Macklemore Talks Grammy Wins & Kendrick On Hot 97

Hours after racking up four Grammy Awards, Hot 97 called Macklemore this morning to speak on his wins and Kendrick Lamar’s snub. Following the ceremony, Mack shared his text message to Kendrick via Instagram.
Biases and preferences aside, the fact that both artists were nominated in non-rap categories is a victory in itself. And in case you’re keeping score, it’s been a decade since two hip-hop albums were nominated for Album Of The Year. Should Kendrick have won Best Rap Album? Perhaps. good kid, m.A.A.d City was remarkable. But on the flip-side, Macklemore shouldn’t feel guilty nor make any apologies for winning. The Heist was an independent release that spawned monstrous singles. Hell, even ScHoolBoy got his first platinum plaque for their collaboration, “White Walls”. The next time the subject of “white privilege” is raised, ask Action Bronson, Asher Roth, Machine Gun Kelly, Rittz, Yelawolf, Mac Miller, Caskey, Chris Webby or Hoodie Allen what happened to their nominations. Better luck next year.

Yes make the argument about him being an indie artist but he wasn’t the one to break the barrier between independent artistry and commercial success.
We saw artists like Mac Miller do it, the only differences is Macklemore was able to sell it to a broader demographic.
On the flip side, Kendrick cracked the top 40 with songs like Swimming Pools, Poetic Justice and Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe.
That’s what I call breaking a barrier and deserving a being recognized.
Kendrick’s album stood for the whole genre of rap and we are angered not because of who won but because of who didn’t win.
B. Dot, I agree with you that Macklemore is nice. I thought he should have won for rap song and best new artist, but not rap album. Your site stated that GKMC was a superior album to the “The Heist” in your end of the year review for 2012. Pretty much all of the Hip-Hop industry, to include the artists and the media, agrees with the opinion of your site. Does it not frustrate you that your opinions and the rest of the cultures was not recognized by the Grammy committee? If I dedicated my time, energy and passion to something and was told by a group of people who have generally no knowledge, understanding, or love that essentially what I stand and believe doesn’t matter, I would be extremely frustrated. The Grammys even knew that this would happen, that’s why there are reports that committee considered not nominating Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for that award. This was the most disheartening event I have ever seen in the past 25 years I have been a HIp-Hop fan, aside for the tragic deaths of Eazy, Pac, BIG and Pun. A young man created a piece of work that gave insight to the dangers that many decent minority citizens face on a daily basis living in an urban environment that was different from all other projects done before it. It did not have any singles that many would consider commercially viable and it still went platinum. It met all the requirements critically and commercially and it lost. Do you not feel in anyway frustrated by that fact?

Indepedent artists that don’t have hip hop co-signs and million dollar marketing budgets shouldn’t be winning rap grammys. Hip hop isn’t about the underdog indie struggle! A lot of people don’t understand how the Grammys work and are judged. Its the riaa, an association of people who went to school for music. So you may have a “stuffy” music engineer with a degree that has to vote on the hip hop category and doesn’t listen or know how to critique hip hop and furthermore who has never heard of Kendrick. But, has heard of macklemore because of all the radio airplay. The example I give is when people go to the polls to vote and they don’t know all the candidates, they just vote on whoever because they don’t know. Lol…..the riaa votes well on rock, jazz, and classical because those forms of music are the same AND that’s what you study in music 101 in school, not hip hop.
Macklemore was gracious in acknowledging that he shouldn’t have won. Props to him for that. He worked his ass off to make The Heist and it’s a good album
B.Dot, it’s not about race per se (although denying that it has an impact is ridiculous as well) it’s about 1) a watered down, poppified version of hip hop that doesn’t represent the culture and 2) the historical ramifications of the art that DOES represent the culture effectively being written out of history. I’m not suggesting that the Grammy’s are everything, but the most prestigious music award that can be given to a musician is a Grammy. And the fact that Kendrick didn’t receive 1 and Macklemore got 4 is a problem.
It’s only further highlighted by the historical context. This is not an anomaly. As much as folks were upset, they weren’t surprised. The majority of the genre’s classic albums have not been recognized. Whether it was because rap was not deemed real music and thus not given a category or now where the most critically acclaimed music that is representative of the culture is either not nominated or given nominations, but never winning (i.e. Nas, Biggie, 2Pac Kendrick, etc).
I understand B. Dot’s relationship with Macklemore. He was one of the early spokesman and has been repping him before all of the success. I also salute Macklemore’s independent hustle and respect what he’s accomplished. He has no reason to feel guilty for seeing his hard work rewarded. However, the purveyors of the culture(i.e. journalists like B.Dot) that have the loudest voices should be the ones to speak out against what is a pattern of disrespect to the culture.
Dr Dre, arguably the greatest rap producer of all time, has 6 Grammys. 0 of them are with NWA. 0 of them are with Snoop. 0 are for 50 Cent’s work. 0 with Kendrick. He has 1 solo and 5 with Eminem (including “Crack a Bottle” and Relape). 50 Cent’s only Grammy by the way is for a featured verse on “Crack a Bottle”

