Pusha T Explains Jay-Z Line On “Ill’in”

After much anticipation, Young Jeezy finally dropped his follow up mixtape, Trap Or Die 2. One of the standout cuts is his collaboration with the Clipse on the song “Ill’in”. On it, Pusha T threw this line aimed at Jay-Z.

“Tell Hova don’t pass the crown so soon, Unless he got a crown for every writer in the room/There’s too many spirits on these ghostwritten tunes, So you can’t crown the heir until you séance the room.”

In turn, Pusha Ton provided VIBE with some clarity:

I actually wrote my verse [around the time] “D.O.A.” dropped. I just feel like there are a lot of new artists in the game that still have to prove themselves. You hear so much talk about who’s next and who’s up next and who’s the man and so on and so forth. In all fairness, I feel like Jay-Z is still relevant. He’s still the rapper. He’s the crown-holder right now. But, you know, he cosigns plenty of artists all the time, so I just wanted to tell him not to pass the crown too soon because we don’t know enough about these artists yet. We need to do checks on them first and see what they’re all about. Obviously, ghostwriting is a very big thing going on, too. So we gotta see who the man is behind all of these joints if that’s what’s going on.

I AGREE COMPLETELY!!! The man is telling the truth…

  2. The Truth83 says:

didnt really see it as a Jab.

But yea i understand what pusha was saying.

But to get the crown from jay some of these new artists gotta do what jay did back in 97
    “The city is mine”

  3. Zoo-Kwon says:

That line is an obvious Weezy stab since Gillie, Currensy & Drake has ghost written for him

  4. Moose says:

Ain’t even mad at dude. People will claim he’s talking about Drake, J.Cole, or any other newcomer to this game that’s been “anointed” as the next great one. I think there’s a misconception in what the majority feel but I can understand his statement. With that said, Hov is STILL the best, and there will come a time when someone reaches the ears of the listeners in which he has.

  5. Devon says:

if pusha feels that way… then the crown should be going straight over to SLAUGHTERHOUSE BITCH!!!! cuz they aint using any ghostwriters and they spit str8 fire

  6. Nathaniel says:

lol you can’t even say a rappers name in a rhyme these days without the hip hop media calling it “jab” and “takes a shot” or “beef?” ….corny.

he was just talking to the nigga jigga. if anything, it’s a big-up from pusha. but i gotta say, the way he said it in rhyme was doooooope:

“there’s too many spirits on these ghostwritten tunes, so you can’t crown the heir until you séance the room.”

^that shit’s nasty. and i agree.. though i don’t know shit about the ghostwriting, i DO think crowning all these new artists is dumb. they can rap…some of them, but accomplishment wise and longevity wise they have ZERO resume. ZERO. (especially when comparing to cats with classic albums, etc etc and yrs of relevance). whatever though. the culture documentarians are sell-outs. period.

  7. HawthorneFinest says:

THAT WAS FAR FROM A JAB!!!! THAT’S THE MEDIA STIRRIN’ UP SHIT N THE BEEF JUNKIES LOOKIN’ FOR SOMETHIN’ THAT AIN’T THERE!!!! CLIPSE ARE SMART ENOUGH TO NOT TAKE A JAB AT JAY!!!! BUT PUSH T DEEFINITELY SPOKE THE TRUTH ON THAT GHOSTWRITIN’ SHIT!!!!

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

  8. Moose says:

cosign DEVON lmao. And Slaughterhouse can ALL provide dope individual product on the regular.

  9. Arch_Rival says:

^ are u hawthornefinest or mac diesel? Someone just got exposed! will the real mac diesel or hawthornefinest please stand up. Lol!

  10. la_angel_23 says:

    Shots fired…
    Weezy down!

  11. King JuggaNott says:

Pusha T= Underrated. He tore up Til the Casket Drops.

I’m a Dance Hall fan and his verse on “There was a murder” was sick as fuck….Dude Pusha T is going to fuck something up when his solo shit drops. He carried his brother the last CD…sounded like his brother was Preaching the entire CD.

  12. JustSaying says:

Niggas talk at jay-z like they sending a prayer to god saying please don’t forget about me god please say my name god, don’t say theses other guys are great emcees and not mention me god, man look here, fuck what jay’z thinks and who he is passing the crown too. That don’t mean a thing, bruh believe in yourself and your own movement and know your talent and let jay-z crown clown ass niggas who are just like him. Famous by circumstance and talent. Jay-z is not famous for being a real nigga and holding his fam down and being a stand up guy everyone respects. He is talented and he is a good buisness man. he cosigns rappers who fit that mold like drake and little wayne. They ain’t real niggas, they talented rappers. With that being said I don’t listen to jay-z man, he doesn’t make the fucking rules on who is the next best cause he ain’t even the best rapper himself. These rappers are so insecure always looking to jay-z for recognition. Do your thang rappers and let God be your guide not some man from brooklyn.

  13. CantGetRight says:

Mannn Pusha aint gotta explain nothin to these niggas. Either you get it or you dont.

“sounded like his brother was Preaching the entire CD.”

