I mostly agree, but it’s just like… I don’t know, like some others have already said, it’s like Eminem lost that certain secret ingredient that some people have. You know, the movie star who just has stage presence, the girl who catches everyone’s attention not because she’s super hot or anything but because she gives off that sort of vibe…whatever.
Eminem had a spark in his early days, even on Encore, and ever since he came back it’s like he lost it. His stage performances aren’t as captivating, his lyrics, though still good, lack that cohesiveness they once had, and if not that, they’re just not as attention-grabbing. Again, it’s hard to pin point it. I’m still a hgue fan, and I want Recovery, but both this and Not Afraid are forgettable, in my opinion.
And to whoever said the majority of tracks on MMLP lacked substance…those songs were satire. They had plenty of substance. They revealed the hypocrisy of the exact society Eminem had been attacked by after SSLP. Who Knew, Kill You, Criminal, were all critical shots at critics. They were what convinced a lot of people (even me) that Eminem wasn’t just talented, but fucking genius. Then Relapse came out and it was like “Wait…did he even know what the hell he was DOING on MMLP? Was that shit a FLUKE!?”

There are VERY few Eminem songs I don’t like, I’m talking around four or five songs, but this is one of them. Don’t get me wrong, he brought the lyrics, the punchlines, the aggression, but this wasn’t what I was expecting.
Funnily enough I was excited to hear Eminem with Pink, and not because I like Pink, but because he would be working with someone from left field. And really, what did Pink contribute to this song? Better yet, what is this song even about? The punchlines show he is still an insane lyricist, but I want to hear something with a more cohesive message (even if that message isn’t all that important). He doesn’t need to be rapping about world hunger or politics or even poor education to say something, just so long as he SAYS something though.
But the fact is, he ISN’T saying anything on this song. It’s just him going off while Pink sings “I won’t back down”…back down from what? That’s why Not Afraid was a better song. Because it has a point, he feels there are forces (real or otherwise) that are working towards his failure as an artist. Not this, I can’t even extrapolate what the fuck a message out of this song could be, and that’s why it fails in my opinion.
It fails because this song means nothing, just like the mass of synthesized garbage the radio plays en mass from Lady Gaga to Ke$ha. Take note that I’m not saying it fails because of his lyrics or punchlines, he certainly brings those (as usual…), but he fails because this song has no point. None.
And why does a song need a point? Well, not all songs do. This song is great for showing that Eminem hasn’t gone “soft” (what a stupid thought) and still has it lyrically. But to me that’s a waste. Drake needs to be doing that because he doesn’t have the resources Eminem does, Em has already proved himself. So why waste a track on an album where people are expecting you to bring something special with a song that is only confirming what we already know…you can go balls out with lyrics and punchlines WHEN YOU WANT TO. We already knew that, thank you for wasting my time.

Why are ppl so stuck in the past…waaaa go back to the MMLP of Eminem Show waaaaa…do you want him to put out eminem show/MMLP part two w/ hit tracks such as “I’m sorry father”, “Say goodbye to Detroit”, “Stan’s Brother”, “The Way I Was”, and “Drug Song”… Nah if he did that he would be a stagnant act that couldnt grow as an artist.
I am fine if you dont appreciate this because it lacks any deep story feel, but thats what not afraid was. An album is supposed to show different areas of strengths, its supposed to touch different emotions…this is on the opposite spectrum of “Not Afraid” this is some pure spitting magic. Sure the content is thin, but the wordplay and metaphors are at an all time high, and so is the confidence. This is a pump you up, early 90s, spitting anthem.
But dont fret I am sure there will be something for everyone one this album, and with these two singles eminem showed his versatility on the record.

Dude seriously you need to go back and listen to Til I Collapse, White America, The Way I Am, etc. He’s spittin so hard on Til I collapse, when he says “Ho-ac” He sounds like he gonna hack up a big one! But remember Em history in this Biz isn’t like most artist’s, He wasn’t as young as most artists are, when they start out in this. when Dre signed Em he was like 28. Then he disappeared for 4/5 yrs. The great thing about Eminem is that he always takes chances with his rap music and he isnt afraid to reach out to pop artists like Dido to collaborate often creating interesting rap songs in the process. I love all Eminens music and Eminems music videos but I am a big fan of Rap & Hip hop music videos in general and i just love his “Love The Way You Lie” rap music video with Rihanna its so cool.