Naughty by Nature’s Poverty’s Paradise, which no one remembers, won the first Best Rap album Grammy beating out 2 Pac’s Me Against the World and De La Soul. Skee Lo was also nominated that year! And lest you think that was a bad year for hip hop, that was 1996! Reasonable Doubt, It Was Written, Hell on Earth, Ridin Dirty, The Coming, all came out that year.
B.Dot, minimizing the significance of this pattern tells me that you’re not on your job. Especially by diverting this issue to solely about race. I get that Macklemore’s your boy, but it’s bigger than that. The shit’s not going to change until folks with a platform say and do something about it. And as much as we commenters tweet and write about it, it’s not going to have the impact that a “Rap Radar” or “Hot 97” and others will have..XXL, the Source(assuming they’re still relevant), Complex or whoever needs to write about this to highlight it.

Agree that there was definitely something contrived about his response, but he knew to expect the backlash and predicted as much well before he won so I think it’s safe to assume that his response was premeditated. Yeah, the real issue comes from the folks that should be the voices of the culture who aren’t representing for us. It feels like the hip hop journalists would rather be the cool guys hanging out with the stars than thinking critically about the impact that these events have. I respect Elliott Wilson, but if he’s the “GOAT of hip hop journalism” then we have problems.

very much agree there has to be something we need to do to get our voice heard to the grammy, its seems some well deserve hip hop artist only get a grammy when they work with white artist, case in point jay won with collab with justin, and another thing i notice every time there is a white person in the best rap category the white person always wins except for the year 07 when late registration won over encore which i believe they got that right. I think its the only time they got it right, although i think eminem is a great rapper, in my opinion, out of the 5 grammy he won he only should of gotten 2 for MMLP & Eminem show, but if you look at the albums he was against its no wonder he won all 5 shit even relapse got a grammy to me that was his worse one he even said it himself.
This is why to hip hop the Grammy Awards are irrelevant. No where in the history of Hip Hop will the amount of Grammy Awards an artist has won or has not won be a testament to their contribution, value, or impact to our culture. The Emmy’s have worked hard to prove that their opinion on hip hop music will hold no relevance at any point which in the future will severely diminish the value that any artist of any genre hold for this award.

Why would anyone care about videos today? And how should Kendrick talk about social issues? He’s from Compton and is reporting what he’s seeing without debasing it or glorifying it. Ah well the only way for independent artist to gain traction is by making videos on youtube. I’m not sure if you think you can just come out with a mixtape and be instantly put on radio stations around the world. It is through youtube that unsigned artists blow up. That’s why Macklemore has had to make great videos to gain attention. Whearas Kendrick could just have Interscope pay millions for national radio/video exposure.
Kendrick did talk about the social issues in Compton on his album. His album was about that and he did it in a ground breaking way. However, his songs/videos by themselves didn’t connect with most people, just a select group (nothing wrong with this, this is probably better for Kendrick anyway btw).
And Ryan Lewis’ production is sounding much more inspired than Dr. Dre’s recent production. Maybe he should stop making headphones and focus on making music.
You said the key word: independent. Kendrick’s not an independent rapper, Macklemore is. Therefore, it goes without saying that Macklemore has more to gain/lose from putting his creative input towards video production as opposed to music, which is what Kendrick does. I don’t expect rappers to be great video directors. We can agree to disagree on Ryan Lewis.

Lol it’s not a problem, it’s your opinion. So we should have Chief Keef represent the ‘culture’ and “increase the murder rate”. The culture also has been about promoting violence from the beginning. Kendrick does a good job of not doing that for the most part, but saying Macklemore isn’t in the culture is bullshit. Listen to his old raps. He does nothing but give the greats props. Bringing up Chief Keef is a complete diversion. He wasn’t nominated. No one’s advocating for him so why bring him up? Why bring up promoting violence at all? None of the rap albums nominated promoted violence. GKMC very clearly shows the horrors of violence and speaks on it from a perspective of someone who grew up in that environment.
I made a point to give Macklemore props, for his music and his comment after winning the award. I also never said he wasn’t hip hop. His album is good. Is it great? Or a classic? In my opinion, no. And GKMC IS, in my opinion. Yes, those things are my opinion.
But if you re-read what I wrote, it’s less about Macklemore and more about a history of the greatest rappers and rap albums of all time not being recognized by the Grammy’s. That is a clear pattern. That’s NOT opinion. That’s fact. If you compiled a list of those considered the best rappers of all time (Biggie, Nas, Pac, Rakim, Kane, KRS 1 Scarface etc.) and the best rap albums of all time (The Chronic, Ready to Die, Doggystyle, All Eyes on Me, Blueprint, Illmatic, Midnight Marauders, Moment of Truth, Straight Outta Compton, 36 Chambers and so on and so on) most of those rappers haven’t won Grammys and most of those albums did not win (or weren’t even nominated) for best rap album.

macklemore just explained that the people who works for the grammy committee or the music industry get to vote for the grammys. macklemore was one of them. when he had the ballot, he realized that he was voting for the genres that they’re unfamiliar with. that’s how Kendrick got robbed because he wasn’t more recognizable like Macklemore is. Although kendrick had a great album, his hits aren’t big enough like macklemore. therefore, macklemore swept the whole rap category due to his popularity in the industry, due to how successful his hits are.
Congratulations Macklemore on helping to elevate Hip-Hop to a much higher level. I believe this uproar, which has been brewing for months, is based on race. Hip-Hop has an issue with white rappers. Eminem, pre-MMLP, was considered the new Vanilla Ice, or an Elvis robber baron. But just like Eminem, Macklemore has a very underground Hip-Hop background. We stopped caring about the Grammy awards in the 90s. White people don’t have to apologize and feel guilty for winning a hip hop award at the American Music Awards or the Grammy’s. Its not like these awards factor into anyone’s top 5 Dead or Alive List.

There needs to be a serious conversation about adding a Rap and Alternative Rap category. Both were tremendous projects in there own right, but in terms of what traditional rap is Kendrick represents that, while Macklemore represent a hybrid mix of what rap has become.
In fairness, it’s not like any other dude or group can’t go get a live band, develop a good stage show, create a unique sound, and make some GOOD f*cking music!! Some nggz are just lazy and want to play the race card when they need to put the work in & go get it!
A serious case could be made to have 2 categories for rap:
1. Best Pop Rap Album (Macklemore, Black Eyed Peas, Pitbull, Flo Rida)
2. Best Urban/Traditonal Rap album (Kendrick, Nas, Jay Z, The Roots, etc)
They have separate categories for jazz, rock, R&B. Then each artist/label could ask for an album to be submitted to one of the 2 categories, similar to the Oscars and Emmy’s.
Again, these are the kinds of things the representatives of the culture are supposed to be speaking on.
Once again the grammys are out of touch. Macklemore I salute for being honest but he really didn’t have to do it. My biggest beef is the cut away from the awesome performance of Kendrick and Imagine Dragon to wack ass country performance

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis made one of the best RAP albums of the year. Here’s why.
1. True it did get pop buzz and mass appeal but that’s just a result of making a project people can connect to, just like A-Milli by Lil Wayne, it was different and connected.
2. At no part did Macklemore not have well thought out bars you have to respect nor did Ryan Lewis not have a tailor made beat to back him up.
3. Not only did he RAP well he also made a cultural impact by putting out singles about subjects no other rapper would dare touch like equal rights and gay marriage.
4. Mack & Ryan have NO major backing. No co-sign from Jay-Z, no YMCMB on their lower back. They had a vision to tell their story of their journey and they did it their way.
5. They did not land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on them. People are not upset that they are white but that the more blacker album didn’t win. Hip-Hop is evolving.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis deserved everything they got if not more. It’s not robbery, it’s hard work being acknowledged and patience paying off.

I don’t understand why anyone gives a damn what the Grammys say because they showed long ago they have no idea what they’re talking about, and I do think they’ve shown some pretty egregious racial bias over the years. But I understand why people in hip-hop are upset about this. GKMC deserved the award and anybody who understands rap will not argue this.
But c’mon – you want to complain about Macklemore being “poppy”? Yes it appeals to a wide audience but it’s not that cookie cutter pop shit that A LOT of rappers do. You are right kendrick did deserve recognition. But we can’t simply ignore the value of impact. Mack and Cheese hit harder…that we can’t deny. Why I think that everyone is really disturbed by this is the false notion that Hip Hop/Rap is still a “black” thing. Consumer wise we are the least relevant group. We make the least impact at the registers. If only these awards were solely based on the craft it self…
