Jermaine brought his ‘Dollar & A Dream 3’ tour to a close last night in L.A. During his performance, out K-Dot hit the stage for “Cartoons & Cereal”, “Alright” and “A Tale of 2 Citiez”. That joint album would be good right about now. Oh yeah, hi Rihanna.

These two are the ones pushing Hiphop forward back to the glory days. This era is filled with pop music, as well the loud beats with no substance, while Cole and Kendrick dramatically push it back to the soul of hiphop. Glad to see them winning

DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!
Drake is not in the conversation he went snot bubble.
I’m not a Drake fan but his impact in undeniable.
He has major impact in the suburban world, walk the streets and ask 10 niggas with headphones on what they listening to and I guarantee u not 1 will say Drake unless he got skinny jeans on, don’t get me wrong Drake is not bad he has cool songs like the track he did with Jeezy but most of his music is designed for women IMO that’s y niggas don’t fuck wit him like that. Dude has mad radio hits though, we might turn up to his records in the club but I can’t listen to him on a dailly basis. Cole and Kendrick’s catalogs are deep and they have the skills to back it. I can mix them in with Mobb Deep, Nas, Immortal Tech, Mos Def, Ghostface, Rakim, Common.etc in my playlist and they won’t sound outta place coz they stay on that lyrical shit.
K Dot is more lyrical than Cole but Jermaine is more fluent and relatable to the average person so they balance out for me.
Drake doesn’t have to be liked by fans of underground Hip Hop to be considered Hip Hop. If he can come to your city and fill up a stadium with people and do a bunch of rapping, he’s Hip Hop. You don’t necessarily have to like his rapping in order for him to be Hip Hop. Pop is just short for popular so yes Drake is “pop”, that don’t mean he aint Hip Hop.
Drake came to my city and I wasn’t interested in going to see him, he had an 85 – 90% white crowd of people and a 90 – 95% female fan base who could sing all of his hooks. Only reason I would have gone is to get pussy, Drake is a sell out he aint Hip Hop to me I’d rather listen to Clear Soul Forces. He’s not at that level lyrically, and he has never proven that he can be.
Ok cool, Drake could have all white female fans and not be on the same kinda lyrical level as like Jay Electronica but as an artist he is still Hip Hop. I mean he’s also R&B but he is rapping and when he wants to, he’s actually pretty good at it.
He’s an ok rapper man, he has good subject matter and his own lane but his skills are average.
Ok well his average skills is out here beasting on the entire music industry.
You’re talking about record sales again, most people aren’t out here trying to decipher lyrics they just wanna dance.
Even if Drake sold no records he would still be lyrical imo. Even in the aspect of making the kinda records Drake does, lyrically that is also a skill.
That is true but he wouldn’t be able to hang in a cypher.
Put him in a cypher and find out but even if he didn’t so what? Alot of people who are dope in cyphers can’t write songs.
At the end of the day it depends what you prefer, I prefer a thorough lyrical display over a hit record. Most people prefer to dance though, Nas would be able to hang because his lyrics go are so deep, so much so that he doesn’t have to rap double time, he could even just kick a story telling rap and the visual gymnastics are good enough to satisfy any crowd, but you wanna come into the cypher rapping about your ex girlfriend who didn’t believe you can make it, that’s some bullshit. Don’t nobody wanna hear that shit! ‘I drove in the snow for you’, fuck outta here nigga!
Its not about a hit or making dance records. If Nas was in a cypher he would kick bars in song writing form. Thats what Drake does. Now is Drake deep? No but why does he have to be deep? Some of the best rappers are not deep (Redman, Cam’ron, Ti, Jadakiss etc…). Its not about trying to rap like Kendrick and Cole, it would be iller to rap nothing like them. Again, at the core of “lyricism” is “song writing” skills. The extra stuff like metaphors, punches, entendres, etc… are added ingredients but for anybody thinking they can do what Drake does as far as lyrics are concerned? Try to do it yourself and you’ll find it does take “lyricism” to rap like Drake. It does take “lyricism” to write Draft Day, The Ride, Going In For Life, The Presentation, Too Much etc.. This aint a nigga that doesn’t have a grip on “lyricism”. Now is he Joell Ortiz so somebody like that? No but he don’t have to be.
