Uncle Luke Upset At Hip Hop Honors

This year’s VH1 Hip Hop Honors is paying homage to the South. But not everyone is happy on how they’re being recognized. Uncle Luke tells VIBE he’s upset for not being honored for his entrepreneurial contributions.

“This year I’m supposed to be honored, but they only want to honor me as a member of the 2 Live Crew,” says Campbell, who also led Miami’s bass music scene for much of the ‘80s and early ‘90s. “They want to honor Master P for his business savvy and they want to honor Jermaine Dupri for his business savvy and I’m kind of offended by that. We have basically been talking it out, but it’s just so sad that people just don’t know my history. They try to link me with a group and not see me as a businessman. Luke Records was the first independent black owned record company owned by a rapper. We were the first to distribute our own product. There’s just so many first…the first to have an independent R&B group to go platinum with H-Town.

“For an organization like VH1 to try to say I’m just the first person to go to the Supreme Court over music censorship and be a part of the 2 Live Crew…I told them the other day, ‘Just go fuck yourself.’ We were even the first to have a street team. That wasn’t discovered by [Loud Records head] Steve Rifkind. I love Steve to death, but they keep giving him the credit. I don’t want to be a part of it unless you honor what I’ve done in a proper way. I’ve never asked anyone to do anything. But when you ask me to be a part of something, I’m not going to let you disrespect me.”

    and Luke is 100% correct

  2. PB says:

This is all true. They better stop letting the 80’s babies and New Yorkers do the research and instead hire some folks that are from the south to handle the program.

  3. Realniggashit says:

Real Talk i always people can’t get made at the truth cause it’s the truth

  4. Ekiti says:

I have to agree with Uncle Luke there. Dude is right. VH1 be on some fuckery shit! It is theri way or the highway, and you have to give Luke props for speaking his mind. Half of those ppl which VH1 has honoured in the Hip Hop scene don’t even deserve to be honoured.

This is the grammys all over again!

  5. JustSaying says:

That’s right Luke go for yours man.

  6. pushakey says:

when u let people who come from outside the culture tell our story, they are never going to get it right. mtv and vh1 didnt care about hip hop when it was young, the only reason they care now is cuz its lucrative. people deserve recognition, but mtv/vh1 should not be doing it, thats like white people being in charge of the native american museum, luke skywalker is that dude…

  7. Osiris says:

They better stop letting the 80′s babies and New Yorkers do the research and instead hire some folks that are from the south to handle the program.

    ^^^

Yup, agree 100% here. It’s bad enough that New York bias was allowed to fuck stuff up the first 20 or so years of hip hop, as far as properly recognizing and covering non-NYC artists….but then it was at least more understandable because NYC had something of a dominant position in the game and kind of dictated a lot of things….today that’s no where near the situation, the epicenter of hip hop has moved south to cities like ATL and MIA and NYC has been reduced to something of minor local market…things should reflect that

  8. DunkDonDaDa says:

Luke is so on point and for the record 2 live crew is actually a west coast group

  9. pissed says:

word. luke has every right to be a little upset about that. They forget Luke was running his own independent label back in the 80’s. I think he handled it well too, I mean most pf these dude would have let the egos fly & kanye’d the event but Luke just wants his story told correctly. That’s what’s up…make sure these new school kids get the history & lesson of our culture told the correct way.

  10. mac DIESEL says:

THAT’S WUT’S UP LUKE!!!! THAT’S SOME TRUTH RIGHT THERE!!!! I REMEMBER I USED TO COME DOWN TO MIAMI FOR VACATION AS A SHORTY!!!! LUKE WAS RUNNIN’ SHIT!!!! FUCK VH1!!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  11. Digga says:

They better stop letting the 80′s babies and New Yorkers do the research and instead hire some folks that are from the south to handle the program.

I call bulls**t on that statement. I f**ks with Luke and give credit where credit is due. He was the first to do a lot of things in this game. Respect to all these cats really owning their own sh**, no matter WHAT region they come from. Don’t go lumping the whole area as a bunch of salty f**ks that only care about NY rap.

