Question, and I mean this seriously.
If illmatic came out, as is, in 2014, would it still be considered a classic? Would it impact the way it did?
In my honest opinion, I’m not too sure. Great hip hop seems to be linked to the time and climate it came out in, and for then, it was a true paradigm shift, and we probably wouldn’t be where we are without it, but hasn’t hip hop evolved?
I wonder if a 15-year-old kid can still truly get into that album, or is it just too dated for them to pick up.
Personally, I sometimes sit and listen to some Grand Master Flash, De La, ATCQ or old LL shit and think, “damn, most of these rhyme schemes are kinda dated.” Not to take anything away from them, cause they paved the way, made this whole thing happen.. I just think it’s all gotten better (most of the time, anyway).

I feel exactly the same way about the Beatles. Just can’t rock with it, no matter how amazing you tell me it was at the time. Although if you get into Motown, James Brown, MJ etc. somehow there isn’t a lot out these days that can touch it.
