DAMN!!! C’mon man, why don’t you say she performed in Tanzania. Africa is not a country or city.. You are not obligated to perpetuate that bs colonial ignorance..smh

  2. hip hop since 78 says:

oh shit! im from tanzania! i just came back from there as well

  3. mdot says:

Well since every border of african countries was divided up by white pple witout regard to cultural significance…so yes he performed in tanzania..and the pple in that country as jus as important as the next…but sayn africa as a whole goes against segmented colonial borders…jus a thought

  4. ironic says:

@mdot – WOW!!!!! really?? that’s some entertaining logical gymnastics, there! so, perpetuate colonial discourse as an anti-colonial tactic? fight AIDS with cancer? mdot, EVERY single geographical border is the product of history and a social/cultural construction… let’s look at your logic..so why differentiate between east coast, down south, west coast and other regions in terms of music, sport, linguistic differences, etc, because white people stole first nations lands in the US? even without ‘white people’ interference, differences do exist…stop giving them so much props/power (even if unintentional). your ‘just a thought’ is not a well thought out thought, just a thought

  5. ironic says:

ps @ mdot – in case you didn’t know, Lil Kim is not a HE, but a SHE

  6. iFortknox says:

1st I wanna shout out YN for the post then address the lil-n-stupid-rant of Africa being a Continent not a country. I know that cuz i’m African, living in Africa, Kenya to be precise. So I cant be told nothing about Africa cuz thats me, thats my Identity.
The reason I put Africa n not Tanzania was cuz of Google Analytics, I wanted damn traffic for my youtube page. Unless you dumb n dont understand what i’m talking about then continue ranting Colonial BS as I get what I wanted. Hip Hop is Universal! Thats all I care about.
Shouts to rap radar. Lets keep rocking.
    Fort Knox

  7. ironic says:

@ iFortknox – We could do the ‘from Africa back and forth’ all day, because I, too, am from Africa. Nothing about being from or living in Africa, automatically, excuses reinforcing a Eurocentric monolithic versions of Africa (regardless if you know YOUR identity). In fact, it makes it a million times worst. It means you know better but chose to perpetuate ignorant crap just to get traffic and for strategic positioning within the hip hop or popular cultural blogosphere? Your hip hop is universal statement makes NO sense, because every nook and cranny of this globe where hip hop exists, still (tries to) bring something locally authentic to how hip hop is perceived and practiced. I am happy for you that you’ve gotten a posting here, but please, try to do it with integrity and try not to (willingly) do the work of those who kept a whole continent in some curioshop status. Surely, you could have written “Lil Kim performs in Tanzania, Africa’.. Don’t let your ego get in the way of accepting constructive criticism that would allow you to do work that would not be at the expense of representing a whole continent in the same way right wing white supremacists do. Shame on you!

  8. iFortknox says:

Yo! You can write whatever man, it never strips me off my BEAUTIFUL AFRICAN IDENTITY. Keep bitching sucker. I dont think you stand for any relevance here. Lil Kim rocked Dar, Tanzania, Eastside of Africa. We AFRICANS Enjoyed that shit n its legendary man. Thats the most important thing. There were people(check the video) and that shows Hip Hop is universal son. Kill yourself n leave me the fuck alone. Fake-ass-crab. I’m a student of Hip Hop, I’m African, thats my Identity, it ain my fault Africa was colonized! I got nothing to do with that. Black is the color my brother. Keep shouting Africa like you got Identity issues, i’m living it n its beautiful.
    Fort Knox!!

  9. iFortknox says:

Let Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkuruma, Oginga Odinga, Nyerere tell me i’m less African but not a fake ass sucker who got to speak loads of bullshit online to prove a point. *in my pan-african mood*
I love you Queen B, come rock Nairobi too. Aha!
    Fort Knox!

  10. ironic says:

@ iFortknox – Your ego is in defence mode. I get that. This is a public forum and you’re called out. I can’t hate on that. However, when you have a moment alone and feeling human, process what was pointed out. The intention wasn’t to diss you and leave it there. I want you to succeed, just do it in an ethical way. This is a great learning moment, don’t waste it!