  12. DARKAQUA says:

I AGREE WITH UNCLE LUKE, BUT WHO THE HELL MADE “VH1 Hip Hop Honors” THE AUTHORITY ON HIP HOP??? LIKE REALLY…WHY PEOPLE EVEN SWEATING THIS CUT & PASTE MESS OF A SHOW??? I WOULD COUNT MY MONEY AND BE HAPPY…JUST SAYIN

THE DEF JAM TRIBUTE WAS GARBAGE

  13. Da Business says:

Ppl @ VH1 REALLY NEED TO STEP THEIR RESEARCH GAME UP. Luke is 100% right!!! This man deserve more credit for how he influence the game. I’m from Miami so I might be a ‘lil bias, BUT LUKE & THE WHOLE MIAMI BASS MOVEMENT WAS HUGH BACK THEN. I remember watching the BOX(remember that?!?!) and a Luke video was in HEAVY rotaion. Shit, back than those videos were the closest thing we had to porn lol.

1st to go platium indepently, 1st to get that “parental advisory” sticker on a lp, 1st to usher in SEX into hip hop, 1st to break new artist(indepently)…w/ acts like H-Town(platium), Hometeam, and Posion Clan(JT Money).

AGAIN, I may be a ‘lii bias but the truth is in the puddin’

  14. ironic says:

big ups to luke, the man ain’t lyin’…..

  15. Ac@pella! says:

Uncle Luke’s got a point. I’d be heated too. Honor the man’s legacy the way it should be. This nigga’s the first one to basically merge the porn business and rap business together amongst other things in Southern hip hop…

  16. wow says:

    100% co-sign Luke´s opinion!

But all u NY haters out here need to eat a big fat D.!!!

NEW YORK is and will always be the fuckinh mecca of hip-hop ´cause that´s where it was invented!

I don´t care about 60´s, 70´s 80´s 90´s or double zero baby´s, black, white, latino just get it right g-damn! it ain´t that f-ing hard!

  17. will says:

sad bro I mean Jermaine Dupri is getting honored before Jay-Z and Eminem its no disrespect to the south you kno i understand niggas like Scarface Geto Boyz Outkast Dungeon Family but come on Cuz Jermaine Dupri JD is a big producer but most of his stuff or his best joints are RnB

I mean Kool G.Rap havent been honored yet

    shit is bullshit

  18. Duh Troof says:

And let’s not forget his battle with the Feds of the freedom of speech. He protected the rights of ALL artists to express their art as they want.

    VH1 don’t know shit!

  19. DunkDonDaDa says:

@ will, JD is dat dude in the south, he’s an icon in not just the south but hip hop in general, he’s no different than diddy and dr dre, granted he does do a lot in r and b but he’s a true b boy and he’s one of the first in the south to not be looked at as a Bama and country. He represents cats in the south like myself who are not dope boys, who don’t slang in the trap, but are true hip hop heads and b boys

  20. DunkDonDaDa says:

    @ will
Btw I hate when corny cats like u say I understand cats like scarface geto boys DF and outlast being honored, but what do u really know about those groups to say dat, other than those groups being so called credible in NY

    Smart Extra Dumb Cats

  21. Dj Kev West says:

This is too true. Uncle Luke is a legend and should honored for a lot more things than 2 Live Crew. His solo music was more legendary imo

  22. King JuggaNott says:

He acts as if they care, they are only honoring us because they HAVE to. If they didn’t they know their show would just look stoopid. It’s like they HAVE to acknowledge us.

  23. bbe4eva says:

    i have 2 agree wit him…and if u dont ride 4 yaself,whos gonna ride wit u???
if u gonna tell his stroy and honor him,do it right!!!
and tha sad part is all reall hiphop historians supposed 2 kno that!
every person who commented knows this so how did VH1 drop yja ball???

  24. Nathaniel says:

    fuck VH1

that is all. peace to Luke. can’t really add shit other than that, everything the nigga said was true. and i agree with DARKAQUA

who the FUCK made VH1 the authority on our shit? that’s why we need our OWN network. BET ain’t representing right. it’s soulless

  25. will says:

    @Dunk DonDaDa

Cuz 1st off Nigga Im 4rm LA So dont come at me with that NY Hate

Nigga what Hiphop album is JD credible for like I said all the songs he is known for are RnB songs there is nothign Hiphop about Jermaine Dupri My Nigga Nothing

Nigga The Dungeon Family not big so the fact I know About them is shown I am a fan of music my Nig Period Im not secluded to one region of Music I bet you Never heard of Niggas Like BlaccMilk Terrace Martin Problem Roccett Hi-Tek becuz a nigga got have a dumb ass souther drawl to appeal to your ears

