Understand Rap: Explanations Of Confusing Rap Lyrics

This came through in the mail today and caught my interest. Similar to Jay-Z’s upcoming book, Decoded, Understand Rap provides explanations to some of the game’s most iconic quotables. The book drops today and is also available on Amazon. Peep an excerpt below.

Lyric: “I was strapped wit’ gats when you were cuddled wit’ cabbage patch.”
Lyric From Song “Forgot About Dre”
On Album 2001
By Artist Dr. Dre
Explanation: When you were still a child and had no concerns other than playing with dolls in the comfort and safety of your home, I was carrying guns around in my dangerous neighborhood.

Lyric “I ain’t pass the bar, but I know a little bit”
Lyric From Song “99 Problems”
On Album The Black Album
By Artist Jay-Z
Explanation: Although I haven’t educated myself concerning the matters necessary to complete the examination lawyers take to be able to practice law, I have enough knowledge to be a very successful rapper and entrepreneur and to have sustained a level of wealth greater than many lawyers.

  18. jeeeeeezzer says:

gucci best lyricist in tha game… Juss deal wid it bitches…

  19. Cudder says:

    @MacDIESEL

Im sayin though, Ghostface would be perfect fit for a verse On Ye’s Devil In A New Dress

especially since it aint sound finished he would body that track. But the song is still great how it is

  20. toad3527 says:

those lyrics were far from confusing, what about this one ” till we all got triangles on our wall” jay-z. what was he talking about?

  21. Shawn says:

“I don’t rhyme for the sake of riddling”

    Chuck D

Translation: My goal isnt to purposefully confuse you. So I mean what I say.

I’m up in the air on this one.. Jay couldve left this alone.

    Cosign mac on Ghostface.. LMAO

  22. Young Mo Fo says:

    Cosign @ ScoobieDoesIt
Its obvious what Jay-Z meant. Seems like their gonna exaggerate a lot of the meanings.

  23. RoeLuv says:

those lyrics were far from confusing, what about this one ” till we all got triangles on our wall” jay-z. what was he talking about?

Triangles = platinum records Billboard uses that symbol for one million sold

  24. toad3527 says:

    thanks foreluv

  25. Nathaniel says:

    @mac DIESEL

damn i never knew what the fuck ghost meant by that on Stroke of Death… (and a shit load of other phrases on that album, lol)

Mighty Healthy was my shit. anything coming out of the clan from 95 – 2001 (and all of ghost’s subsequent releases) deserves it’s own book. that wu-tang manual helps, but them niggas…

they rhyme in fucking cryptic codes. but ALL that shit makes sense. crazy

  26. pissed says:

Damn those lines wer confusing to people? Those lines are pretty clear to me. This book is weak.

  27. Brodie says:

Hope they have some Camp Lo in there. I swear I don’t know what they’re talking about sometimes, it just sounds fly

  28. Mike B says:

    Exactly@ android…
“But i know a little bit” literally means that he knows enough about the law that they cant search his shit….not that he knows enough to be a sucessful rapper and become wealthy…
I’ve read funny rap lyrics decyphered b4….but this dont seem like it….with the excerpt atleast. It’s just dumb.

  29. Kid says:

This book is GREAT for lupe songs

  30. DIGGSY!!! says:

i would only read this to see how many lyrics and explanations they fucked up.

  31. Enig Mue says:

seems more fitting for a tumblr site.

  32. H84NOREASON says:

Ghostface Lyrics are like another language to me sometimes. I like “All I got is U” tho.

This book sounds like it’s a waste of paper, but I can’t knock nobody hustle.

  33. mdot says:

These explanations must be written for pple who have no idea what hip hop music is…cause these webster definitions are beyond corny..ill get decoded thanks

  34. Android says:

They need to seriously do lupe’s dumb it down verses. He’s saying something……. But what?!

  35. Capri says:

he fucked up on da last one, he was close though
jay wuz saying that he didnt go to school to be a lawyer n know every law
but it iz to his knowledge that his stuff can’t be search cuz itz illegal

  36. hell naw says:

these types of books are so racist and patronizing. super corny.