I think that may have something to do with Malice being the ‘older wiser brother.’ Its not hard to tell that Malice is moving past the “money hoes dope” subject matter,at least to me I think he is.On “Life change” He said “money hoes and clothes is Malice past tense” So with the videos he made after their manager got knocked and with the upcoming book he has coming out,I think hes just moving on. I wouldnt say Pusha has been carrying him.

  14. blaqscorpio says:

    ^
Awww, you feel better? It’s good to get ish off your chest, lmao!

  15. Mac Diesel says:

WISH EVERYBODY WOULD SYOP USIN MY MUFUCKIN NAME!!!!!! PINK ASS BITCH PUNK BITCH MOTHUFUCKAS!!!!!! IM FUCKIN MAC DUESIL!!!!!!!! FUCK YOU BITCH ASsSES!!!!!!

    DONT HATE ON MYOPINION!!!!!!!

  16. Nathaniel says:

    ^JustSaying

    …you don’t think you’re taking what pusha said a liiiiittttle too far? i mean, i don’t think it’s that serious. just saying…

    @KingJuggaNott

yea pusha been carrying malice for a while now. the solo album is gonna be a problem. push is maaad slept on

  17. Nathaniel says:

and i wouldn’t bomb on malice for his content. i don’t mind the positivity….let the nigga grow. pusha is just a better emcee in general. that’s what i was talkin about more so.

  18. HawthorneFinest says:

    @fake hawthorne
You wasting your time imitatimg me you fagget…
    Fuck you and mac diesel

  19. lup says:

pusha is dope as fuck but that nigga malice easily destroyed till the casket drops to me

  20. 1 says:

    GOOD POINT PUSHA.

Only if these guys can break into mainstream, they’ll get the respect deserved.

  21. B.Dot says:

    ^
they did. first album went platinum. hell, Charlie Gibson knows em. it’s just the fucking lazy ass fans fault for not buying the albums

  22. illaDeuce says:

the fuck… I fucked with pusha but he needs to stop telling hov about who to co-sign. Last time he was mad that Jay liked wayne.. the fuck. I take this right here as a shot to drizzy, cus he’s the only new artist jay cosigns thats being questioned wether or not he writes his own shit. DRAKE writes his own shit. Anyone from Toronto knows that, so pusha needs to stop talking shit he knows nothing about. Don’t speculate someone has a ghostwriter unless you 100% KNOW, and that goes for whoever he was talking about even if it wasnt drizzy.

  23. J.C. says:

Anyone saying Pusha carries Malice is failing to see the great thing about The Clipse. They show both sides of THE GAME – The rise and the fall. Yeah Pusha is ridic with the quotables but go back and pick up the missed messages but the older brother!

  24. Ty says:

Real tight line…. although I think he probably meant “….. ’til you exorcise the room…” . A seance would bring even more ghosts, no? Real creative way to put it though.

There have only been a couple of dudes Jay has mentioned as being up next. Wayne and Drake are the two that come to mind first of course. Between all the dudes that say they’ve written for Wayne and after Drake’s Khia Shine incident , you may never know who is writing what for whom.

The sad truth is their fans could probably care less. If it came out that Drake had never written one word of his own rhymes, he’d probably lose about 10% of his fan base. Cause look at who they are and why they’re there. Next is a very general term.. Next real lyricist? Next people’s choice? Next most popular? Cause the game done changed and I’m not sure there is a next that can embody everything that the game has become. I’m hoping though.

  25. Nathaniel says:

    @Ty

i think he was trying to conjure up the “ghost” writers, not get the demons out of the rappers. lol

  26. King JuggaNott says:

@ CantGetRight….I think it had a great deal to do with what happened to the Manager. Before that he was the older brother and he was just as reckless with the pen, rapping about the same shit.I’m not saying that it was bad, but you could notice it…and really like Nathaniel was saying….he has really been carrying him when it comes to skill level. IMO…

They are a nice group..I can understand the “Solo” move…because Malice is still nice, but Pusha is in the same type situation that Wayne was in when he was rocking with Juve and BG. Those are still some nice artist…but they are no where near where Wayne can take it. Same with Pusha and Malice. MY Opinion though.

  27. JustSaying says:

@ nathaniel, naw i’m not taking it too far, he should not care about who jay thinks is the best and do his own thing, don’t wait on the next man to validate you. why is he even concerned about what jay-z is doing, and who he is passing the crown to. Do you and fuck the next man is all I’m saying, justsaying

  28. flawda says:

    @ Justsaying

I like the fact that you totally ignore the fact that he cosigned Beanie Sigel, Cole, etc, but that would only put holes in your stupid ass argument wouldn’t it. lol

  29. JustSaying says:

@ flawda look man, I’m not going to go back and forth about who jay-z cosigned All i’m saying is rappers need to do their own thing and stop worrying about what jay-z is doing or who he is cosigning. Rappers need some reassurance and self confidence and they are looking to jay-z for it because he is a big dog in the game but they need to find that confidence and reassurance from themselves and their fans, not jay-z. stop giving jay-z the power to make you feel like your not as good as you are. rappers give him that power when they show how everything he does or says affects them enough to mention jay-z’s name in a song trying to get their respect from jay-z for some reason. I don’t get it. I don’t worship man or look to another man for anything. You do what you do and say what you say and I will do the same. Every man is a king in his own right. Just sprinkling self confidence on the world today, sorry if it bothers any of you.

