Fred Hampton Jr. Reacts To Jay-Z Lyric

Despite the positive reception of The Throne’s “Murder To Excellence” not everyone is pleased with the track. Fred Hampton Jr, son of slain Black Panther Fred Hampton, expressed his frustration with Jay-Z’s lyric, “I arrived on the day Fred Hampton died”.  Coincidentally, Hov was born on the same day. While on a panel at the University of Chicago this past weekend, he had this to say:

“Fred Hampton didn’t die,” Hampton Jr. said. “He was assassinated. Saying Fred Hampton died is like the school teacher telling students that Christopher Columbus discovered America.” He later went on to refer to Jay-Z as Slave-Z, questioning his motives on the record.

    Did Fred Hampton and people like him die so that black people could refer to other blacks as slaves?

    Jr. should just be happy that Jay mentioned Hampton. He’s one of those figures in history who is barely mentioned in today’s society, he’s barely even mentioned in public schools. Jay mentioning him probably introduced more people to his legacy than his own son has.

  7. Loaded says:

  8. Tracy says:

    Jr should recognize that many don’t even know anything about Fred Hampton. the kids will look him up and discovery his story because of Jay-Z

  9. Whatajoke says:

    Do people not realize that in order to be assassinated, you have to “die”?!? Jay never said he wasn’t assassinated. What he said was 100% true, Fred Hampton “died.”

  10. kee says:

    da hell this guy talking about. . . .jay-z shouted the nigga out. .

  12. jobu says:

    that’s the problem – we as a people are happy with a mere mention……a shoutout if you will…… does anyone commenting on this post even know the story of the murder of Fred Hampton…. his murder was what started the OPEN KILLING season on africans worldwide.. even to this day the gov’t can come into your home with NO search warrant and arrest you on suspicion of anything they deem fit. we are at war and you dummies are making it easier for them to control you. You shouldn’t have to wait for a rapper to mention something for you to find it interesting. So if it’s not in a rap song ya’ll don’t know nothing about it huh? Damn shame.

  13. uh oh says:

    Blank Panther? Really?

  14. Trillfully speaking says:

    Honestly imma 21 year old black man, senior in college, majoring in accounting, from a 2 parent home from suburban Connecticut, i aint know who Fred Hampton was until I heard WTT. if it wasn’t for Jay, i wouldn’t have googled Hampton and informed myself. Black people still got that crab in a bucket mentality. Please stop Jr. And last I heard if a nigga was assassinated, he died. It was an innocent shout out, fuck outta here with that bullshit

  15. http://www.myspace.com/onepercentfree says:

    The murder of Fred Hampton film was produced by my father Emmett Grogan from Brooklyn (Ringolevio). He was the only white man allowed in the blank panthers HQ in chicago at the time and when they all looked at him he knew what that look meant. He ran with chairman Fred that whole summer then they Killed Him.

  19. City Observer says:

    Really F. Hampton Jr….Really…You choose to twist an artist’s attempt to expose to the world how great your father was into something that resembles ramblings from an out of touch old man…REALLY.

    I admit, I wasn’t too familiar with Fred Hampton until I heard his name on #WTT. Although I knew of the name, hearing it in Jay’s rhyme made me dig a little deeper. I think it’s an amazing thing that someone can reference something in a song that sparks investigation…that’s called learning…something that i think the late great Fred Hampton would’ve encouraged! Maybe Junior missed that lesson…I wonder even if he listened to the song. That song does nothing but promote black pride, power., and love, the mantra that the Black Panther Party lived by.

    Salute to all of the great men/fathers who have passed away.

  26. http://www.myspace.com/onepercentfree says:

    Jay-z made a mistake there is a difference between killed by and died.
    Most often, however, died of relates to disease or natural causes. Killed by usually relates to some unnatural circumstance.While they can sound similar, “killed by” suggests violence or meeting an unnatural end while “died of” is more factual. It sounds like something a medical examiner might say. Died of alludes to natural causes.

  27. Slave-Z……Thats a good one lol,I never thought of that .

  28. Julian says:

    Obviously Jay was shouting out Fred Hampton not dissing him. Fred Hampton Jr. obvioulsy hasn’t heard the song because the next bar he calls Fred Hampton “a real ni@@a” as well as himself.