  37. Belize says:

No shit! @ the first one!
Anyone who can interperate metaphors and shit like that can understand rap. Simple as that.
I can’t name ANYONE who would find a book like this worth it.
It sounds interesting, and it may’ve been a good idea while author was thinkin bout it, but really…

  38. toad3527 says:

why did jay-z “you was doing 55 in a 54”? last time i checked they did not have speed limits set at 54.

  39. MiloD says:

@toad3527 he was trying to express that the cop was being an asswhole cops dont pull you over unless you 10%+ the speed limit

  40. toad3527 says:

oh, thanks miloD. man that cop really was an a**hole

  41. Niyemortal says:

    cosign @mac

Ghostface and Rae need a book all to themselves. those niggas rap chinese riddles and shit hahaha

  42. Willie_mcfly22 says:

Haha! This book is like a pair of bootleg Jordans…an effin joke!!

  43. Smalls1 says:

Just visit rapgenius.com! Don’t buy this lame ass book

  44. toad3527 says:

i would rock some bootleg jordans

  45. H84NOREASON says:

I would prefer a book of just Twista, Bone Thugs & Harmony, E-40, Mystikal, and Big Pun lyrics. No explanations needed. I would just want to read what they be talkin’ bout. Them niggaz is like reggae music. Everytime I hear a reggae song I’ve heard before I pick up a new line in it. Everything wasn’t meant to be simple tho.

Lupe be losin’ me sometimes, but when he say some shit I understand it be hot as hell tho.

  46. K GRIZZLY says:

the only lyrics i got problem with is some wu tang mostly raekwon…some bars aint that hard to understand.

  47. damn says:

this must just be a aid for white ppl who dont know whatsup… rhymes aint that hard to figure out just gotta listen

  48. SOOPAFRESH says:

  50. CEESTAX says:

AND YALL CUMSTAINS STILL DONT KNOW WHAT THE FUCK U TALKIN ABOUT!!! STOP TAKIN SHIT OUT OF CONTEXT…. JAY’ S LINE IS PRETTY BASIC HE IS NOT A LAWYER BUT SELF EDUCATED ENOUGH TO KNOW THE BASIC PARAMETERS OF THE LAW LIKE U CANT SEARCH SOMEONES VEHICLE WITHOUT CONSENT OF THE DRIVER IF U DONT HAVE A WARRANT… AND U COCKSUCKAZ R PRETTY FUCKIN STOOOOOPID!!!!!!!

  51. KnawledgeBorn says:

the two most non-cryptic lyrics in the past decade lol

    they stay eating off rap

i was hoping one day someone would fully break down “Dumb It Down” by Lupe i get some of the song but the other parts are pure lyrical genius which requires talent this shit is silly

  52. DRich says:

White people love sh!t like this, they think it’s hilarious. Black people listen to rap and understand what’s being said so it’s highly unnecessary for us. I honestly think it’s supposed to be a gag book. Like English 50 cent on twitter.

  53. […] At the height of Hip Hop’s “Golden Age” I would have probably been offended by such a book but as the game has evolved and ice grilled southern rappers have infiltrated with individualized rap dialects such a tool isn’t such an offensive idea.  HOWEVER! Isn’t that part of the aura and mystique of Hip Hop?  Here’s a little sneak peak courtesy of Rap Radar. […]

  54. […] le sens. Understand Rap: Explanations Of Confusing Rap Lyrics est disponible sur Amazon. Merci à YN pour […]

  55. Samir says:

Honestly most of u are retarded. This book wasn’t ACTUALLY made for people to look to as a reference. This book is meant for humor purposes. If u can’t understand the humor in this u probably just some white kid who thinks they know everything there is to kno about hip hop.

  56. This can be generally an awesome weblog website. I have been again when or two times more than the previous days.

  57. Marble says:

Helpful information. Lucky me I discovered your site accidentally, and I am surprised why this accident did not happened earlier! I bookmarked it.
