Big Sean’s new single, “My Last” went on sale today for $1.29 on iTunes . Released early last month, the song has already landed on the Billboard charts. This Spring, G.O.O.D. Music’s Detroit Player will up his ante with his debut album, Finally Famous. Last week, Sean chopped it up with Rap Radar about his new tune, L.A. Reid, and the infrastructure of his Def Jam home.

How did you and Chris Brown hook up for “My Last” ?
That’s the homie, homie. That’s the G. He came to one of my shows random as hell one time— like, “What the fuck is Chris Brown doing here?” He was like, “Yo, I fuck with your music.” I’m like, “Shit, let’s get it in.” I didn’t think he was serious, but we ended up getting it in the studio in Miami and from there we became homies and started to make music. So we did like a good five songs together and one of them being my lead single, “My Last”.  And it’s crazy because, “My Last” was originally just me. It used to be me singing it, but of course he sounds way better. Once he heard it, he was like “I’ll definitely hop on it.” It’s also on his album coming out next month too.

What was the inspiration behind the record?
I feel like “My Last” has so many underlining messages. Of course, it’s going hard on anything like it’s your last. That’s the best way to approach any situation. But even in the sense of like, it’s a great party song. Something people can party, get fucked up to—but I want to keep that underlying message of this is what we worked for. We worked hard as hell to party like this.

The song also charted at Billboard, right?
It charted at 71 but it didn’t even go for adds yet. That’s just radio fuckin’ with it on their own. It goes for adds the week after next but I’m excited.

In an interview last year, you implied that Def Jam Chairman L.A. Reid didn’t understand hip-hop and was into those “hits”. Has he been supportive now?
Hell yeah, he’s supportive of it! That’s the only reason why my shit is moving. L.A. is a cool dude, man and he’s about that money. He has great taste in music. I wasn’t saying that he wasn’t a hip-hop fan—He loves them hits.

Right, you also said that when you went to the building, other artists like Rihanna and Kanye had their marketing plans laid out for them. Is it that like for you now?
Oh yeah, yeah man. They been going hard and supportive as a label. They really have been going hard for me and I get a lot of love over there. And they working as hard as they can for me. I really feel like a part of the family at Def Jam.

So is the album still on course for March?
It’s on track for March, but I’m pretty sure it may come out after that. Definitely going to come out soon. Definitely a priority. After March 29th, a lil’ bit after, but not too much.

You mentioned you were bringing new rhyme and style schemes on the album. Can you elaborate?
Just having fun with it bouncing ideas. A lot of people know me for the one word punchline flow that Drake really made popular, but he gave me love and shouted me out like saying “Yo, I got that from Big Sean.” Not necessarily new styles of saying stuff just saying it a lil’ different. I’m always down for bringing new styles and fresh shit to the game. Always.

Although “My Last” is on iTunes today, what singles did you bring to Def Jam that they didn’t believe in?
I thought “What U Doin” was a dope-ass record, man. I thought it was funny definitely a party—more of an urban record. But something I felt like it could relate to any situation. What you doing? Bullshittin’. I feel like that was a good record. Sometimes records take a lot of time. I remember Soulja Boy came out with [sings] “Turn My Swag On” and it didn’t pop off. And then way later, after he released another single, it came back and popped off.