The difference between Drake and Nas is if you take the beat away Nas still sounds dope but Drake sounds corny. Cam’ron is in your list, really?? No I think you’ve got it wrong at the core of lyricism is metaphors, entendres, wordplay, flow, technical ability, delivery.
When you’re in a cypher in the street you’re not trying to hear who’s got the best song you’re trying to hear who’s the most skillful rapper. That’s where real hip hop is at, if you can make good songs too that’s a bonus but if you can’t hang with the dude on the corner how can we respect your song. For example look up Lil Snupe vs Desean Jackson, Desean had some bars that would sound very good on a hit song and sell a lot of records but he was dominated in that battle.
Ok well you think “real Hip Hop” is about hanging in a cypher on the corner and making good songs is just a bonus? Well then you can’t understand Drake’s “lyricism” then. Yes Cam’ron was on my list of rappers that are not deep. If you can’t see why he’s a lyricist as well then oh well. I think you got lyricism in a box of wordplays and rhyme schemes? Writing an actual good song takes lyricism fam and unfortunately alot rappers on the corner in a cypher have not learned that. You may wanna go back to some of those early mixtape verses from Drake cause if he said some of those verses in a cypher fools would say that shit was crazy. I brought up Nas for a reason, alot of those wordplays people praise so much, Nas barely does at all and still he’s a lyricist. Nas is not a metaphor expert, an entendre expert, or an expert in flow, technical patterns or delivery and thats partly why he’s one of the best lyricist off all time. Because of things he’s NOT doing lyrically, which only helps highlight what he is doing lyrically… Not that he’s lacking but there are different forms of “lyricism”. Sometimes not trying to sound like Slaughterhouse works better for some rappers. However with Drake Its clear he’s skilled at what he’s doing lyrically and its not no abc123 nonsense like alot of other rappers.
In other words Nas like Drake rap about their life. Its not always about wordplays and while alot of other lyrical miracles flip a bunch of words, there is hardly any rhymes about they actual life and thats where a artist like Drake capitalizes lyrically.
Nas being one of the greatest lyricists of all time might not be able to hang in a cypher. His style aint designed for that, he’s not a bar expert like that but he’s a lyricist. Its like you expect Drake to be able to do master all forms of lyricism before you recognize the style he uses himself as being lyrical?
J Cole is a sell out too its just people pick and choose who they allow to sell out and when its ok for certain people. Cole makes some poppy bullshit which is reason why he feels he let Nas down but Lupe comes out with singles like Show Goes On and Words I Never Said and gets hell for making “pop” music.
That’s why I call them mainstream underground, coz they all sold out to a certain level but nobody doubts that they could kill most underground rappers lyrically because they have the skill. When did Drake ever prove himself as a lyrical beast, name 1 song.
Every rapper on the mainstream sold out. Musically you have to shape your records in a certain way to commercial play. Thats a fact. They all sold out. Why does Drake have to prove himself as a lyrical beast? He really doesn’t. I’d say Drake is a lyrical beast imo because if he wasn’t he wouldn’t be where he is. Id say songs like The Calm, The Ride and Thank Me Now have their elements of great lyricism but no matter what you say about Drake, we can talk about when Drake was underground doing freestyles over Barry Bonds and Mr Slow Flow (Asthma Team) but it won’t matter cause people feel like they gotta like Drake in order to give him his lyrical credit? No, you aint gotta like Drake in order for him to be lyrical. Thats the point I’m making.
Does Drake have a Rigamortis in his catalog, no emotional shit just raw skills.
No, because it would be better for Drake to not have a Rigamortis. Thats Kendrick’s song, its not for Drake to do that. Kendrick doesn’t have bravado songs like Tuscan Leather because thats not for him to do. I get what your saying but the best thing Drake got going for him is that he doesn’t rap like Kendrick and Cole. I’m out
Because he can’t do that.
He shouldn’t, Drake trying to be like Kendrick and Cole would be wack.

fuck the radio nigga
fuck the radio nigga
Y’all keep putting Kendrick in the conversation of best out ..but brah numbers prove you ain’t on drake or cole level
Cole aint on Drake’s level either and actually no rapper is on Drake’s level. As far as the ratio of high sells per release on a song for song basis, there is no rapper on Drakes level. He had 21 songs on Billboards top 25 at some point all off one album that was released by surprise. There is no rapper on Drake’s level.
That’s because Drake is a pop star who ditched lyrics for sales, listen to what he’s saying in his song with The Game, he’s admitting he sold out and dumbed down his lyrics to double his dollars. Still, he’s stolen flows from Big Sean and Migos and he has never given us a display to show that he can truly lyrically destroy Kendrick, Lupe, King Los or any rapper with real skill.
Ok but so what? Thats all I’m saying. Every rapper who has ever crossed over dumbed down their lyrics so thats not really a new concept imo. He doesn’t have to give anybody a lyrical display. I mean I’ve heard him rapping on those time and place songs (6PM, 5AM, 9AM) and I mean thats lyrical imo. He don’t have to rap like Slaughterhouse.
I think Kendrick could beat Crooked I in a cypher, but he can also make songs like Backstreet Freestyle, but people don’t fuck with him coz they know he gets busy! It’s just a change of gear to him. Drake has never shown us that he can take it there so how can we say he’s on that level of MC, he isn’t.
I think Kendrick would get destroyed in a cypher with Crooked I. Drake doesn’t need to show you any level of MC shit cause if you haven’t seen it by now you never will. He did a song with Kanye, Wayne and Em and his entire verse was a quotable and he went first. From a lyrical standpoint thats great lyricism and if you can’t see why then even if Drake made Exhibit C you wouldn’t see it. No matter what Drake says, Hip Hop heads aint gonna give him his credit lyrically and thats cause they don’t like Drake period but if they was on the same song as him he’d probably gas em.
Drake is just deep to women, what did he say that made you scratch your head in awe? First name greatest, Last name ever, uh!?
Why does he have to be deep? He really doesn’t. Busta Rhymes, Fabolous and Ghostface don’t make me scratch my head either but they lyricists. I’m done
All those rappers you mentioned are better than Drake, Fabolous might be the best punchline rapper ever, Ghostface is mad lyrical and has one of the most unique styles. Busta can rap 4x times faster than Drake and that is a difficult skill to master, all Drake has going for him is his subject matter and making bitches catch feelings.
I agree. Drake is lucky he came in the era of dumb downed music. He’s more of a pop star than a rapper but he makes good music. With that bein said, he will never be a better RAPPER than Cole or Kendrick his entire career
Cole and Kendrick are also pop stars and he doesn’t have to be better then them. It works out better for him if he’s not a better “rapper” then them. Tell Kendrick and Cole to write almost 100 hit songs in less then a decade (not because their hits but because writing them does take a kinda form of “lyricism”). Thats what Drake has done. At the core of “lyricism” is song writing but I bet if all three of them was one a track and it was about the best bars? I think Kendrick and Cole might underestimate just how intricately Drake puts those punches and entendre’s together… He might smash they verses.
No they aren’t, Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole could have made it any era of hiphop. Especially the 90’s era where their sound would be appreciated. If Drake was in the 90’s he would be in the same category as Justin Timberlake. Pop music is about hits, Hiphop is more about a body of work. Tell Drake to make a critically acclaimed album like Kendeick had done 3 times back to back then call him the best. It’s hit records vs. Classics and in hiphop classics win.
