Andre 3000 Explains Tour Jumpsuits

Silent Protest.

During Outkast’s summer festival run, Andre 3000 sported black jumpsuit emblazoned with quotes, phrases, and a “sold” price tag. In an interview with The FADER, 3 Stacks explained the motivation behind his get-up.

On his jumpsuits:
“I didn’t start the tour like, Yeah, I’m gonna do all of these suits. My first Coachella show, which was a horrible show, I wore something like [my outfit right now]. I didn’t know what to wear on stage, so it was my overalls…Honestly, just, you know—I didn’t wanna do the tour. We hadn’t performed in 10 years. It was old songs. I’m like, How am I gonna present these songs? I don’t have nothing new to say. So I was like, maybe I can start saying new stuff while doing these old songs. It became a theme where I was more excited about this than the actual show. This is fun, running out in these.”

On the “SOLD” tag he wore on tour:
“I felt weird about going out on stage and doing it again. I felt like people would be like, ‘Y’all are doing all these festivals, y’all are just doing it for money,’ And I felt like a sell-out, honestly. So I was like, if I’m in on the joke, I’ll feel cool about it. It was a decision. I’m 39, I got a 17-year-old kid, and I gotta support certain things. And my partner Big Boi is like, ‘This is a great thing for all of us.’ So I felt like there was a certain sell-out in a way, because I didn’t wanna do it—I knew I was doing it for a reason. So maybe if I’m telling people, ‘I am selling out,’ then it’s not as bad as pretending. It’s being honest about it like, ‘Shit, I did these songs when I was 17 and I’m out here pedaling them now.’ But it’s the honest thing, that’s what it is.”

An artist with integrity, no I’m not judging him on other parts of his life, that is a rare thing. So many of these guys are just into the commerce of it, making album after album because they are locked into contracts, or have the opportunity to cash in. But it is what it is, a commercial industry.

3 Stacks depresses me whenever I hear his perspective on his career, Outlast, being old, performing old songs. It just sucks to know this amazing MC doesn’t think he has anything else to offer this world with his music. He doesn’t believe in his own perspective, so how can his fans?

Just stop over thinking the shit.

    1. Honestly says:

I feel you but I think it’s more so being considerate. He is an artist first & doesn’t want to shuck & jive if his heart & creativity isn’t behind the art. For him, performing songs from decades ago is devoid of artistic meaning & thus he doesn’t have motivation to do it. While most of us would accept any old thing from him, he holds himself to a higher standard & I think that’s understandable from an artist’s perspective

      1. ilexx says:

I can agree with how you see it. My problem is, if u hold yourself to a higher standard but that higher standard stiffles your own creativity then what’s the point?

There are a lot of people that hold them self to a higher standard and the same level of artistic integrity that do so much more than 3 stacks.

Take Kanye for example, dude definitely tries to push his creativity on every level. Even if some of his newer stuff isn’t necessarily shit that I love or am dying to listen to again, at least he is creating, at least he is letting his fans in on his perspective, letting them know where he is at mentally and emotionally. With Andre 3k, all I hear is that he doesn’t think he is cool, he doesn’t think his perspective is cool, he doesn’t have love for this or he doesn’t want to do that, all while his fans just want another sixteen that’s dope or a new song with him and Big Boi or just some musical output. You realize he and Big Boi could put out 16 bar verses each and maybe trade 8 bars each and put together a hook and the fans would go nuts because they have been waiting but dude isn’t even willing to do that. He ain’t got put on an act for a check but fucking do it for your fans, if you don’t have that passion or drive, go find it and come back with something.

I am just gonna keep it real with you, I would rather not hear another interview from dude shitting on his legacy period. Cause at this point, I get it, “You don’t love the music anymore. Ok cool, good luck to ya in all your other endeavors.” That’s where I am wid it.

        1. Honestly says:

Yes of course I realize he could sign a port-a-potty & it would go platinum, his exact point is that he doesn’t want to do that. He considers going on tour strictly for the money the same as selling out because he doesn’t love performing old songs, so it’s a hollow artistic act in his opinion.

You act as if “go find it” is an easy solution to realizing passion, and it clearly isn’t.

I’d love even a half-assed Outkast project at this point but that doesn’t remove the human element…the fact that dude is a person & artist and has every right to dictate how his art is conceived. If he isn’t motivated, or tries and his efforts are less inspired or below the threshold of quality he holds himself to, it’s a sad thing but I can’t blame the man.

I know people at large (not you specifically) have trouble accepting this simple fact but no one on Earth owes you anything, even your favorite musician.

(even though I agree…shit sucks, but he blessed us for years, I’d rather appreciate what once was than d-ride the man for not doing more, he’s already a legend)

          1. ilexx says:

I hear you. I agree that they really dont owe fans anything. I would hope they did do an Outlast album that it wouldn’t be halfassed, like if u do it then do it right but it doesnt even have to be that, just give us some music, give big boi a dope guest feature on his solo shit here and there or something. I just wish he would find some motivation, some reason to create and put it out there because one way or another his perspective is worth something.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why you don’t see many rap duos with longevity. Big Boy mad as fuck right now like, “this nigga fuckin up my money”

    weirdo

  12. Public Hairs says:

I don’t agree with his logic at all. Old songs? Mofo yall havent made music in forever, people WANT to see yall perform your CLASSICS! Idk how the fuck he sees this as a bad thing. Who the fuck is sitting here saying “they doing it just for the money”?. Jesus Christ.

  13. NYComicBookGuy says:

Andre needs to chill with the “I’m too old to be rapping” shit. Outkast is important to hip-hop! Shit, he’s one of the few artists I actually want to hear right now. As long as he’s making dope music, that’s real and not copying what these new jacks are doing, then it’s all good. Hip-Hop needs real shit right now, more than ever!

  14. yorapper says:

I feel let down that the guy who placed no creative limits on himself when he was younger is placing them on himself not that he’s older. If there was anyone that would be able to make decent hip hop in their 40s, I thought it would be Andre 3000. It’s too bad self-doubt got the best of him.

  15. SickSongz says:

y is he thinking like this? dre 3000 lyrics will live beyond year 3000, he is still featured on new hit songs and is still relevant, he need to stop acting like he’s a nobody, make a solo hip hop album, and take the crown and be proud of it

  16. Mike Green says:

dude isn’t over thinking it at all really. think about it if you have 45 million dollars as a rapper and your 39 with sense why would you want to tour? Rih has about 90 million dollars whats the point after that. I’d actually go see the world and enjoy life

  17. bronxbillyunz says:

HE’S SAYIN IN PLAIN ENGLISH “I DIDN’T WANNA DO IT, BUT I HAVE BILLS & THE MONEY WAS RIGHT SO I DID IT”” – PERIOD — I USED TO LOVE HER – LIKE COMMON SAID ” BOY I TELL U , I MISS HER….”

  18. Perhaps Andre 3000 has outgrown the industry. Maybe just seeing things from a different perspective – 17 to 39 years of age, many become someone different over that course of time. He’s a well respected artist to many, I applaud his honesty.
