@ The Walrus: I mentioned Trey because of his mixtape “Let Me Hold That Beat.” You had that and now this. Don’t get me wrong, Trey can rap, but he kind of birth to all of the new generation singer first folks to want to try their hand at rapping. To your comment, the only one that sticks out to me with my definition (see earlier sentences) is Omarion. Andre 3 stacks was a rapper first so he does not count, one of the best I might add. Nate Dogg (R.I.P) and T-Pain were/are mainly hook guys, so they do not apply. (Feel there is no need to address the others so I’m leaving it here.)

son of a bitch . i don’t really know how the fuck, but beating up rihanna made him more popular .unbelievable . maybe teenage girls love bad boys . FUCK CHRIS BROWN and his “rap” mixtape
The Walrus says:
Nate Dogg did 3 solo albums, and T-Pain did 4, plus 2 mixtapes. So no, they weren’t just “hook guys”, and it’s kinda hilarious that u thought so. The “singer trying to rap” thing has been around almost as long as rap itself, but most (all?) of it is pretty awful. This is not a new trend, it’s an unfortunate extension of an old one.
You missed my point. I’m referring to “natural singers,” folks whose careers are large parts of just them singing. Nate nor T-Pain can be defined as R&B acts (vocalist), but Trey and CB are. Might have worded it a bit wrong, but that is what I was getting at. But to the original post, not a good idea for CB to do this because rapping is not his thing. I understand respect for it, but admire from afar.
The Walrus says:
And I cannot see any reason why Nate Dogg and T-Pain, 2 of the most influential R&B acts of the last 2 decades, would not be considered R&B. Other than that, we seem to be mostly on the same page.
and I said “mainly hook guys.” I know of their other work, but they are most noted for and recognized as hook guys in the hip-hop community. Wasn’t diminishing their other abilities and history, but highlighted what they are most known for. Also, if you are going to quote me, use my exact words, or you might miss something as you did.
You’re right, we largely do agree on the post, but I wouldn’t put those two as R&B acts. When I think of R&B acts, I think of singers, high notes, etc. Can’t recall a time when I’ve seen either do that. Trey and CB are FULL R&B artist, think there is a huge difference.
The Walrus says:
I’m not interested in your personal imagining of what you like to think of as R&B. The general public, Soundscan, Mtv, and every other credible source in the world categorizes both Nate Dogg and T-Pain as R&B artists. And you’re still completely off base, whether it be “hook guys” or “mainly hook guys”, because both artists have put out multiple songs featuring themselves as the only artists, rapping the entire song. I could just as easily and accurately say that Trey Songz is “mainly a hook guy”.