Kendrick and Cole aint pop stars? Of course they are. Cole was on tour with Jayz, Rihanna and Drake before his first album came out and Kendrick was just on a song with Taylor Swift. Now I know people have different opinions on “pop stars” but at the end of the day, “Pop” is music that is listened to and accepted by popular culture. If Kendrick and Cole woulda survived in the 90s so what? Silk The Shocker, Mase and Missy survived in the 90s too. Drake doesn’t have to make any body of works of nothing because if what he has already done doesn’t qualify as a body of work then nothing he does will. Jay Electronica hs no body of work but is he a lyricist? Yes. He doesn’t have to make a classic either. The “classic” is dead. Now you can say any album is classic the same year it comes out. “Classic” doesn’t mean anything in this era of Hip Hop. If So Far Gone aint classic enough then nothing is. Like I get what your trying to say but having if a rapper never puts out an album or a classic that doesn’t mean he’s not a lyricist. If all 4 members of Slaughterhouse never make any classic that does not mean they not lyricists.
You misinterpret me, I mean Drakes success is always going to be on the billboards and Kendrick will always have critically acclaimed albums. Kendrick was rapping on Taylor Swifts song but Hold on we’re going home is a straight pop record by any definition. And in the game of hip hop an outstanding critically acclaimed album like GKMC outweighs any billboard record.
So what if Drake is successful, that don’t really mean he’s not a lyricist. So what if Kendrick has critically acclaimed albums. Drake doesn’t need anybody acclaiming his shit if the people enjoy the music cause thats more important. So what if Hold On We’re Going Home was a pop record? The nigga openly calls himself a singer. Lauryn Hill was also a singer who sold music in the pop world but that don’t mean she aint a lyricist. Again, albums getting critically acclaims means whatever you want it to mean but if you put Cyhi on a beat he’s gonna drop bars. He has no album and isn’t critically acclaimed by shit because “lyricism” doesn’t depend on critical acclaim. In regards to Drake and the Billboards? Its not that he’s on the Billboard. Its the number of times in a short period, 1 2 3 100….. Thats impressive. However Drake success doesn’t mean he’s any less the lyricist. Its like you wanna compare Drake to Kendrick? The more not like Kendrick he is the better. The game already has a Kendrick so no need for two.
No, you made a claim that Drake is on another level than any rapper because of his billboard success and I said that’s not true. Yes he makes good music but Kendrick and J. Cole are better rappers than him and in hip hop critically acclaimed albums carry more weight than billboard success. All I’m saying
Ok so then your saying Kendrick and Cole have the same level of success on Billboard as Drake? Thats the “level” I’m talking about. Your crazy to put so much weight on critical acclaim. Critical acclaim means how many dickriders do you have writing for industry publications? Thats all it means. If Kendrick dropped some straight trash, nobody would be able to say it is because their jobs are based on dickriding whoever is the most popular. The fact you can look up Drake’s stats online and not see that as a rapper this nigga is a fuckin alien, is ridiculous. There has never been a rapper in the history of Hip Hop culture to ever do so much in such a little time just based on hit records. That in itself is so beyond crazy, I don’t know how anybody in their right mind is equating that with Kendrick and Cole. My comments is not about out rapping Kendrick and Cole, your stuck there and thats why you can’t see the point I’m making here. There is no comparison to Drake’s level unless you gonna bring up early 50 Cent and Eminem. People are saying he don’t rap as good as Kendrick and Cole? I’m saying thats probably a very good thing for Drake to not rap like or sound like Kendrick and Cole…
I get what you’re saying but you’re not being fair to Kendrick and Cole. According to your argument no matter the type of fantastic album anyone in hiphop makes it doesn’t compare to Drake’s billboard success. That’s where we will just have to disagree, because making GKMC is a better accomplishment than having “What’s your name” with Rihanna as a number one song. Drake is impressive with the fact that he got a lot of hit records in a short period but for you to say that critical acclaim doesn’t matter isn’t hiphop, that’s pop. The worst part is the album/mixtape (IYRTITL) that got him the billboard success was so average, probably his worst project, so why would I care if every song was on the billboard.
