Wiz Khalifa Covers Complex
Trying to maintain balance, Wiz walks the tight rope on the October/November issue of Complex. Below is an excerpt on what may be the reason for O.N.F.I.C.‘s delay. Full story here. Photoshoot after the jump.
What does command Wiz’s full attention is his upcoming album. He and everyone in his camp feel confident about O.N.I.F.C.—everyone, apparently, except for Atlantic Records.
“Atlantic likes O.N.I.F.C.,” says Wiz. “But they want more obvious singles because that’s what sells it for them. My belief in the record is what sells it to me. It’s not a conflict. You just have to communicate so everybody understands it.”
Wiz is looking for that delicate balance. “When you’re working with other people, you figure out how much you do for them and how much you do for yourself,” he says. “You can’t just be an artist fighting for your opinion and that’s it. The label has to understand artists. I wanted to make Rolling Papers when I made Rolling Papers, now it’s time for O.N.I.F.C. Now we’re going to do it exactly how I want to do it to see how that works. It can’t be one-sided.”
As much as I don’t really like his music, he is dead-on with that explanation as that’s how labels work. It’s a business at the end of the day.
nice. it’s a shame labels are over-controlling when it comes to an artists 1st album in the past couple of years. ie big sean, wiz, cole, wale etc
I hate record labels that controls artists music because of their control. Albums get pushed back or an album can sound completely different then an artist depict it to be.
Complex be having them DOPE covers though
Maybe the label realized this dude has no diversity and can’t make a song about more than one subject (no need to list what that subject is). He should take a break from making music and get into weight training, shout out to that tight rope for being as thick as Wiz’s arms.
Cosign @Trillionaire. This cover is fucking dope
maaaaaaaaaaaaaan! Sounds like some one’s album is never coming out.
Wiz spoke some truth on here. its sad though when labels have more power than the artist. Maybe going independent is really the way to go.
So there’s a building in every corner?
