idk i try to be positive and i actually like both these artists despite their uninspired pop aspirations.
especially will.i.am who is literally a genius. ppl probably don’t think about the way this guy has made commercial music of the most blatant (and successful globally across demographics) kind perhaps ever. he makes songs that are ad jingles, PR campaigns for politicians, whatever. the songs aren’t just songs; they’re vehicles for messages. he is basically the future of music in a lot of ways. he goes to silicon valley and meets with heads of google and shit. they discuss the future of technology. ha.
but jesus. on another level this is crap. plain old crap. just a shitty song and an example ppl outside of hip-hop use to dismiss us as a valid culture or art form requiring talent or originality. ’cause the emphasis is too much on costumes and gimmickry (“oh i have characters i play and one is a gay man named roman”). but we’re all so success-obsessed that whatever tops the charts we flock to, imitate, blog about, and obsess over. who cares about what it does to the culture or our community. oh so he raps about selling crack to black people? who cares? he’s rich stop hating. oh it’s vapid. who cares? i just wanna forget my problems and party. and so on. there’s gotta be other ways to define “success”. just not around here.
