Lupe went against the grain on the second single of Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album Pt. On the didactic “Bitch Bad”, he addresses hip-hop misogyny with sensitivity and parental care. On the first and second verses, he explains the side effects of the B-Word, but by the third, his parable falls on deaf ears, “Bad mean good to her, she really nice and smart/But bad mean bad to him, bitch don’t play your part.” Bitch bad. Song good.
I respect the idea of this song, but I didn’t play it or buy it.

Lupe’s most preachy song on his most preachy album is one of the best 10 singles of the year? Honestly, it’s a positive song, good concept, but really poorly executed. That’s why Spin clowned the song and video.

Never heard this song before now. Mad respect to Lupe for making something with an actual message.
Good concept, just not a good song. Nothing about it makes you want to play it again. And I still haven’t seen the video. Just off the preview pic. Looks so corny.

The video, like this album, and Lupe in general is faux-deep.
There’s a reason why it’s got the fewest spins of any single off this album. If you want to add a positive song for the sake of diversifying the list, Nas “Daughters” is a better choice…more original concept, better executed, more sincere, better production, better in general.
Well it is corny. And no, I can’t stand to hear it after giving it a reluctant first listen. Too preachy, even if the message is right then it has to be told by someone you respect and doesn’t preach this bad

@Slim Baller, they haven’t done best albums yet. Prob tomorrow. GKMC and LIG better go 1 and 2 to ensure RR’s credibility, although they might switch them to stir up controversy…
I’m sure this album will make the list. I’m a huge Lupe fan (paid for every one of his albums, including this one) but this album was Grammy-nominated basura. At least L.A.S.E.R.s had “All Black Everything” and “Words I Never Said.” This album had a Pete Rock redo, an unoriginal pop duet, and this lame attempt at being deep as his singles, just like his “deep” all black album cover. More Enemy of the State, The Cool, F&L Lupe and less of this crap, please.
The concept is sort of like how YN uses nigga, Yeah Boy!

Good choice, add some diversity to the list, it can’t just be all Bandz, Jeezy, and Meek Mill songs. No matter what you thought of the song, it played it’s part and really stood out amongst the rubble when it was spinning just because the message really shone through.

“Dear Mama” “Crossroads” “All That I Got is You” “U.N.I.T.Y” were all concept songs too. The difference is they were also good songs, not just good concepts and lyrics. You can’t just get props because you’re going against the grain. You’ve got to do it and make it good music at the same damn time.

You didn’t think this was a decent record? It had wit (e.g. the “i’m killing these bitches” double entendre part of the hook), was cool to put that concept over booming 808s (a nice artistic contrast), flow was on point, lyrically it was on point. it’s at least an interesting record for the first listen, afterwards maybe not so much. Wasnt the best record of his career, but as far as singles go, i have no problem with this being the 10th best single of the year, not like it’s top 5 or anything

If we want more substantive/concept records to diversify the list how about Nas “Daughters” or Slaughterhouse “Goodbye” or Kendrick Lamar “Swimming Pools” All better songs than this.

He told an intriguing story about the role the word ‘bitch’ plays in our culture & the way people perceive mothers & girlfriends because of it.
I mean, it wasn’t like he was screaming ‘stop calling women bitches” throughout the 3 verses. it was for more subtle & far more effective.