  35. ??? says:

    Listen i’ve been up my black history from slavery to jim crow to lynching and the rape of our women the brainwashing all the assassinations that went down, the setups etc… that being said THIS right here is one of the reasons why we will never be one as a people. The fuckin IRONY with all this is the point of the song in itself and what Jay-Z said in the COMPLETE verse :

    “I arrived on the day Fred Hampton died
    Real niggas just multiply
    And they say 21 I was supposed to die
    So I’m out here celebratin’ my post demise
    If you put crabs in a barrel to insure your survival
    You gon’ end up pulling down niggas that look just like you
    What up blood? What up cuz?
    It’s all black, I love us”

    First of all whether you are assassinated, get hit by a bus, or contract a terminal disease the end result is the same you DIE. Dude just did what Fox and all them republicans do all the time take one line without the rest and misinterpret it. What does this accomplish? How does this help in any advancement? This is the type of isht I can’t stand where cats take an artistic medium where you have to get your point across in a limited fashion IE lyrics that rhyme, flow, being on beat and act like dude was giving a lecture with full sentences and paragraphs with the ability to elaborate.

    @Jobu

    Funny thing is no one man knows it all so how can you fault someone for not knowing ? Isn’t it better that they get it from a song and subsequently educate themselves i’m sure I can bring up a lot of things you know nothing about then turn my nose up at you because you don’t know it. You think by insulting people for not being up on something will even give them the incentive to find out about it?

    People always focus on the trivial instead of putting energy towards constructive acts.

  36. JHP says:

    It’s the truth, he died. When someone assassinates you, that means you die. Sure he didn’t die of natural causes. The difference is slim to none though in all reality. “I arrived on the day Fred Hampton got assassinated / real niggas just multiply” would be off beat and ruin the rhyme pattern. It was an innocent shout-out, dude’s son just wants attention that’s all

  37. D says:

    Some whites where implicated with Huey and the panthers …….

    That’s why Jay-z got fire because the real way to give back to the panthers is Anonymous.
    Fred jr. knows to well how artist use scenes and famous people for there own promotion if you give for real don’t put your name on it and that was what my father did for the panthers.

  39. Skip Dillenger says:

    @Arrogant Black Guy

    I don’t think are upset that he went at Jay-Z. It was the reason why he went at Jay-Z. It doesn’t make sense. Jay-Z was actually showing respect to his pops. Unfortunately because of flow, rhyme, and style purposes he couldn’t say he was murdered or assassinated. If he had a problem with the line, he could have reached out to Jay, and maybe he did who knows, but from the statement it doesn’t seem like it. While a lot of you think it’s funny to see a black man call another black man a “slave”, I for one do not. Doing that feeds into the slave mentality that many of us brothas want to escape but face each day. If he doesn’t like Jay’s business actions, past or present, that’s cool but those actions have no relation to that line.

    Hov didn’t say anything negative about dudes father…..”Real niggas just multiply”…he was showing respect in his own way.

    This lil “Jr” nigga just want his name out there so he feel the need to speak on it. His dad was so relevant to black culture. And he ain’t. He ain’t done shit.

  50. Y U MAD says:

    This just seem like he doesnt like Jay Z the person, what Jay Z represents- Corporate America. Thats how i interpreted it. Fred was killed, wait assassinated by Corporate America… just my own opinion!!!

  51. Smh says:

    Thats why our people don’t have anything!
    -22 two’s

  52. Y U MAD says:

    ^^^^ What i mean is that if it was Nas who dropped that line… i dont think it could have been a problem with Fred’s son.. because Nas represents Black America on a racial injustice movement type of raps, whereas Jay Z seem like he was just stunting on niggas with that line, not necessarily bringing social injustice behind Fred’s father’s death! Thats the issue here, he just didnt elaborate it.

  53. SD says:

    Cosign ??? BIG TIME

    Couldn’t have said that any better.

  54. Negrito says:

    I didn’t take that line personal. Also I knew Fred was murdered. I wonder if Dead z prez feels the same way cause Fred Jr. rolls with Dead Prez and in 2007 Dead Prez featured Jay Z on their 2nd album. The song was called HELL YEAH. DPz caught flack cuz Jay was featured. I thought it was a good song.

