Something I’ve realised recently…
Artists put mixtapes out before the release of their retail albums, but the only people who *really* go all out, download the album, bang it in the whip etc, are the “core” fans, who would go and purchase the CD anyways.
To do the “big numbers” you have to appeal to the other demographic, the teenagers, and suburban kids. Who lets face it won’t know an artist has a mixtape out let alone listen to it.