We were talking about Drake being on a certain “level” correct? So with that in mind, his billboard chart success does come in to play. Is it about who can rap the best? No, is it about whatever Kendrick is doing with his albums? No. When you talking about the “level” Drake is on, you have to bring up the extraordinary numbers he’s putting up because how can you leave that outta the equation? If a nigga comes out and sells that many millions of records in less then 5 years? That is just ridiculous, there is no way people can just ignore that. IMO no critical acclaim doesn’t matter. Critical acclaim means a bunch of industry people got the writers of publications to write good things about you… Thats all it is. Its hard enough to have 1 hit record, when you have a nigga with 100? That is just crazy. Its not just about being on the charts, its the ridiculous amount of times Drake is on it in a very short period of time. I’m sorry but what rapper is on “that level”? There is no album you could ever make to be on that level unless your Michael Jackson making Thriller. Thats not a knock against Kendrick and Cole but they not on Drake’s level at this point. Like breh, Drake is selling records (on a song for song basis) on a veteran kinda level and his first album just came out 5 years ago. That is craziness. Oh and btw, I thought his last album was garbage as fuck. I hated that shit but that just doesn’t change his stats.
You’re wrong again. First of all I’m a Lil Wayne fan and its a fact that Lil Wayne has the most platinum singles than any rapper ever meaning the most hit songs ever. Do I think MBDTF is also a great accomishment in music? Yes, it’s a ground breaking album. Nas is considered a GOAT because of illmatic alone. HipHop was FOUNDED off of critical acclaim. What billboard records did Tupac and Biggie break? And what Drake is doing is great but his highest selling album is Take Care going 2x platinum and but that’s been done multiple times. You’re making it sound like he made Reasonable Doubt. So I guess Mackelmore is better than Kendrick for having #1 songs throughout 2012 when GKMC dropped? No, hell no, it doesn’t matter Flo Rida and Pitbull also have crazy billboard records every year but you’d have to be crazy to put them before Real MC’s with classic body’s of work. Drake is accomplished, but if you’re argument on his level is billboard success because of IYRITL then it’s insignificant. That mixtape won’t stand the test of time. Every legend in hiphop is a legend because of classic albums/projects, not billboard and if that doesn’t matter to you that’s fine but don’t discredit Cole and K.Dot
Hip Hop was not founded on critical acclaim. The fact you think it was is ridiculous. I wish you could see the people who actually give these albums critical acclaim. It be people who would’ve never even listened to the music if it wasn’t their job. Hip Hop was founded on the elements of Hip Hop culture. Critical acclaim is based on publications writing about the music. Again, my comments were about where Drake is at in such a short period of time. Now if Wayne has more number ones then Drake thats cool too but what Drake has already done is crazy. YOUR talking about albums but if you read my comments you would see I’m not talking about Drake’s albums. Your talking about albums as if you wanna get off the subject of my comments. When were talking about Drake’s “level”? Drake is not where he’s at just because he made Take Care. Again, YOUR comments are about critical acclaim and albums, NONE of my comments were about Drake’s critical acclaim or his albums… Were talking about “Drakes level”. Drake took Cole and Kendrick on tour before they albums came out because Drake draws in three crowds at a time (Rap, Pop and R&B) hence the reason he been touring in stadiums from the gate. Drake took them on tour because he’s on a higher level, they can’t take Drake anywhere because he’s already been there and been there on a much higher level.
Now you can keep bringing up albums cause I hear you but NOTHING I said about Drake is about his albums at all and NOTHING I said is about Kendrick’s or Cole’s albums so your bringing up things that I wasn’t even talking about in the first place. And please stop with the critical acclaim shit cause thats nonsense to me. I’m not gonna like something just because somebody else said I should. Thats exactly the purpose of critical acclaim. An artist gets hot and publications trade critical acclaim for more access and exclusivity with the artist in terms of interviews and photos.
I’m talking about the critical acclaim of albums, you’re talking about sales. If sales and billboard records dictates who is on another level for you then you will always put Drake ahead of Kendrick no matter what groundbreaking Classic he drops. Let’s agree to disagree
I know your talking about critical acclaim and thats something I wasn’t talking about so why your talking about it, I mean I guess your just really into critical acclaim or something. I brought up sells and billboard but there is reason for that to which I’ve repeated now a few times. I think the songs he had on billboard recently were wack but there are reasons why I brought them up. Its not about billboard dictating Drake’s level for me? I don’t work for billboard and billboard don’t dictate anything for me. They just looking at the plays and listing accordingly, its the fans driving those numbers.