    I dont agree with the name Slave Z either. Tupac was a panther member and he was basically on the same road as Jay. He was just more profound but they actually not to different at all.

    I met Fred jr before but I dont agree with his statement but I truly respect his fathers legacy.

  55. Darius says:

    Gotta agree with Y U Mad.

    The bigger issue here is that Jay has done NOTHING for us. He just hops on the bandwagon in certain moments like when Obama was getting elected and make some simple raps like on Jeezy’s ‘My President’ remix, but compare this to someone like Nas, who’s last two albums have been solely focused on Africa and Blacks respectively, and that’s just narrowing it down, because it appeals and is directed at all minorities and races who suffer injustice within this system. Jay on the other hand is all about foolery.

    I’m not saying he has to spend time talking about it, no he doesn’t. But he can do something. Look at 50 Cent, I can’t recall him ever saying a word in any of his songs about this, but outside of music he has done a million percent more than Jay. With the G-Unity foundation, the Street King movement, his books and even in interviews (like as recent as the CNN Piers Morgan one). He doesn’t go there when there’s something happening, he creates the conversation.

    That’s why people mean when they say use your fame for good. Jay-Z is a rich mans version of Lil Wayne. Except he’s a quality rapper too.

  56. County of Kings says:

    lmfaooooo@ lop. nigga said ya pops got beat by forrest gump lmaoo i’m on the floor right now lmaooo

    @myspace nigga there is no difference between killed and dying fuck outta here. if your shot, in your head, like jfk, the doctor doesnt come out and say “sorry ma’am your husband has been killed” he says “sorry ma’am your husband has died”

    @darius, sounds like u just dont fuck wit jayz. how can u tell me what jayz dont do, and what 50 does do. u say jayz just jumped on the obama band wagon and jumped on a remix. like if 50 could have he would have just chose to. these ppl seek jayz out, not the other way around. jayz would be a fool to not take the invite to rep for obama. u talkin that nas shit, jayz inspires a billion more young black kids than nas does. bringing a nba team to brooklyn, look at how many jobs that creates alone. what the fuck is nas bringing to queens bridge? his words and well wishes? i would rather he grows his brand and then makes a significant impact with his words on a much larger scale

  57. Skip Dillenger says:

    @ Darius

    Have you forgotten about Jay-Z supporting the “Water For Life Project” he did with the U.N. in Africa? Or the 9/11 benefit concerts? What about his donation to the Columbine? The Katrina Relief Fund? Hell, he even stepped outside of normal self-indulgence and arrogance to address the tragic incident on the song “Minority Report” on ‘Kingdom Come’.

    “Ain’t I ‘sposed to be absorbed with mysel?/Every time there’s a tragedy, I’m the first one to help”

    http://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/200-jay-z

    This whole thing is really bugged out to me. He gave this man’s father props on the track. If Fred Hampton, Jr. had a problem with Jay saying his pops “died” vs saying he was “murdered” or “assassinated”, he should have tried to contact Jay-Z. Also as a black man, I’m really upset that he would call Jay-Z a “slave”. That action is the same type of “divide and conquer” mentality that his father would be opposed to.

    Yes, Jay-Z is a representation of Corporate America in the realm of Hip-Hop and Black culture, but it seems like he was actually showing some respect for us and the men and women who died for our rights by displaying to those assassins that killed our kings and queens that even though they tried to destroy us and our dreams, we have still risen above their oppression and negativity.

  58. damone says:

    Lmao! Dude is crazy. Because a black man made it he a slave. Get out of here

  59. Fuck Ya Life says:

    Damn niggas look for any reason to bitch and complain. If anything just from Jay sayin the line probably made people(like myself) look up and learn the history about the man. Jr probably tryin to get people to look at him.

  60. Darius says:

    @County of kings

    Sounds like I don’t fuck with Hov? Shit, didn’t you see me say he’s a quality rapper. He’s one of the best rappers of all time and I have almost all his albums.

