J.Cole & Kendrick Lamar Project To Be LP
July 9, 2011 @ 11:27 AM EDT
News
During J.Cole’s interview with Hard Knock TV, he says the joint mixtape with K-Dot is about 4 or 5 tracks in and has recently been heading towards the direction of an album.
“I’m not settling for a mixtape because I feel we’re too talented for that and the music we’ve made so far is too good. I want to build. Even if it takes 9-10 months whatever, I feel like the final outcome of that project is something that hip hop needs.”
Somebody tell both of these niggas to drop their own albums before they even think about a joint project
It be takin these cats forever to write music- isn’t that their job? I’m not even anticipating albums anymore, when they drop they drop.
Cole…Seriously dude. You havent even dropped your own shit. Smh. Who is this kid’s manager? O_o
kendricks album is out..
~~THANK YOU!!! Cole seems like he’s content on doing side projects or something. The lights might be too bright for someone like him….Does he want it or not?
I MISS THE ’80’S AND ’90’S! THESE SKINNY JEANS RAPPERS LIKE KENDRICK LAMAR, LIL B, TYLER AND SOLDIER GIRL ARE WACK AS FUCK! THE SOUTH AND THE WEST ARE WEAK NOW!

9/27/2011 – haters will shut the f**k up !
@drew who…Kendrick dropped a mixtape, right? We’re talking a proper CD. Now Cole’s talking bout dropping ANOTHER mix tape before his actual CD comes out? WTH? Why when you have an actual single you could be promoting to sell your actual CD??? Makes no sense…..And if the songs are that hot enough on the mixtape to create buzz, they should be on your CD!!! Makes no sense..smh
Joint albums are never a good look, they sound like a good idea and then disapoint. This shit wont even see the light of day until the end of 2012. Watch The Throne will be nothing more than a adverage Kanye album with features from Jay-Z.
hey elliot wilson email me the new wale joint with cole..i wont leak it i promise!!
This mixtape bullshit needs to stop.
@michelle
No, Kendrick dropped an independent album, which reached #3 on iTunes. The difference is that typically a major label would take about 80% of the profits, whereas this way, Kendrick and his friends keep all of the money, without losing any control at all.
you can listen to the song he mentioned,”Temptations” here. http://dropthatjoint.wordpress.com/2011/07/09/j-cole-kendrick-lamar-collaboration-to-be-an-album/
Its absolute fire.
This won’t happen but if it did..
I still don’t understand these street albums/mixtapes/independent album stuff – if it is that easy why do artists sign deals then— u have ur team, u have a studio, u still on radio, ur getting shows, people know u— what can the labels do other than own ur music and pit u in debt?
poeticassasin-
Promotion. Lots of promotion. The major labels either own or do business with all of the major radio stations, all of the music TV channels, and several of the big magazines/blogs, and if you’re not on a major, you’re simply not going to get any attention from these. They can open doors to collaborations or tours, they have entire networks of people devoted to finding cross-promotional opportunities, and beyond that, they offer some stability to artists that have usually been up-and-down for years. Oh yea, and the distribution is a really big deal too- it takes a major in order to get your CD into almost any retailer.
But especially in the internet age, major labels are less and less necessary. I personally believe that if the independent labels banded together and developed their own cable TV channel, the tide would officially be turned in the war between musicians and their pimps.
@Donn his manager is Mark Pitts(Biggies former Manager)…they know what there doing..The album is coming and Im sure it will be worth the wait…
Wow J. Cole posts are so fucking annoying. Same comments every time. You ain’t A&R’s so shut the fuck up. You don’t know shit about promotion/marketing so shut the fuck up. Do you clowns listen to interviews or do you skim thru ’em? He said the material is TOO GOOD for a mixtape, why would he settle for less. He ain’t talking about all the bullshit. He’s saying its a waste to throw ’em out for free. Dumb fucks go fucking kill yourselves for real.