  11. mdot says:

The pan africanist identity that fort knox was talkn bout was the point I’m tryn to make..if we all together then WE all together…not that its not cool to be proud of where u from but the part isn’t greater than the whole…now how it even went this far off a lil kim post is interesting too..but if all u can identify wit is nationalistic borders (borders that weren’t drawn by you) then u can’t trace urself past that or part of something bigger…as far as hip hop..u obviously by

  12. mdot says:

The sound of the response tend to buy into how corporate media likes to dissect things not jus hip hop..hip hop is hip hop whether its from from this place or that..at the end of the day it all adds to it and is apart of the culture..that’s y face mob wasn’t feeln those vh1 hip hop south honors

  13. iFortknox says:

Fuck you man. You can’t tell me shit about learning. Go check the first video n see what I wrote.
Yeah I got an ego, jus like any other living human being so don’t be telling me shit about how i’m suppose to do my thing. I’m doing me n its morally right that you keep ya’self busy with something worth your time.
You knw why you are a fake? Illiteracy in Africa(that you claim to love) is near 75%, you online trying to question my ethics (i’m literate) instead of doing shit that gone elevate ya continent. You are screwed son of bitch who needs to find a hobby somehow, someway.
    Don’t teach me anything.
    I’M BLESSED TO BE ME!
    Peace!
    Fort Knox!

  14. mdot says:

And ironic in case you didn’t know its spelled “defense ” jus in case u didn’t see that from up on your high horse..semicolon closed parenthesis homie

  15. ironic says:

@ iFortknox – you are ‘literate’ so you can’t be called out? HAHAHAA. btw, if you only knew what i am doing for my continent, but that’s not for here…enjoy and be blessed to be you

@ mdot – lemme change my tone, because, admittedly, that ‘just a thought’ statement of mine earlier, wasn’t called for. i want to make it perfectly clear, me challenging ifortknox and rapradar for just saying Africa, is not me being nationalistic (in the geographical/colonial sense). I absolutely agree that these borders are a result of the Berlin Conference and regional interwars (some colonial backed, others not). That wasn’t my point, at all. To challenge racist representations of Africa as this monolithic entity isn’t the opposite of being anti-colonial. To specify that cultural groups like Zulu, Xhosa or Venda exist and have overlaps and differences in the way these groups do things, does not mean we are not acknowledging the cultural glue that also connect them to other collectives (that stretches beyond the African continent). embracing pan africanism is not antithetical to being aware that the cultural, social and political realities of, say, egypt, is not the same as, say, zimbabwe (even tho both were occupied by the british). I don’t need you remind you of how homogenous representations of folks are used as ideological tools to marginalise others. This ‘AFRICA’ as a whole, without any difference, is indicative of typical ignorant and problematic narratives that

If we go by your argument, why call it Africa, when, depending on the version of history you choose, the name wasn’t even given by an African? or Why confine it to the geographical split that ‘the white man’ placed on maps? Why not include what is called Asia minor? Damn, African music and people have traveled all the way to India during a time when Europeans were freezing in caves. We could go on and on.

I understand your point re the hip hop honours (notice the “u”) event, but i think the frustration you mention has to do with many factors, ranging from tokenism to everyday industry politics. Their beef, i would argue, is not that they do no recognise (notice the ‘s’) that the South has numerous sounds and hip hop styles (from 2 Live Crew to Jay Electronica to Luda, and the list goes on) that are relatively distinct from other regions (and even within their own region as well).

oh and re the defence/defense statement, go here:

    http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwesl/egw/jones/differences.htm

i wasn’t schooled in the US, my schooling was in Africa (based on the British system, hence the spelling). jab alert:
Lil Kim is still not a HE 😉 i kid, i know it was an innocent mistake..but yah, i don’t consider my passion around this as me being on a high horse..i just know that problematic representations have all kinds of consequences…

  16. mdot says:

I understand the monolithic representation of not jus those of us residing on the continent but Black pple as a whole…of course we are as diverse as our shades no matter where history has caused us to reside..were the histories of ancient egypt and say mali different of course yes..but they both are part of an overall african history…but to get to all this for someone sayn that lil kim performed on the continent of africa which she very well did (while also stating the specific country) is a bit much..if ur so deep that u can’t even get over the name africa being used and get all riled up then what real world objective to u wish to accomplish..if that’s the case then y not regect the islamic names of african countries…as far the music its the same yea outkast is unique from snoop who is unique from nas..and they all bring they point of view but at the end of the day all them call themselves hip hop..that’s all I’m tryn to say..parts are important…but they can’t help but be part of a whole..did lil kim perform in africa yes..did she perform in tanzania yes…wat really else is there to say

  17. ironic says:

this is going nowhere…i wish you a good rest of the day

  18. Miss Peaches says:

    well damn….that was good!

HIP HOP as the catalyst for socio-political discourse…..I’m loving it!

  19. ironic says:

  20. Belize says:
