Lupe Fiasco was at Hot 97 this morning to plug his cancer inspired single “Mission“. The conversation shifts at the 23:27 mark, in which Lupe accuses Rosenberg of being on Kendrick Lamar’s scrotum. Ha!
Dude had some points, but was on some weird stuff as well throughout the interview.

Huh? Lupe has sold a shit load of records. Not to mitigate Kendrick, but Lupe is way more successful than he is.

Only thing is Lupe is definitely not in it for selling records or being the most trendy or whatever. He’s 99% mostly about substance. One of his most successful records (Show Goes On) is him bashing his own record company. Lupe is not even in the race with other rappers cause with Lupe your dealing with an artists thats in completely other dimension when it comes to music. The Cool, concept, idea and overall trilogy is one of thee most genius body of songs ever period. If Kendrick passes Lupe (which overall I dont think Kendrick can do but check back in 5 years), thats fine cause Lupe aint even racing or competing with Kendrick. Lupe is about consciousness over almost everything in the business.

Lupe’s music does sound good though and declining from what? Sells? He obviously aint in it for that? Lyrically? He probably got more lyrical over the years so…. Lupe was the man? When was that? Ever sense he came out people been acting like he’s too smart to be listened to. There is nothing left for Lupe to prove at this point because he did everything you could do as a rapper. The only thing else he could do is just keep rapping for longevity purposes. Lupe has about 8 mixtapes, a few Eps and 4, soon to be five albums so in his 8 year career thus far he’s delivered more so then most MCs with the same amount of time in. If your talking musicality? Kendrick is not even in the same galaxy as Lupe. Lupe is himself, Snclsh, Japanese Cartoon, Lupe the gorilla etc… all in one MC. He could go from extremely conceptual to party animal in just a few minutes of a DJ set and sound like himself as well as a totally different kinda artist and it’ll still make sense musically. I would say his music needs to sound better? Id say it probably sounds too good at this point, to the point where now its ahead of the time in 2014 so people may say it dont sound good but the ears probably aint caught up yet. Lupe sounded like rap from 2024 in 2014.

Lupe trash now nd he used to not be trash, hence y i said he used to be the man, nd u wanna know about Kendricks next album!?, its gonna do numbers no doubt about it, nd if ur response is gonna be “oh its not about the numbers”, then I’ll say every project Kendrick has dropped has been good so i expect the same from this upcoming album
Its not about the numbers when Lupe is concerned but is that really the game you wanna play? Has Kendrick outsold Lupe? NO. You talking about what Kendrick is gonna do?… I speaking on what Lupe has already done but for the sake of debate, lets say Kendrick’s next album sells a billion copies? Does that make him a better artists then Lupe? Not necessarily. Lupe is not here to be a commercial rapper worried about sells. You listen to a song like Unforgivable Youth from his last album and its apparent that Lupe is here to drop genius period.
I hope Kendrick does sell alot but Lupe been in the game 8 years. In hip hop every week albums sells are getting worse, now fast forward 8 years from now and we dont know what Kendrick’s sells will be like and the possibility of him selling more the Lupe, even with a platinum album? and just a safe bet just cause he’s Kendrick Lamar. Has Section 80 even sold 25k?
This is how one should argue. Note that I am not even here arguing for Lupe. I just want to start seeing Hip Hop fans having sensible arguments about our shit and not go off on some teenage tmz style B.S. How come Hip Hop is the only art form that can’t have artists be just artists? Why is everything a sell or shell argument? No wonder we never surpassed Rock & Roll and are going backwards. No respect for art. The record labels are winning.

Not to mitigate your point…but lupe has been decently big in rap since 2006 and released 4 albums. How many platinum albums does he have? Give kendrick time and his career is gonna be much more successful. And Lupe himself said that lasers was him just doing what the label wanted, hence my selling out remark. I respect lupe as an artist, but putting logic ahead of kendrick? Really man?
Kendrick is more then welcome to be more successful then Lupe. Thats not why Lupe is in the game. At this present time though, Lupe has sold more then Kendrick.

Listen sometimes I think lupe talks 2 much and takes his self 2 serious but this interview showed me a different side and I mostly agree with his argument but at the end of the day the thing he said that should resonate with diehard hiphop debaters is that those are HIS opinions everybody is entitled to one you can disagree with them but u can’t be mad unless it’s presented as fact
