  7. Marley71 says:

I’m curious. Does an artist have to make a choice. Can she do that “move that bass” song, and this? Styles P did “I’m Black”, Jada did “Why”, and then they switch back to their hard stuff. Does it benefit an artist to have a consistent persona? Like Public Enemy, or Brand Nubian, or Dead Prez? I have my own biases but I’m more interested in hearing other fans give their opinions. Respect.

      INTERESTING!… Great Point sir!

    2. KILLA says:

In this day and age of rap music and the average consumer of it truthfully an artist does not have to make a choice. Sadly, the masses only care to what appeases their ears as opposed to the true message behind an artist’s music. However, with that being said those masses generally don’t buy those artists music so in the long run they will eventually fall by the way side. Truthfully, I think this will be the same for Tink. Is she a dope female artist from the few songs yes, but this track is clearly fitted for the time being and not her true feelings. Lauryn Hill was so successful because she truly believed in the message she gave in her music. Artists of our generation like Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Childish Gambino and some other cult like artists (Ab-Soul, Logic, Chance The Rapper, etc) have an overall message most fans truly believe in. Wale somewhat however, on occasion he panders to the masses or his true message is lost amongst the average listeners.

        interesting take.

That you are unable to provide as a journalist…sad isn’t it?

      2. ayohellno says:

i disagree that the masses only care about what appeases the ear more than the message. i believe by happenstance we live in a time where consumerism is the main driving force of the music industry, but it wasn’t always that way, it’s just a result of when you take art and box it into a business structure. but in my opinion, the reality of who we are as human beings is that we gravitate towards artists and music that speak to us. sure, on a case by case basis that could range from iggy to lauryn hill, and from the look of it, it would appear that people generally like watered down artists. but how many watered down artists actually last? i think the hype and the machine behind it give the appearance that a lot of these artists are the ones, but most are here and gone within 4 years. i’m sure all of us can come up with a long list of rap acts that were super bubbling at one point, now are no where to be seen. artists like Lauryn Hill and the others you named aren’t nearly as numerous as hype machine artists. That’s just the nature of any industry, most people that work within an industry are mediocre, or ‘good enough’, whereas only a handful are truly great. in the 90s, hip hop had the benefit of still only mildly being accepted by mainstream america, so it still retained the spirit of having your own style, speaking about something, calling out ‘culture vultures’ & ‘being real’; with a touch of mainstream flare that eventually allowed Hip Hop to become the premiere pop-culture. Once Hip Hop became that big, in a sense it no longer belonged to ‘hip hop’, it then belonged to the world. From that we started getting a shit ton of new acts that grew up listening to hip hop, but didn’t necessarily grow up in the environments that nurtured that Hip Hop spirit, so their take and expression of it was 2nd or 3rd hand and different. Which is fine, that’s natural. As i’m writing this mouthful, I realize that we’re actually saying the same thing, i guess i felt that in a sense you contradicted your first line with ‘However, with that being said those masses generally don’t buy those artists music so in the long run they will eventually fall by he way side.’ I think that’s key, an artist can jump on ‘politically correct’ bandwagons & fake the funk all they want, but eventually that artists’ character will be called into question. the masses can only be fooled for so long by morally flip floppy artists. at the end of the day, there is NOTHING more powerful than good music with a great message, literally NOTHING. but we won’t get that as long as rappers are preoccupied with talking about how good they are at rapping.

        1. alex says:

Just wanted to say I didn’t up vote because I don’t agree with everything you said but I read it all. The debates on here are usually rational and sane, didn’t want you to think you waisted your time writing something that long.

        2. Jeff Hutch says:

That makes sense. It would have been better if you broke the whole thing down in paragraphs to make it more reader-friendly. Especially because you’re dealing with a lot of uneducated folks on the comment section. Good point nonetheless.

      3. yorapper says:

I think the rappers who claim to have a deep message in their music just can’t make good sounding music and hide behind the “deep message bro” rhetoric. Case in point, J. Cole.

      4. poetic assasin says:

I have no problem with the hard music, everything I listen to isn’t conscious- just tired of every song being shoot this-I’m selling this.

    3. Jeff Hutch says:

A true artist shouldn’t be afraid to explore different topics. 2pac did it successfully going from Dear Mama, Brenda’s Got a Baby to California, and Hit’Em Up, etc.

I hope Tink will live up to the hype.

    4. tipp0183 says:

They should do whatever moves then. Artist aren’t suppose to think about impact. Their main priority is to be artistic. Leave the conversation of impact to the audience. If something inspires their creativity they should do it. Fuck the repercussions, stay inspired!

    5. bronxbillyunz says:

WE’RE ALL CONTRADICTIONS IF U WANT TO CALL IT THAT – THE ARTISTS WITH THE CONSISTENT PERSONAS DO GO THE HOWEVER FARTHEST BCZ THATS HOW THE MIND WORKS – WE CATEGORIZE THINGS IN ORDER TO MAKE CHOICES. THE NEW RAPPERS ARE MORE LIKE IM NOT FROM THE STREETS BUT I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING ABOUT THE STRUGGLE – THE PAST GENERATIONS BUILT THEIR IDENTITY SAYING ” IM FRESH OUT THE STRUGGLE/ STREET OR IM STILL IN THE STREET BUT I JUST RAP ON THE SIDE…- U GOTTA LUV IT – BUT THE DAYS OF – IM THE GANGSTA, HE’S THE DRUG DEALER OR IM THE PIMP( PICK ONE & THATS UR CAREER) THOSE DAYS ARE OVER FOR NOW – FUNNY THING IS – EMINEM PAVED THE WAY FOR ALOTTA RAPPERS TO TELL THEIR TRUE STORY

  8. War Machine says:

She did, check youtube! she has a couple mixtapes on datpiff also.

  11. SmileNigga says:

She sound dope but I still prefer Rapsody the best female right now, since she doesn’t have a big Machine like Timbo she will go unnoticed in the masses which is quite sad.

  12. TheTruthHurts says:

This song is decent, again I like her singing more than her rapping so far. We’ll see if she can stay conscious in her rhymes at all or if shes just capitalizing on her new hype mixed with the riots. Still not nearly as impressed as most people after hearing like three songs by any means though haha.

  13. brandonEP says:

    she’s dope

  14. dmc says:

  18. Miranda Garner says:

Anybody got any of her old shit? Doesn’t feel like she’s writing these rhymes. Seems very methodical with the entire marketing scheme after the Aaliyah movie. If yall got a link to her older stuff post it and I’ll download.

    1. Billy Kincaid says:
