Recession? What recession? Later today, Dr. Dre and business partner Jimmy Iovine will donate $70 million to the University of Southern California. The endowment will be used to create the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation.

Set to launch in Fall 2014, the four-year program will offer undergrads courses in entrepreneurship; technology, art, design and marketing. In a statement, USC President C.L. Max Nikias says:

“The vision and generosity of Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young will profoundly influence the way all of us perceive and experience artistic media. Our goal is to ensure that the academy is the most collaborative educational program in the world.”

  6. Black Shady says:

well the guy talking about tax write off IS NOT wrong.

Charitable donation deductions is real, and the more money you have, the bigger is the deduction. But still props to them for doing that

  7. xtrajordinary says:

that’s really tight I guess…but I feel like ghettos need that money more than kids going to college

  8. ZoomZoomDad-Otis says:

    Niiicccee !

  9. ARTOXICATION says:

Put it into communities; but then you would have to go into them. You shouldnt have to attend college to enjoy the benefits of the arts.

Good move, but when someone else donates more, the name can change, then what? If donated to neighborhood/community centers the community impact would last longer and be a stronger connection between everyday people and the arts, which is lacking.

  10. Evil says:

    Dope.Mad respect for that!

  11. The Facade says:

    @ ARTOXICATION
If someone else donates more than 70mil specifically to this program then that’s amazing but Dre and Iovine will always be remembered as the people who started the program…This is amazing it’s essentially Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s own college under USC.
Very cool by them, interested to see what the coursework is like

  12. PistolPistol says:

Not even touching the Beats money they pocket

  13. rahrahrah says:

I don’t know what their giving habits are, whether or not they give to other communities, but I don’t know of too many from south central who get into USC.

  14. Nathaniel says:

i think the program itself, who it is developed by, the course work/curriculum, and the fact that it has the “Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation” with Dr. Dre attached will help attract the brightest in the black community. if we can help teenagers fall in love with their people, then they’ll be in the hoods post-college raising the condition of the people with what they learn there.

we can’t keep assuming every person that comes into knowledge will hoard it and hide it from the unlearned, just because so much, and america in particular, has been built on that occurrence. it’s a new day, if you haven’t began to notice, yet.

  15. i smell a plot. either way its cool. but i do smell some bullshit cooking

  16. veesky says:

I definitely think it’s admirable but like some others on this post have suggested, I can’t help but think this money could’ve served other purposes. Whether that be other institutions (USC is pretty prestigious and has a nice endowment) or establishing and/or revitalizing local community programs, other initiatives for people less fortunate, who may need some pre-college guidance, etc. But, at least they’re doing something.

  17. TImeChange says:

yea,its cool, but where did you come from dre? what made you? could of gave a lil somethin to the community?

that’s really tight I guess…but I feel like ghettos need that money more than kids going to college”

Or maybe we should encourage more ghetto youth to attend college?

  19. J-N-A says:

Yall listen to yourself? Giving back to the community ? Donating money for education is the best way to give back to the community because education is the key.
Giving back to the ghetto???? If ghetto people want that money all they have to do is (just like the rest of the world work and) get into college.
And finally, at least Dre is donating money for education while JAYZ and others are buying handbags and cars…just sayin’

  20. Jajem. says:

he is giving back to community dumbass while doing this

  21. Derek says:

Believe it or not some of us put ourselves through college while working full time. Not everyone goes to college on their daddies dime. So if you live in the “ghetto” work your ass out of it and get yourself an educations instead of relying on someone else or blaming it on the “ghetto.”