    As for Jay inspiring and doing more for black kids than Nas? You gotta be kidding me. BK Nets creates jobs, that’s your argument? Do you understand that process, do you understand what that also means for Prudential Center in NJ? If you think Hov bringing the Nets to BK is about creating jobs then you’re sadly very mistaken. It wouldn’t have even crossed his mind. Your belief that Jay inspires a billion more kids than Nas is one of the most baffling things I”ve read here. You say that Nas only has words, as if that’s not enough. That is more than enough, more than his words though Nas has his message. 100 people buying Nas’ album dedicated to the struggle of African Americans lets them recognize more about our history and future than 1 period a week of history ever could at school. You think Nas also hasn’t acted? Are you serious, Nas has been one of the longest serving runners of the Common Ground force. He has always been the face of it. Also please read on what the Distant Relatives tour Africa’s proceeds went to. Building several schools. Thank you.

  61. 2DA says:

    @Darius I think jay z does way more than Nas starting with the Shawn Carter Foundations which sends kids to college. He raised a million dollars for the foundation by throwing a carnival in Manhattan. Look up Water for life which is a documentary of him giving creating a water fountain in some country in Africa. Come on man. I respect both but jay does more

  69. Darius says:

    @2DA

    Jay clearly doesn’t do more, he barely does anything. He never speaks on it. What he’s doing is a no show job. Running foundations like the one Jay is running (and in fairness the one Nas is apart of) is what is getting a lot of people in trouble, because it’s clear so many of these foundations and charities don’t give back and do fuck all. That’s why speaking about and raising awareness is always the key here. That’s what Nas does.

    It’s funny because the person you expected the least is the one doing the most. 50 Cent is the person that is at the top of the echelon of rappers giving back the most. His G-Unity foundation puts him on par with all these other bs foundations, but what sets him apart him is this SK thing. If he dies today, the fact that he already provided 2.5 million meals with a TRUSTED group like the UN WFP is remarkable.

  73. Citylivin' says:

    @Scholar
    what Jay did there was good….BUT…it can be debatable that he did it for promo because MTV is behind it (i know that’s a ignorant logic but that’s how folks think). But people like Alicia Keys have been doing this CONSISTENTLY for years with really no TV help…50’s doing the same thing but with more passion with no help (even tho ppl say he’s doing it for promo)….and Nas definately had NO help with a small group of protestors against a big machine like FOX….the big thing here is consistency….ppl like Nas,Lupe,Kendrick,Alicia Keys scream consistency even if it’s just through music.

  74. GWOPster says:

    Assassinated wouldn’t have rhymed as good as died on that line…

  75. daman says:

    @Darius Youre Just Bitter Dude. Out of All These Rappers, Jay-Z was the first of them to go to Africa and donate. Look it up. And you are not making your point. When is the last time you heard Nas doing something for the community? Jay-Z has plenty of foundations and he supports his home. That’s why he is bringing the Nets to Brooklyn & contrary to your thoughts, it is gonna create plenty of jobs. Don’t knock another nigga for being successful. That’s some true slave shit

  76. Jaymalls says:

    @Darius LMAO… you really brought up 50 Cent of all people??? This just shows not only your intellect, but your age. Get a life and stop dick riding. 50 Cent just started his philanthropy work a few months, to a year ago. The only other thing he did was give out turkeys and throw BBQs for the kids in Queens a handful of times before this SK scheme. Who the fuck sells energy shots to feed starving children??? Really?? nah… really though?? You know what that is called…. EXPLOITATION at its finest!.

  77. Darius says:

    @Daman

    Your comprehension skills are poor. I never said bringing the Nets to BK isn’t gonna create gonna jobs. I never said Hov didn’t donate to charities. I never knocked him for being successful. That’s 0/3. It becomes 0/4 when I already addressed the silly myth that Nas doesn’t do anything for the community (I mean, really, you serious).

    I’d give you a proper rebuttal but I genuinely don’t think that comment of yours was worthy. Give me something else and I might consider.

  78. Darius says:

    @Jaymalls

    I’m 24, and I don’t see that as being a good thing or a bad thing. It’s something that can’t be changed.

    Also, I think bringing 50 into this doesn’t reflect a poor intellect, it shows that i can acknowledge a good cause when I see one, considering I have never ever been a fan of 50’s music.

    As for the manner that 50 supports charities, well, have a look at the World Food Progromme’s list of foundations that aid countries in need and the way they do it, and you’ll see plenty of companies with very non-common products that provides the manner for the aid to go through. Who cares whether it’s energy shots or dildos, it is still providing aid.