I fuccs with the South the good music aint no way Jermaine Dupri has had as big as an impact as them cats up there in Hiphop no fuccing way

you serious you saying Jermaine Dupri should be honored before Kool G.Rap my Nigga c’mon son

I mean Dr.Dre hasnt been honored yet so how in the fucc should Jermaine Dupri be honored cuz you made yourself look like a jaccass Dr.dre who has introduced us to Eazy-E Ice Cube DOC’s the Snoop D O Double G’s and the group that said motherfucc the police and Eminem and has had 2 classics bacc to bacc and one of the most anticipated HIPHOP albums to come out I mean real talk Dr.Dre found Bow Wow before Jermaine Dupri LOL WTF P yea Luke Of course but Jermaine Dupri Come the fucc on my nigga we in the year where we have lost Mr.Magic and Guru and Jermaine Dupri who best album to his name is Usher Confessions is getting honored before both these guys Come the fucc on NIgga Be serious Think before you Type Dumb ass nigga

  26. will says:

just becuz you wear hiphop clothes and rocc cartoon character chains and drive cars that hiphop artist drive dont make you Hiphop

I mean thats where niggas get confused thats why we have niggas having Beef With Boxers becuz they are forgetting that a rapper has to actually rap to be a rapper and not look like one

Im mean I admire his success but it doesnt have much to do with hiphop If Jermaine was to put into Bow Wow and kris Kross career as the same effort he put into Mariah’s and Usher’s career he wouldnt even be a Big Name becuz Bow Wow and Kris Kross dont have that much talent but he would be more Hiphop Jermaine Make hits and all of those hits are RnB songs end of story.

  27. apple juice says:

true but thats what happens when you overshadow your art with an overdose of sin…

  28. bigfamily says:

if your honoring business acumen and not giving it up to Tony Draper and J.Prince, then I’m calling Bullshit.

  29. Theloneus says:

You people are dumbasses. The moment I saw VH1 and hip hop in the same sentence I knew shit was gonna be fucked up. Luke you my dude and I got mad respect for you. Fuck VH1 homie they just some mad corporate dick riders.

  30. DunkDonDaDa says:

    @ will

vh1 are doing the show to honor down south artist so any dip shit would know that now is not the proper time to honor gay ass dre,g rap,mr magic or the GOAT hov. So So Def is the 1st down south label to gain attention on a national level. rap a lot, suave house, and Luke records were more so sucessful on a regional level. Not saying those labels weren’t hot but who do you think a Corp like vh1 will put the spotlight on, those labels or the bad boy/def jam/ death row of the south which is so so def. again jd is more sucessful with r and b and pop but he has worked with everyone from whodini to jay z when it comes to hip hop

So with that being said WILL eat a DICK!!!!!!

  31. Shawn says:

I respectfully will disagree. Sugarhill Records was a Black owned label. And H-Town was a one hit wonder.
Luke’s biggest contribution to HIP HOP was with the 2-Live Crew. It changed the way rap was recorded, package and sold from that point on..So to want to pretend that didn’t happen is crazy..
I think he had a successful label…but he in no way has the pedigree of Dupri and hasn’t redefined indy the way P did.
Bass music, while great at times, had it place in the region for a short period…not nationally. Dupri, P they were national..P even bought back the low budget movies with Bout it!..
I say gracefully bow out if you feel disrespected. And don’t make this a New York thing because in my opinion there are way more people worth honoring than Luke

  32. Da Business says:

    @ Shawn

I feel where you’re comin’ from, but I also have to respectfully disagree. Don’t get me wrong, JD is the man. shit, the very 1st record I ever brought was the 1st Kris Kross lp back when I was in the 4th grade.

But to say that Luke was only a regional success is false. Luke’s 1st 2 “solo” lp’s where platium records and u & I know that in order for that to happen u’d have to reach a fan base beyond ur region.

Luke laid out the blueprint for cats like JD, Tony Draper(Sauve House), J Prince(Rap A Lot), and Master P as far as the south is concerned, when it comes to business. Musically u can say what u want about him, but today u still c his influence on the game just like u c NWA’s.

    THIS MAN DESERVES HIS PROPS.
