The last classic Nas was Distant Relatives. That album is one of the contributions to music, ever. That album made me become obsessed with Damian Marley’s music, and then all of Bob Marley’s music which I only had faint interest in. I listen to them religiously now. That album is more artistic and unique than any album to come out since, forever.
The last solo Nas album classic? The n1gger album. The conceptual direction of that album was extraordinary. As a black man, I thank Nas more for that album than the great Illmatic, because at the end of the day Illmatic was a great album, probably the best rap album ever, but it’s concept wasn’t revolutionary, I mean it never pretended to be so it’s no insult to it, I’m just saying that the n1gger album did more for me and my community. Nas’ preachings in that album weren’t about what we should do, it was about what he should do and what we can do. That album was a masterpiece.
