To me, a top five producer needs to be able to produce entire albums, not just “hits”. That’s why Timbaland, the Neptunes, Just Blaze and Alchemist ain’t contenders. Pete Rock is dope, but where is his body of work (other than Illmatic and a few classics with CL) that justifies his consistently high ranking? Dr. Dre has done some amazing stuff but to really be top 5, a producer needs to be flexible enough to survive changes in hip hop, make hits in different eras, and have done at least 4 or five 5 classic albums. My list is:
Preemo – Jeru’s albums, the Group Home one, plus all the classic Gangstarr shit
RZA – all the Wu shit – you can’t deny that he’s a master at those abstract beats that still sound hard
DJ Quik – from his early shit to Suga Free’s classic to his work with Pac
Khyree – the albums he did with Mac Mall, Ray Luv and Young Lay are all classic – listen to “got 2 survive” by Young Lay featuring 2pac if you don’t believe me
Kanye – makes pop shit but keeps it hip hop and isn’t afraid to take risks as an artist
how the hell people put mannie fresh in there list…. gtfo of here mann…
