dope album came out to be honest
YESS im so glad he said he back to makin songs like MM LP and the eminem show…lets go Em Hip Hop needs this!!
