Weezy’s Hip Hop

Hip Hop was alive and well during last night’s airing of the 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards. Taped a few weeks ago at the Filmore, Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami, the ceremony was hosted by comedian and actor DeRay Davis and included electrifying performances, controversial cyphers and more. Lil Wayne’s illustrious career was recognized and was presented with the I Am Hip Hop Award.

Big wins of the evening included Cardi B taking the Hustler of the Year, MVP, Made-You-Look Style Award, and Best Featured Verse (“Motorsport“). Hip Hop’s royal power couple, The Carters grabbed Album of the Year with Everything Is Love as well as Single of the Year and Best Collabo thanks to “ApeShit“. Kendrick Lamar was bestowed as the Lyricist of the Year and BlocBoy JB’s SIMI earned him this year’s Best Mixtape.

Meanwhile, Childish Gambino victoriously pranced with his Best Video and Impact Track, “This Is America” and XXXTentacion was honored Best New Hip Hop Artist. DJ Khaled added another one with DJ of the Year and WorldStar took Best Site. Drake was dubbed Hot Ticket Performer while his frequent collaborator Karena Evans was dubbed Video Director of the Year.

The ceremony included performances from Lil Pump, Gucci Mane, Cardi B, T.I., Yo Gotti, YG, A$AP Rocky, Lil Baby, Gunna, and more. Checking in with this year’s cyphers included Vic Mensa, T.I, Anderson .Paak, Vic Mensa, Casanova, Nick Grant, Reason, Erykah Badu, YBN Cordae, Shawn Smith and many more.