  30. will says:

so it actually was a jab at drake and wayne LOL becuz The whole Drake Best I Ever had thing where he didnt even know Kia Shine was getting money and plagues off f teh song if you wrote the song you should know who is getting what that was kind of suspect t me that Kia shine was getting 25% of that song profits and Drake didnt know about it

and wayne gets called out on ghostwriting from Gillie To Stacc Bundles to Drake Now

but to be honest i dont thinc drake is writing his shit becuz his freestyles are terrible and the one hot one he did was off his cellphone and A nIgga gets 25% of a song you wrote and you dont even know about it IDK sound weird to me 25% is a big Cut and he getting awards and shit for the song and the fact Drake didnt know and disclaimed all that shit was weird

  31. King JuggaNott says:

    @will

Do you know the real story behind how Kia Shine is getting the credit for it? It’s the melody, not that he WROTE the lyrics. He used the melody of this

It ain’t like he wrote the song. LOL…Wayne got splits on the song too.

  32. koa29 says:

“Wayne’s scorchin, if he keep goin, pass the torch to em” – Jay off “A Star Is Born”

pretty sure Pusha has been takin some shots at Weezy lately…this being one of em..

  33. koa29 says:

    @King JuggaNott

Nah, Kia produced that track…and Drake used one of wayne’s lyrics off of there. So really, Kia shouldn’t get credit at all….he’s just a dumb nigga

  34. King JuggaNott says:

    @ Koa29
I suppose he did produce the track, but somehow he must have had some kind of writers credit on it too bruh. Otherwise he wouldn’t have got the credit. He must have told Wayne how he thought he should ride the beat, Wayne used that melody…and that’s all she wrote. It could be what you’re saying though. Who knows…My point was that he didn’t actually write the song for Drake.

  35. majest says:

i been said this…theres mad ghostwriting going on.

  36. JIGGA NOT says:

ummm….BULLSHIT. PUSHA, JUST TELL EM THE TRUTH THAT JAY-Z AIN’T THE KING. THE REAL KING IS THE “ARTIST OF THE DECADE.” AND REMEMBER JIGGA SAID THIS,”MEN LIE, WOMEN LIE, NUMBERS DON’T.” HEY HOVA, GIVE IT UP FOR EMINEM, ACTUALLY, “CLAP FOR EM”

  37. Nipsyfire says:

@ Jigga Not Stop Dickridin Em Brilliant But Damn Everyone On his nuts hard On Rapradar and rapbasement..But Em As A Buisness Man Shit Compared To Jigga..Em as a labe manager shit to he had stat quo, bobby creekwater and has Stil got cashis and none of them were pushed strong anuff

Pusha T Ok We Seen The Best Off Him on ‘Til The Casket Drops’ …he is mad underrated though to see niggas like souulja boy,Drake,Flo Rida get pushed mad hard in hip hop it’d be great to see people like Pusha T,J Cole,Cashis Get Pushed Alot More..

  38. Fredro says:

em is dope but I feel he is living on past success…..who can honestly em’s last album was dope?……Jay-Z been in this rap game so damn long and still makes anthems I’m from the south and respect all artist cuz they puttin shit on wax I wouldnt even think of….but lets be real

  39. MikeNUFC says:

Christ, any topic can turn into an Eminem deabte on here? Whats the point of arguing whos the best?

Its all subjective. You can have a favourite but to keep going ‘X”, “Y” and “Z” are the best is pointless.

  40. Ty says:

    @ Nathaniel

LOL I feel you . I inferred from the rest of the rhyme that he was trying to get rid of the “ghosts” so a real king could be crowned in the “ghosts” absence. That’s just how I saw it. Your view could be the more accurate though…. too bad nobody asked him LOL

  41. ???? still best rite now!! says:

Why these bummy niggas ( Clipse) still firing shots at Wayne?

This the 2nd or 3rd time dey dun addressed Jay about saying wayne is the “heir.”

You mad???? then sell some damn records losers

  42. Mac Diesel says:

im a homo deep down. Thats y i got n opinon on Everythin’!

  43. Mac Diesel says:

    DON’T HATE ON MY OPINNION!!!!!!1

  44. meTHATSwho says:

Clipse are looking for attention. They are one dimensional. only rap about crack and coke. Too bad they r broke! I am from VA these guys are 5’2 and never been known for slangin that shit… They are just mad they only sold 38K albums compared to weezys 3 M

  45. Cory says:

yeah but he just rhymed “room” with “room” #cmonson

  46. IMbase says:

i dont understand y niggas call the clipse broke when the makin money hand over fist w/ play cloths…..and ur fav rapper probably rockin that shit..