    Exploitation ? I thought for a second that too. Then as a result of it, I read his previous interviews, I read that book of his (50th law) and saw he always had that hunger to support in him. Either way, even if someone has a gun to his head and is forcing him to do this SK thing, it doesn’t make it any less meaningful. You know why? Because whether it’s genuine or publicity, it doesn’t make a difference to the kid that’s getting fed as a result of this.

  79. getReal says:

    fred hampton died on december 4, jay was born on december 4, so I’m guessing that was something Jay was somewhat proud of, sure it was a sad, violent occurance, but still thats something to take in stride and that is what jay did. I think the lesson Fred jr. needs to learn from this is to never be quick to judge, because you never know whats in another mans heart……

  81. Y U MAD says:

    @daman and Jaymalls

    You totally dont get Darius’s point. To say Jay does more than Nas for Black people is to say Oprah does more for minorities than Al sharpton simply off the fact that Oprah showers people with gitfs more. The question is who stand up more when it comes to awareness? We aint talking about showering kids with books, bringing Nets to Brocklyn,.. and call that doing more! NAH!. If one opens Shawn Carter Foundtaion.. thats cool, we applaud that, but what are you teaching those kids at that foundation? Thats Christopher Columbus was a great man who discoverd America, probable! We can only say Jay is doing more when his foundation start teaching kids that we have to stand up against prejudice and equality.. which it probable doesnt- judging from Jay Z’s lyrics and the Corporate world mindset he believes in. which Nas is completely not all about. Nas educate youth via his rhymes, consitsently through jis who carreer.. the homie went toe to toe with Bill Oreally on naming his album N***, for awareness sake! Something Jay will never do.. never. Knowledge is power at the end of the day, which explain why Nas and 2 pac are acclaimed legends in the black society.

  82. Y U MAD says:

    @daman and Jaymalls

    You totally dont get Darius’s point. To say Jay does more than Nas for the black community is to say Oprah does more for minorities than Al sharpton simply off the fact that Oprah showers the minority with gitfs and money more than Al. The question is who stand up more when it comes to prejudice and social inequality awareness? Thats the BIG question.

    As the brother Jaysmalls stated by bring up 50Cent, you played your hand and showed your age.
    That SK energy drink is a sham of a product. Selling high fructose energy drinks to people who are already prone to diabetes, HBP, etc.? Doesn’t really fit the bill. It’s all wrapped in the guise of raising money for Africa…if that was the case, he could have just donated the money out right. I’m sure a couple mill could provide A LOT being that these people in these regions are fed rice and boat loads of it. Don’t think they are sending over poultry, beef or pork. They’re sending non-perishables.
    But I digress from that POV bc who am I to tell someone how to spend their money.

    Fred Hampton Jr is a buffoon and a blowhard. What has he done in and WITH his father’s legacy??
    He doesn’t even have an organization that operative. The gov’t would give him tax breaks if he ran a non-profit that benefitted the inner city of Chicago…but this is not the case. But him dissing Jay is a red herring. You can see if coming from a mile away. Mr. Hampton probably WANTS or TRIED to do what I just aforementioned BUT it’s failed bc he has poorly laid plans, inadequate & educated staff, etc. He probably has approached the Jays, Ye’s, Puff’s of the hiphop world for funding but a cat isn’t gonna give you money bc you come from a legacy. What’s your plan for the money? How will it benefit the community? Who’s your comptroller? Will the city provide tax breaks? What’s the 3, 6 year plan? Oh there’s isn’t one? you’re working on it? Ok..get back to me when it’s done…
    Mumbles to self…”Fk these uppity negros…” They are all corporate slaves….
    It’s funny as SOON as someone makes it they are corporate puppets or slave to the man…GTFOH!

    Now for future reference 50Cent and JayZ and Nas, etc only have 2 things blatantly in common, they’re black and from NYC. After that ALL comparisons stop! I respect 50s rises but that’s about it.
    He’s wrethched and his negativity has isolated him from the rest of raps/hip-hop elite NOT too mention he lack of real lyrical skills.

