They gave him a million dollar advance and he signed a contract agreeing to fulfill certain obligations. Are they supposed to go out of business, because he didn’t have the common sense to realize he had entered into a legally enforceable contract and thus should stay out of trouble and focus instead on fulfilling his obligations?
We need to upgrade our thinking. Record labels are publicly traded companies, whose job it is to make a profit for their shareholders (some of whom are people investing their savings hoping for a return they can then spend during retirement). Take this L for not having the intelligence to realize that when you take money from a record label, they are entitled to make a return on their investment.
