Jay Z Rap City Freestyle (1990)

Younger Hov.

Hov has sure come a long way. 25 years ago, an unknown Jay Z joined Big Daddy Kane on BET’s Rap City. The segment was to promote Kane’s disc, Taste Of Chocolate. Eventually, host Prime asked Jigga to kick a freestyle. Thankfully, the flow of the century has since improved over time.

  1. “Thankfully, the flow of the century has since improved over time.”

  2. Batman says:

Even though this aint a great freestyle, so dope to see old video recordings come out like this over such a long period of time. Wish more of these could be released.

    1. L - icopter says:

      What’s not great, about it?

  3. Albert says:

  4. Name a rapper that I ain’t influenced
Gave y’all chapters but now I keep my eyes on the Judas
With Hawaiian Sophie fame, kept my name in his music – Nas

    1. marty mcfly says:

This is 1990, Nas aint have any influence back then.

      1. Public Hairs says:

Word, it was once NaS debuted that his influence reached Jay a few years later. Good point.

        1. marty mcfly says:

How when Jay don’t rhyme like Nas (he don’t even write rhymes down) and he was recording Reasonable Doubt the same year Illmatic was released? When Illmatic came out Jay was trying to get distribution for Reasonable Doubt so it was likely already done. You gotta think Nas was on some different shit then Jay. They don’t rhyme the same and their life stories aint the same and their taste in music aint the same. Nas is more purest form MC, Jay is like a movie director in the studio, accept his film is based on his own true story. Nas was “influenced” by Pablo Escobar by the time Reasonable Doubt came out, Jay’s influence was his actual real life. These guys are not the same and Jay doesn’t need the influence of Nas when his own influence is at a level that it was.

          1. Public Hairs says:

I promise you I was trolling. *bumps “Dead Presidents”*. I know I’ve heard this hook somewhere before, hmm.

          2. marty mcfly says:

Does one sample on the hook mean Jay is “influenced” by Nas? Thats ridiculous. I have sampled Mobb Deep before (using a line from Prodigy as the hook) so does that mean everything I create is Mobb Deep influenced? Of course not.

  5. yorapper says:

See even if you’re the weed carrier of a famous rapper, you too can overcome and become one of the richest and most admired rappers of all time.

  6. did jay-z invented that migos flow listen to this and go listen to a migos record…the way he speed up the first couple lines then let you hear the last one

  7. ... says:

  9. THE REAL mac DIESEL says:

    @ B.Dot

DID YOU GET THIS FROM UNDER YOUR BED WITH THE REST OF YOUR JAY-Z PARAPHAN

    1. marty mcfly says:

In 1990 actually rapping fast like that was looked at as being dope and ahead of its time. The same way some people have better handles on a basketball court, rapping fast like that in the early 90s was looked at as having greater skill lyrically then the slower MCs. It looks funny now but in 1990 you woulda been saying dude can bust.

      1. THE REAL mac DIESEL says:

NEVER LIKED THAT STYLE OF RAP!!!! WIGGIDDY WACK!!!!

        DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

        1. marty mcfly says:

Well yeah because you were probably 5 years old when it was popular.

  10. ygg says:

Dude looked like a light skin young thug

  11. BEE says:

  12. Sina Mailer Daemon Djavadkhani says:

That late 80s wigiddy-wigiddy-wigiddy-wigiddy-wack flow! Interesting how the flow these days has become more minimal.

  13. THIS IS THE JAY THAT I KNOW WHEN I WAS 13 YRS OLD WITH THAT QUICK TONGUE FLOW

  14. Bumbum Billie says:

    500 million dollars later.

  15. jussayin says:

Damn…back when the flow was just as important as the bars…dope….i miss this jigga

  16. alex says:

“with no aids, the brother doesn’t have aids tell em tell em” huh?

    1. L - icopter says:

There was a false rumor out at the time that Big Daddy Kane had AIDS.

      1. alex says:

It’s crazy how ignorant people were about the aids back then as if it was emasculating in some way. He wasn’t happy that he didn’t have aids he was happy that he didn’t have aids because of what was perceived as to how you got aids.

  17. thirtyyearoldmillionaire says:

Why I respect HOV – nigga spent 8 years trying to be put on – made it now close to a billionaire. Watch the work ethic and learn something.

  18. BKs Finest says:

    1. L - icopter says:

      He would’ve been 20 in 1990

  19. L - icopter says:

Hov has always been nice – respect it.