    Addendum –
    The 48th and 50th Law Of Power books are both shams! Utterly and completely. I attempted to read the 48th laws of power about 12yrs ago and found it complete void. In essence it teaches you to be sinister, backstabbing, vapid, selfish and ruthless…These aren’t good qualities to exhibit. You don’t always have to try to haggle or get over on people to get by.

    I’m getting pissed off RR not posting my shit! Too much truth for this site!

  86. Y U MAD says:

    @Vee i took that as a rhetorical question.

  87. Jaymalls says:

    Al Sharpton… Really??? 1st it was 50 Cent… know your using Al Sharpton as an example. Com ON!!!!!!

    Al hasn’t stood for shit since the early 90’s… He is another person who realized that creating shock value, off the back of minorities, will get him more press.. More press -> results in better face & name recognition -> which results to more money. Same as 50 Cent.. his career was based off hard work but mostly SHOCK VALUE. If he didn’t get shot 9x and didn’t talk about it for 3 albums straight, no one would know who 50 Cent was.. materfact, there would be no 50 Cent!

    Back to the topic at hand… Comparing Oprah’s philanthropy work to Al Sharptons’ or even their impacts on the community is just blasphemous. Do you know how many females, not even African-american females, she inspires every hour she is on this earth. Do you know how many walls she knocked down for “US” (Men & Women Included)??? Come ON… who the fuck you got feeding you these weak ass rebuttals bredren??

    P.S. Im 22

  88. Statdefine says:

    @Darius and whoever else.

    This is the problem. There is no need to pit artist against artist and compare who is doing more. First of all, no artist has any obligation to do anything of anyone. Thus, anyone that takes or money should be applauded.

    I don’t get it, I really don’t. I applaud Nas and any other artist who continue to talk about the struggle. However, what’s the point of talking about the struggle if we don’t applaud the people who make it out/wan out of the struggle. I mean isn’t that the whole point?

    We talk about how unfair the world is because we think it should be fair. We talk about the lack of opportunities because we think there should be opportunities. Yet, we see someone who gets an opportunity, who makes it to the world that we as blacks have been locked out of for so long, or have had to scratch and claw to make it there and we have a problem with it?

    I mean I dig not forgetting about the ills that effect us as a society but I thought ultimately we wanted things to get better. It’s like we’re mad they won’t let us in the door yet we hold on to being on the outside b/c that’s all we know.

    Sidebar: I don’t care which rapper has done more…However I take issue with your Jay-Z doesn’t really do anything type attitude.

    He did a 9-11 benefit concert
    Worked with the UN to make sure people in Africa had access to clean water
    His Black Album concert was a benefit concert
    He donated half-a-million dollars when Katrina happened.
    He has a scholarship foundation that puts kids through college.

    I mean what’s the problem with that…

  89. Yat says:

    This is fucking insane.weather your assassinated or sucome to cancer,YOU DIE!
    Sounds like an excuse for an insecure cat to have a little shine.

  90. KYOD says:

    “Darius” is one of those people that wants a celebrity to do an interview tour with every donation.

    Jay Z is ballin’ on an entirely different level than Nas, you can’t possibly compare the donations that they make. Jay Z is worth half a billion dollars, his style of donation is to set up an entire charity or throw a multi-million dollar fundraiser and then move on to something else for the time being. Does that make the charity any less effective or less important? De-value the million dollars? Of course not. Nas, on the other hand, is dangerously close to broke, but he has a rabid cult of fans, so it’s much more logical and useful for him to use his celebrity to leverage attention or donations to a particular cause. Neither method is more effective than the other. Neither is more admirable than the other. Both give more to our communities than any of us ever have. Now quit crying about it.

    Wait so who discovered America?

  92. County of Kings says:

    @darius
    i respect your opinion on the subject and i guess we just agree to disagree.
    i just feel, i would prefer nas to make a difference by first focusing on his own affairs and building his own brand. he cant help me when he sitting here with me. ppl do alot of talkin talkin talkin. we need money, business, jobs, opportunities. nas mishandles his own affairs to such a degree that when he is kicking knowledge i hear him, but i brush him off.
    u cant change anything from where we stand, but from where jayz stands he can make a big impact. and when i say jayz inspires more black youth, i mean in the same way obama has. just his presence alone.
    kids aspire to be rich, famous, married to a beautiful black woman, and still not lose touch with where u come from. kids want that, shit i want that.
    nobody wants to follow nas footsteps, of bad business, bad finance, failed marriages, years of hard work with no real mark or impact on society to match his lyrical talent.
    nas is almost looked at as a waste of talent, pac capitalized on his passion for change, and understood he still needed to be a PLATINUM selling artist to make a change, if he wouldve been digital underground his whole life no one would know the prolific words pac had in his heart.

