Director Michael Rappaport tells MTV how disappointed he was that Phife Dawg was the only member of the group in attendance for A Tribe Called Quest documentary that premiered at Sundance Festival in Utah on Saturday.
“The last time I was with Q-Tip, he was fawning over the movie, [saying] ‘I love the movie. I think it could do this, I think it could do that.’ His feeling about the movie was even higher than my feelings about the movie. It’s disappointing that the rest of the group isn’t here. They were offered everything they needed … to get here. They chose not to be here. I felt like Phife last night at the world premiere handled himself as a gentleman and was so honest and sweet and vulnerable, the same way he is in the movie.”
The group issued the following statement below.
“Thanks to our fans for their support through the years and for the enthusiasm around the documentary. We hope that the film’s perspective conveys our love of hip-hop culture. We could not attend Sundance, but we want to express our love and appreciation for the support that we have received in advance of the film’s premiere tonight. We hope that it is well received.”
Wow he sound so gay?
I don’t get why they won’t support a movie that will give them more exposure. There irrelevant n e ways might as well take advantage of the fat that there doing a movie about you. Y’all niggas act like y’all are the beetles.. Just show up bitches. Latezzzz
cool
@ Converse
How should he sound huh? Gangster?? Is he supposed to be a really cool gangster??? And talk like hes hardcore….is that what you need to feel comfortable listening to this man speak?? You are a product of everything i hate, Im glad i dont know you cause i would hate you.
Michael Rappaport is an amazing actor (i.e. Men of Honor, Beautiful Girls, I could go on) and obviously has a true love for hip hop to go OUT OF HIS WAY to make an amazing documentary about rapper who have influenced his life in a big way obviously. Show this man respect, he deserves it.
So why dont you double check yourself before you start passing judgement. How bout that.
@Tim
i think he was referring to mike saying phife was “sweet” in disposition the night of the premiere. he doesn’t need to sound “gangster” or whatever that means…. but uh… at the very least, i think that “sweet” comment deserves a (pause). haha
lol but yeah mike is dope… Bamboozled, Remy from Higher Learning. he’s obviously down with my nigga Spike Lee. yep yep.
this tribe documentary must be heavy shit, y’all. i can’t wait to see what all the controversy is about. can’t wait.
What a bull …
i wanna see the movie ,i dont care what Q tip says
When and how can a nigga like me get to see this?
@Tim STFU! It obviously he dont care about hip hop, if he chose 2 go ahead with the project that was disaprove. I dont care if it is a autobiography HE GETS NO RESPECT!! ?SWEET? GTFOH HOMO!
Your the faggot you dick sucking insecure little bitch.
sweet boy converse.
^Hahaha! Funny lame!
i thought that michael r.was just happy about meeting some1 from a tribe called quest just speaking to him that,s all way of expression i guess since no1 else wanted to participate on the views about the film…nouf said thou…..
Bitter ass old rappers. If you wanna be mad, be mad at yourselves for not having your paperwork straight.
I use to respect the Tribe, but now that Q-tip is proving he’s a little bitch with a big head, I can’t respect them anymore.
q-tip is full of shit.
Fuck that hip hop rapist!!!!
Again, talking about group “issues” and not the movie. Ali had prior engagements, I’m sure income generating and no ones turning down paper, Tip already said he wasn’t supportive and Phife showed..
And in an attempt to play the Tip and Ali he basically calls Phife a fucking Puppy.. Seriously this Dude is a piece of work.
When you sign off on a project like this, it’s done before the Cameras Role. You do this with a person you trust to follow what you guys have a mutual understanding on..
They don’t want to support you.. Quit bitching about it.
And for Dude calling him a “great actor”…. Really!? Or was that a way to get some responses.. I can’t beleive anyone thinks hes a great actor.. Seriously
These hip-hop documentaries never work out without technicalities when it’s all said and done.
It’s because the people who are being documented can’t watch themselves do the stupid shit they do.
case in point, that “The Carter” documentary…
Waynes people saw that shit, got all pissed because it pretty much exposed him of being a promethazine double cup addict … and they didnt want it getting out there that way
Q-Tip just mad cuz ATCQ probly got into some ugly things thru out the documentary and he don’t want that out there. Well too bad nigga.

Michael Rappaport was looking to do a revealing documentary.
A Tribe Called Quest was looking to clear up a few things about its split.
But everyone has their own perspective of the truth. And therein lies the friction.
The worst thing to find out is that the group broke up over some sucker stuff. And that’s the truth. And it hurt all of their egos. They all were responsible for ruining an iconic brand of music.
In time, this too shall pass and they will reunite for a cause or event. But do not hold your breath on an album.
Im watching it cause Phife had no problem with it. Tip Dont speak for the tribe!
BTW ATCQ top 5 groups of all time!!!!
