It’s only 48 hours into the New Year, but yours truly along with DJ Superstar, Kraze (All Access), Big Kap and others debate on who will be the hottest MC of 2011. Aside from Lil Wayne, this list definitely could use some tweaking. Wiz at number 10? Come on son.

#10) RICK ROSS- I dont see Ross dropping another album in 2011, but Im sure hell have a few listenable mixtapes. Dudes not my style but theres a pretty big niche market for those “bawse” club tracks, and like it or not hes the best at that right now. I ranked him 10, tho, cuz Im sure with Lil Wayne out of jail again, Birdman is gonna be providing Ross a little bit of competition.
#9) B.o.B.- Dude made a huge impact with his debut this year, and hes even still got a few singles on the itunes charts left over from this spring. Plus No Genre was pretty good. I dont think dudes really gonna put out a ton of new material, tho, mostly cuz Ive seen his live show and it kicks ass, so I can only assume hell be touring for a while at least.
#8) WIZ KHALIFA- Dropping the debut, and coming off his first nationwide tour, I think Wiz is set up to be basically this years B.o.B. Hell get old relatively soon, but I think 2011 is gonna be a good year for Wiz.
#7) J. COLE- Still relatively underground, compared to the rest of the list, but with the debut dropping and Roc Nation shaping up the way it is, I feel like theres a ton of people that know J. Cole but dont think anybody else does. Thats a huge recipe for success once he starts to blow; everybody likes to be the first one to find the new trend, the new sound, the next “big thing”. Id be very surprised if theres no J. Cole feature on “Watch the Throne”; the marketing just makes too much sense.
#6) NICKI MINAJ- I cant stand her. I mean literally, its to the point where I cut off good songs (Monster, Up All Night) when she comes on cuz I find her so damn annoying. Having said that, shes got the formula (tits+ass+almost passable skill), and shes the only particularly relevent female rapper at the moment (in terms of sales at least), so shes gonna keep getting hella features from other rappers that have also picked up on the trend. The first half of 2011 should be a good one for her.
#5) DRAKE- If he drops the second album. If not, hell get some features on the Carter 4, and probably another tour, but I wouldnt expect a big jump in popularity. I could see an acting gig somewhere in there too. Still the hook-man of hip hop tho.
#4) LUPE FIASCO- I know, dudes all but irrelevant at the moment. But a new Lupe album always shakes the industry up a bit; cuz the guy doesnt make the same kind of music as everybody else, almost like Kanye. Not to mention the timing is great; hes got enough old fans that are starving for a new album, but hes got a whole new audience now to attract again (high school/college promotion). Once the Lupe train gets moving for the March album drop, theres really only 3 people (2 releases) that I can see fuckin with his buzz.
#3) JAY-Z- Watch the Thone, plus the J. Cole album, and I wouldnt be surprised if Jay took a page from Kanye’s book and used Cole and Electronica to help promote a 4th quarter release of some kind. This was a relatively slow year for Jay, and he usually doesnt do too many of those in a row.
#2) LIL WAYNE- Between the prison release, the Carter 4, and his tendency to release absolutely everything he ever records, Im expecting to see a hell of a lot of Lil Wayne coming up this year. Theres 2 reasons I couldnt rank him #1 tho; first of all, even tho Wayne was locked up, this was definitely a YM year, and Drake and Nicki kinda sound exactly like Lil Wayne. Theres a lot of potential there for people to start looking for something else before even getting back to the original. The other reason I cant put him first is because I honestly havent liked much of his post-prison music. I mean, Carter 3 was disappointing, and 6’7′ would have still been the worst song on there, imo. One way or another, tho, Waynes gonna have a big year.
#1) KANYE WEST- Ok, now everybodys looking at G.O.O.D. Music. Crazy album? Check. Tons of new music? Check. Introduction to the roster? Check. Now, one of 2 things will happen. Ye will either continue with his media blitz, put out “Watch the Throne”, then tour, probably with G.O.O.D. for the remainder of the year. Or he will recognize the opportunity he just created, and promote the artists that he just showed off on G.O.O.D. Fridays. Id guess he chooses he latter, because hes working with Jay as it is, and Jays got the business sense to see it, even if Kanyes ego tells him to fuck em all. Plus, those 2 rosters working together for cross-promotion? No real artist would be able to turn down the opportunity to put Mos Def, Common, Jay Electronica, J. Cole, Jay Z and Kanye West in the same room.

Im not a stan but i mean come on, we all know with all the leaks coming out a Recovery revamp will come out just like he did with relapse refill. Its hard to predict who is going to be hot when we dont know for sure if anyone is going out with an album in 2011 or what tapes or online stuff they hit the streets with.
If I had to guess on MCs (so excluding Dre) I guess I go with:
Jay-Z- Watch The Throne will have him on Pete Rock and Q-Tip. Here’s Jay’s chance to get real Hip Hop with it

Jay Electronica- It depends. I feel like we wont see an album from him and hes not the type to flood the web with mixtapes.

Wiz Khalifa- Black and Yellow has taken off, lets see what the album do.

Nas- I know the masses may not check for him. But with a petition for Lost Tapes 2 and talk of anyone from Kanye to RZA to Pete Rock to Alex da Kid producing for his next album, Im curious to see if Nas wants to take the streets back like he claimed. He’s had a messy divorce and people havent counted him out this much since Stillmatic. Will a hungry album plus Lost Tapes 2 have people feeling like its 2002?
Raekwon- He got a lot heat back in the streets with Only Built for Cuban Linx 2. If he goes into Shoalin vs the Wu-Tang with the same mentality who’s to say he has sustained cred like Ghost did?
Saigon- I know people dont check for him like they did. But with his album finally coming out it could remind people why he had so much promise and give him a second wind.
Young Jeezy- He has to release the album at some point right? Is he still hot in the streets and got that fanbase? If TM103 comes out we may know
The Game- Are people still checking for RED? Well look he has delivered imo in the past (Doctor’s Advocate was no Documentary but was pretty impressive) if he can finally organize that album with all the promise it has, he could be someone to check for again. All a nigga needs is a really good album for people to check for you again, ask Raekwon.
Everyone else? Depends on if we hear an album this year for sure. I dont know if Rick Ross, Eminem and Drake will release albums this year or 2012. I dont know if Chy Da Prince gets a debut or will just slang a mixtape or too. Same with Fab, although he’s never been quite at the cusp to finally dominate. And old favourites like Common, Talib Kweli and Ghostface may or may not have albums out.

B. Dot was the only person who appeared to actually follow hip hop. That was worse than MTV’s Hottest MC list, which is amazing. Heres my list for ’11 Hottest MC’s
10 Pusha T – He might not get his solo debut in ’11 but he should at least release a mixtape and get featured on other GOOD Music releases (ie Watch the Throne & Finally Famous)
9 Big Krit – His debut is scheduled to come out in the summer, which will be good considering Krit Wuz Here is one of my favorite mixtapes of 2010
8 Big Sean – FInally Famous will have GOOD Music features, which alone makes it anticipated
7 Wiz Khalifa – Black & Yellow should get him a release date and his album will be sick
6 Young Jeezy – TM103 will be sick, he just needs a good single
5 Eminem – Most likely no album, but any Em feature will get attention
4 Jay-Z – Watch the Throne and Monster video. A few other features?
3 J. Cole – He could easily take over the rap game if he can just make a hit single to appeal to the masses and then drop the best debut since Get Rich or Die Tryin’