    just my opinion tho, respect

  93. bigshorty says:

    I think that Fred Hampton Jr. knows that Jay-Z thinks he is “shouting out” the legacy of Chairman Fred
    Hampton Sr. but Charirman Fred’s legacy is nothing to be toyed or played with. Chairman Fred was only 21 when he was assassinated by the Chicago PD because he was a true revolutionary who was a threat to the white supremacist power structure of Chicago and the US. Rappers throw out names like Assata Shakur, Geronimo Pratt (who was Tupac’s godfather), Mutulu Shakur (Pac’s stepfather) and the descendants of these freedom fighters are supposed to be honored? Fuck that.

    Feeding children, educating the Black community, mediating gang wars, politicizing the Black community as to how to improve their social conditions was some of the things that Chariman Fred accomplished BEFORE the age of 21. Jay-Z is a multi millionaire and is not a threat to anyone or anything. Jay wouldn’t put shit on the line for his people, and that’s cool, stay in your lane. Chairman Fred risked and gave his life to improve the conditions of his people and his community. Chicago is a literal war zone with children and adults dying everyday and Fred Jr. is on the front line just like his father was back in the day. Instead of slick lines and metaphors, why doesn’t Jay reach out to Fred Jr, and offer some assistance to the programs that would benefit the community as opposed to just name checking him in a rhyme? The Black August festival raises money for community programs, political prisoners and education every year. Artists like Common, Black Thought , Mos Def, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli always perform and contribute free of charge. Has anyone ever seen Jay at this event? Nah, he too scared his white massa would disapprove of him associating wtih them “radical niggas”. If Fred Hampton Sr. was physically here, HE WOULD STILL BE FIGHTING THIS CORRUPT SYSTEM AND JAY WOULDN’T BE SEEN NOWHERE NEAR HIM. Fred Jr. knows this and any conscious individual knows this.

    I acknowledge Jay-Z talent and intellect, but many see through the bullshit. It’s safe to “shout out” someone when they are no longer here. Assata Shakur is still a fugitive from the Cointelpro programs phony charges and the US gov’t is still trying to extradite and imprison her for false charges. Common, Mos Def, Black Thought, Dead Prez and others have supported her cause to the detriment of their career opportunities and Common even met with her when he traveled to Cuba. Let’s see if Jigga Man champions her cause with a “shout out”

    to my brother who responded to my comments there is not much about the history of this country I don’t know… I do live here….. Black History month is coming soon – – – better start reading and learning…….

  95. Ryot says:

    Hey Jr., has there ever been a point where a person was assassinated and not died? Stupid fuck.

  96. the One says:

    @???
    Very well said! My man…

  97. hiphop&life says:

    I never heard Jay-Z dissrespect any iconic figgure in any genre of history if they were well known or unsung. they all get the same recognition from Jay-z Now how many rap artist can you honestly say have the power to entertain and educate? In the past a lot of people have tried to use Jay-Z as a way to get that quick 15 sec of fame in the spot light. As for Mr. Fred Jr., you only get 10 sec for this dumb shit. sorry oldhead. And as far as Jay-z being a corporate tool, i must disagree. It looks more like he has the right tools to be a black man and a serious factor in corporate America.

  98. ready66 says:

    you guys that are commenting on jay is this and jay is that need to quit has nothing to do with the fact that a large percent of our population did not know of fred hampton and to the person who said its a shame, blame our school system not jay,as a black man he just schooled a whole lot more people than our schools did and once again black tearing down other blacks,when he was teaching,never satisfied you so called educated mf’s make me sick yall are the ones holding us back,i was going to goolge fred hampton to find out more until i saw his son making a bafoon out of his self playing right into there hands you sir are a discrace to blacks everywhere this is why were losing,he was rapping you cant put all that in a rhyme you only get maybe 16 to 24 bars,and you wnt him to detail the whole event come on you just discredited your father