Independent=control over your music plus keep most of the money
Major=puppet
I rather he promote ColeWorld first and then drop the joint LP ’12
haters gonna hate….trollers gonna troll.
Man i cant wait to here the album with lamar can wait.
Man I cant wait to here cole album the one with lamar can wait.
Yea u said CD, how many of us are still buying hiphop CDs though, or using the tv to find out when our fav artist is gunna drop? Certain artists I don’t feel need a major to get their sales, I.e. Nas, hov, busta, redman- no major label is gunna increase their sales – even someone like Jim jones, we kno he’s gunna sell around 30,000 first week and in 2 months be around 100000- nothing is goin to change that. Maybe the newer artists need a major, but even still Tyler sold 50000 first week via his team , not a major label like the 3 or 4 that are still out. I didn’t even kno frank ocean was on def jam— look how long he’s been doing his thing and def Jam is tryna put out his cd that we already got for free in aug- seriously?
At most 2 pop songs…
but 13 Hip hop songs
13 > 2
Why are you guys complaining. You need radio/mainstream songs to sale your album.
“In order to change the game you have to play the game” J. cole
Look at it this way:
Kendrick sold 10k of Section80 in like 3-5 days.
He probably made more income (not factoring tour/show money) having an independent album release than what Big Sean made from being on GOOD/Def Jam.
Like Zendo said, what a major can bring to the table is just promotion resources and $$ to major radio stations to get spins.
But times are changing, and with this internet era, niggas can cut off the middle man and make profit if they get on their grind.
That idea of independent labels banding together to create an outlet of the music would be a major win, and these majors would def. be shitting bricks.
I totally agree w that Zendo.
Back to the topic @ hand tho, this would be a dope album. Whenever it drops, I will be getting it forsure.
the real money in music is in joint ventures and touring if you dont have your own record label I.E lil wayne eminem jay-z and kanye thats distributed through a major label then your not making anything
independent is the best way to go in this day in age in music where nobody buys albums but they always talking sales
I see we have a comment board full of industry experts.
These joint projects will never see light, too much ego & politics involved. Wish these niggas would just make music an stop TALKING about making music.
HA! KENDRICK IS FUCKING WACK! ANNOYING VOICE AND WACK ASS LYRICS! SMH ANYBODY WHO BROUGHT THAT SHIT SHOULD KILL THEIR SELF!

Kendrick Lamar > Jermaine
Why dosen’t Tyga and Cory Gunz have the buzz of Drake, Nicki Minaj, Wiz Khalifia, and J. Cole?
Kendrick Lamar is wack. I don’t see what Dre sees in this little special ed sounding kid.
how u talking about a collabo album and u aint even put out your solo yet?
Tyga “Far Away”> J. Cole “Work Out”
You niggas need to pay more attention. Cole clearly said the mixtape is THROWAWAY TRACKS. Not a WarmUp type mixtape, but throwaways. Calm the fuck down. Why are ppl complaining about free music? Its just as easy as putting the songs together, zipping them up, and posting it to his site.
@Word please get off J. Cole’s dick that prolly he won’t drop Cole World you won’t get off his dick
co sign @That Nigga
The question is when will your album really drop?
Yo Cole you haven’t dropped your shit yet you talkin’ ’bout this joint album smh.
@Subaru.. U clearly a one song listener lol.. somebody please inform this clown
TOP 5 POSTS PLEASEEEE
A lot of people on here are acting like they know about the music industry and how the infrastructure works.
Let Cole do his work on the mic. Music is music. Whether its on a officially released album from his label or an independent piece of work that he and his homies release themselves.
Appreciate what gets released because yall ain’t doing a damn thing to keep peoples ears happy.
You don’t like it, do something about it.
J.Cole and Kendrick two best out there no argument
J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar are the best rappers ever…stop the hating… But ey I gotta push my own ish http/mp3tweet.com/hw3
Ya’ll are fuckin stupid, the 2 best upcomers in rap/hip-hop collaborating on a an album..It will be better than Watch the Throne. Respect what they are doing, Cole made it and Lamar is doin his thing on the west coast, it’ll be legendary..watch and see
It’s disappointing to read all these comments hating on J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar… there are finally some hip hop artist actually coming out and spitting the truth, puttin lyrical content back into the music, and ppl actually have the audacity to sit up here and talk shit about it? its disappointing to true hip hop fans as opposed to all u ‘rich rap’ fans…
J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar, disregard all the hate and negative talk. The love for ur music in the blood of ur fans, is 10 times stronger than the hate in the blood of these haters. Keep doin yo thang, regardless of how long it takes. Yall will still have fans that are willing to wait for however long it takes you to make ur music. Real Music. Classics. Thanks for bringin the real back…
