Fight the powers that be.
Hip Hop pioneer Chuck D is taking his record label to court for millions of dollars in commissions and for his music publishing catalog.
The Public Enemy frontman says after signing with Reach Global Music and Terrordome Music Publishing with Michael Closter in 2001, Closter and the label cheated him with hidden transactions, false copyrights and fraudulent accounting. With a 42% stake of his music rights lost, Chuck D is seeking $1 million dollars in damages and his entire music catalog. Bring the noise.
Lack of business acumen is the reason why you need to have a lawyer review your contract before you sign it. If you did not do that, then you signed it at your own peril in order to run down the street bragging that you got a “deal,” and buy that big gold chain with your advance to impress the girls. Some “record companies,” (I’ll spell it our clearly if you can read between the lines) know that for an “artist,” getting a “deal” is an emotional thing so, like a car salesman who sells you the $1000.00 car mats and the $2,000.00 wheel covers, the get your publishing while you are all moist and excited to sign on the dotted line. I’m willing to bet that you used a lawyer for anything you signed after that. Good luck with your lawsuit. You’ll need lawyers for that too..