We’re rap fans so I get it when people like at who’s the best lyrical miracle but from a music industry perspective, they not on the same level as somebody all over the rap charts, the pop charts and the R&B charts at the same time.
Some of the best albums in Hip Hop never had any mainstream critical acclaim so that to me means very little. I be listening to shit the mainstream aint gonna catch up on for years and maybe even never so critical acclaim don’t mean shit to me. Kendrick and Cole are dope, I’m just saying Drake don’t have to be like them in terms of lyricism because what he does is a form of “lyricism” in itself. Put them all on the same track and Kendrick and Cole aint gonna sleep on Drake as if he’s weak or somethin… They know he can rap when he wants to.
#facts
“You underestimated greatly, most number ones ever, how long did it really take me” – Drake
It doesn’t matter, I don’t scratch my head and think its all deep when I hear Lloyd Banks or Royce or Elzhi or Redman etc.. either but they still lyricists.
You don’t ask Fab, Ghost and Busta to be deep but you want Drake to be in order to say he’s a lyricist?
Sales have never equated to skill and I agree Drake is impressive. It isn’t really hip hop. Drake will never drop a straight rap album because he can’t and he knows that. “Hold on we’re going home” is a pop record Bruno Mars would sing. It’s cool that he sings and raps but he isn’t a better rapper than Cole or Kendrick. Not even close
I have NEVER said sales equate to skills. Again, he doesn’t have to be a better rapper then Cole and Kendrick. He dosn’t measure his lyricism by what they do. Cole to me sounds basic and abcish because I came up listening to Ras Kass, Talib and Wu Tang so Cole (and Kendrick at times) sound like some basic shit to me but they don’t have to equate to the kinda lyricism I listen to in order to be lyricists.
How can you grow up on Nas and Rakim, and Cole and Kendrick are boring to you, but Drake isn’t? IM confused as to how you went from straight bars to lullabies but Kendrick is boring
Because I don’t think Nas and Rakim are similar to Kendrick and Cole, I don’t hear those similarities. Now if you say Kendrick to Andre 3k then maybe but Nas was iller to me growing up the Kendrick and Cole are. Basically everybody I was listening to in the 90s were iller then Kendrick and Cole with the exception of like Master P. But everybody else I came up on was just iller IMO. Now I will say I started listening to Nas at a young age so maybe if I heard Kendrick at a young age I would hear some similarities but when I heard I Gave You Power, Street Dreams and If I Ruled The World as a kid I was like this nigga gotta be thee illest period.
What do numbers have to do with skill? When did hip hop become about numbers if that was true then Vanilla Ice is a better rapper than Immortal Technique.
he went plat before cole and his second major release did more than coles, what are u saying
I mean If heard him rapping on those time and place songs (6PM, 5AM, 9AM) and I mean thats lyrical imo.
I did a song with Kanye, Wayne and Em and his entire verse was a quotable and he went first.
It works out beter for him if he’s not a better “rapper” then them. Tell Kendrick and Cole to write almost 100 hit songs in less then a decade. Thats what Drake has done. At the core of “lyricism” is song writing.
Its the number of times 1 2 3 100….. Thats impressive. However Drake success doesn’t mean he’s any less the lyricist. Its like you wanna compare Drake to Kendrick? The more not like Kendrick is the better.
Ok so then your saying Kendrick and Cole have the same level of success on Billboard then Drake? There is no comparison to Drake’s level and people are saying he don’t rap as good as Kendrick and Cole?
Like breh, Drake is selling records (on a song for song basis) on an Eminem, Jayz, Kanye type of level and his first album just came out 5 years ago. That is craziness. Oh and btw, I though his last album was garbage as fuck.
Kendrick has the acclaim/respect, drake has the sales. Where does that leave Cole?
kendrick talks more about social issues, is a better technical rapper, has classic album(s). drake is a better singer, sells more records, connects more with the women, is more relatable for middle class folks. In any category, cole is always in the middle of kendrick and drake
