Bun B Reacts To Receiving 5 Mics
Yesterday, The Source announced that Bun B’s Trill O.G. was crowned with their classic 5 mic rating. Below, he issued a statement in light of the honor. Speech!
When I started rapping, the highest honor a real MC could aspire to was the coveted 5 mics from Source Magazine. It was only given to the best of the best in hip hop, the cream of the crop so to speak. Those that received the honor were sometimes but not always contested, but what WAS always contested were those that DIDN’t receive the honor. If you’ve ever argued about your favorite MC on a corner, in a barbershop or on the comment section of a blog, then you know what I’m talking about.
For every album labeled a classic, there are dozens of others that people feel deserve the honor. So I realize that people now feel they have to place my album next to others that they feel were more impactful, and argue their case. With social networking being as prevalent as it is in our society, these arguments now take place in a very public arena, which in order to be heard, you often have to be very opinionated and abrasive to stand out. So people, while having no personal hate or malice towards me, will make very loud arguments about The Source’s decision, and the loudest ones will probably get the most attention.
Having been in the music industry almost 20 years, I have learned to receive my accolades with honor and respect, and hold my head high when the hate rains down. I love hip hop just as much or even more than the next person, so I understand the passion behind the argument. At the end of the day, we all want this thing we love to be as real and pure as the day we fell in love with it.
Having said all this, it is with great honor and admiration that I humbly accept this esteemed declaration from the Source Magazine and it’s staff for my album Trill OG, and for those that feel they need to shit on me to argue for another artist or album, don’t worry. The Trill OG can take it! UGK for life!

Haven’t heard the Trill OG or The Roots but Em nor Big Boi deserve 5 Mics. Big Boi was solid, Em lyrical content was the best I heard in awhile but his production and some of his hooks killed the album for me.

Yeah,5 mics doesnt mean as much as it did 10 yrs ago but I just dont understand how The Source can give Trill OG 5 mics and only give Trill,(Bun’s 1st solo record) which is an overall better cd,only 4 mics? Its some confused mofos up at that office. Thats why the rating to me seems more like an Lifetime achievement award more than anything else because 5 yrs ago when that album dropped,Bun wasnt getting as much recognition as he is now and they viewed him just as a normal rapper.

1. Stayin power… something that transends its time and place.. a classic is some shit I could pick up 10yrs from now and pop it in and it was still feel fresh nigga
2. CONTENT.. a classic album is like a movie from track 1 on.. it takes you on a journey.. and includes some deeper emotions bein discussed.. not just bein trill and that bullshit
3. LYRICS.. Bun.. already takes a loss on that cuz the nigga just ain’t got it in him.. the nigga don’t make well written songs he just makes club music for the SOUTH.. which we all know it don’t take much thought to do..
4. Sales can or can’t be included.. Don’t think there’s been a album this year I would call classic, recovery comes closest.
It all depends on the definition though if you count a album one will listen to in the years to come on a regular basis a classic then there’s a few, recovery, the good sun, stimulus package and a few others.

There was a time when you saw an album get 5 mics or even 4.5 mics, you rushed to the record store and bought it. Nowadays, I really haven’t paid any attention to The Source. In fact, I haven’t read their magazine in over a decade. So any rating they provide doesn’t mean much to me.
My criteria for a “5 mic album” is simple. The album has to have superior lyrical content and the production has to be on point. Also I have to listen from the intro all the way to the outro without fast forwarding (Example: Illmatic, 36 Chambers, Only Built For Cuban Linx (Purple Tape), etc.).
I’m originally from Houston, TX and I grew up listening to UGK / Bun B. So the moment I heard that it got 5 mics, I had know choice but to listen to the album.. After just 1 listen, I will have to say it’s about a 4.. In my opinion it’s not a classic because it’s not his best work and I strongely believe that anything with a Gucci Mane feature, should not get 5 mics. Now, it’s only 1 listen, so my rating is subject to change within a week or so.
There were a couple of instances where I just had to fast forward to the next song. But it was cool to hear Tupac, Pimp C, Twista (who I haven’t heard in a minute), and a DJ Premier track.
Sidenote: I haven’t heard Em and Big Boi’s album all the way through, however, I did hear “How I Got Over” by The Roots and it’s a 4.5.

As you can see Jayz laid the blueprint for Em to recover cuz relapse was said to be garbage of 2009 of course making BP3 the best hip hop album of 09. I remember traveling through 3 cities in LA to get Climatic just because the Source gave it 5 nice. I remember when BeNd Nubian got 5 move first time out and everybody followed because of the Source. I can go on for a long time, but truth is when Lil Kim got it for Naked Truth, all credibility went out the window. They’ve had chances to redeem with albums after, like Kanye, but they haven’t, which is where all this hate is coming from. I really like the album and understand the rating even if I don’t agree, but how can a generation of 50 Cent lovers and master appreciate an true to .life album that’s not.marketed to love? Congrats Bun and keep up the good work at such a rare age in Hip Hop.
