News
The Distant Relatives went international last night and tore things down at The Zenith in France. I actually finally listened to the whole album today. Has some moments but overall not my cup of tea. Nice shirt, Nasir.
Previously: Nas & Irv Gotti in Queensbridge
This was the album of the year. Damien marley is severely underrated. Saw them perform at bonnaroo – excellent show.
Nas and Damian all day…Distant Relatives on repeat! Definitely a dope album!
Distant Relatives is a boss album!!!!!
I SLEPT ON THIS CD…GOOD STUFF
i respect your opinion YN, but that record needs to be nominated for a Grammy
After seeing a comment like that about the ALBUM OF THE YEAR I might stay away from this site. You Nigga.
YN, i been following since the first xxl issue with jay on the cover with the cigar. i know u love the culture. How is this album not your cup of tea, dawg? your site pumps drake and eminem so hard core it’s off-putting. but i still support and visit. but sometimes, man… i think it’s clear u favor the commercial guys. the cool, swagged out, guys. fine.
all i know is Distant Relatives is my hip-hop album of the year. better than thank me later. better than recovery.
most uplifting, well-produced shit i’ve heard from Nas in a long time. he’s in his element. and Damian murders it. shit is beautiful. aw man “Patience”? i get teary-eyed.
too bad nobody gives a shit. all the kids are too young and too into sex, money rap. same as it ever was. i’m sure teenyboppers would rather hear the chris brown/tyga album. and they weren’t the ones buying bob dylan back in the day, either. but i’m rambling.
Just here to cosign everyone that thought this was the album of the year, if not the album of the last several years
Nas / Damian Marley > ANYBODY on the radio right now
Its a great album. Nobody cares about YN’s dumb opinion
Co-sign album of the year.
Album of the year easy. This was an instant classic for me, and I’m usually not too receptive to reggae or dancehall music. If this album doesn’t get a Grammy, it will only be confirmation that the show is mad fraudulent. They need to put out a few more songs from this, because I think it can still find an audience.
[…] YN’s place. Distant Relatives is in stores now. Share & […]
the best collobrative album i ever heard. it was a perfect mesh of two legendary artists. definitely a classic album in my book.
I just want to comment on YN’s post. It doesn’t bother me that Distant Relatives isn’t YN’s cup of tea. Not at all cuz everything isn’t for everyone. However, it really bothers me that Distant Relatives dropped how many weeks ago and the cheif of “RAP RADAR” is now finally coming around to listening to an album from Nas & Damian. I mean, what kind of rap is on your radar if not Nas? It’s totally insulting. YN, a New York nigga, a Queens nigga at that who’s cup of tea is more Gucci Mane (you supported the shit out his album) than the man who carried Queens on his back all his career. YN, I won’t admit to know all the details so I maybe wrong but from my understanding you have a personal gripe with Nas and thats fine because you’re both human. However, when you have a slew of readers who visit your site to get unbiased news on the culture we love it shouldn’t be that obvious, hell, you don’t even bother to mask your feelings towards Nas. What? All because he wasn’t happy with you airing out his marital issues first on the radio? or was it ages ago when Nas burned all those magazines with yours being one of them? Let’s be professional with this thing. I admit, I love this site for real. I check Rap Radar and sites like it before I check world news on CNN.com (guilty pleasure) because thats just how important Hip Hop is to me. Its really disappointing when I see a Nas post and writers constantly taking shots at him for no good reason. You have the guys over at NahRight who insist on calling him “Gnozir” then turns around and thanks him for all the traffic they get when his name is mentioned. Then you got some site called “SmartenUpNas.com” that has nothing to do with the god. It’s disgusting, but God forbid he met an early demise like too many of our Hip Hop Heros often do, then you’d praise him right? Then you’d go back and take another listen right? It would all make sense then right? Then there would be a postumous “Lifetime Achievement Award”? Grammies? Its sickening, learn how to support your legends and stop trying to tear them down. Again, youre human YN so I expect you to have your preferences but to disregard a Nas album for weeks when you run a site called “Rap Radar” makes it obvious that you’re allowing your personal feelings get in the way of what should be unbiased journalism.
You guys take stuff too seriously
“its not my cup of tea..”
It aint mine either, I can see the artistic value it presents (Like I always say about albums like this, ones that arent “Traditional Hip-Hop”) and I can see how well they both mesh together, thats from a critical point of view. But, im not into REGGAE. Is it a must that I be all into REGGAE?? No, thats why the album is getting the rotation some of you might give it in my ipod. I’m not too into REGGAE, I see the cultural aspect to reggae, and I respect it heavy, but that dont mean imma listen to that shit 24/7
To each his own right?
I kinda Co-Sign QUEENZ a lil, but you normally be on some conspiracy shit for the most part. Dunno why YN is only JUST listening to the album, but maybe the nigga busy? Shit, I still havent listened to hella stuff. Niggas be busy.
“No, thats why the album is NOT getting the rotation some of you might give it in my ipod”
Co-sign Queenz
and co-sign the album of the year comments.
I copped this the day it dropped and still have it in heavy rotation. One day people will look back on this album and wonder how such a classic got overlooked by so many.
@ Word
lol, i dont mean to come off on some conspiracy shit but i try to read between the lines sometimes. I get that niggas be busy but not when its your job. Can you imagine YN not listening to an Eminem album (remember who co-owns this site) or a Jay-Z album (keep in mind he’s writing a book about him)? So you’re on top of all dude’s court issues with his ex wife but you didn’t listen to an hour long album from arguably one of the best to ever do it? Like I said before, its not about this not being someone’s cup of tea, its about calling yourself “Rap Radar” and intentionally not listening to a Nas album cuz of your personal issues with him.
I was there and it was craaazyyyy !
We got nearly all the Distant relatives songs + Nas classics + Damian classics + A few Bob Marley songs= 2h30 of concert
It was definitly a f*cking great moment
I Co-sign MOST DEF THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR
I’ve been to the live show too (in ATL) and it is AMAZING. The friend I took with me wasn’t really a huge fan, she was just kind of coming to check it out & now she not only got the album but is telling everyone who will listen how amazing it is.
I keep laughing when people say “where is Nas?” “when is Nas going to come back?” – and I’m like, HAVE YOU HEARD DISTANT RELATIVES…Nas’ spitting on that album is similar to the nas of the 90’s … its like dude has been rejuvenated…but Hip-Hop fans won’t even take the time to listen to the joint, smh.
i also respect YNs opinion. but on d real side to be someone who claims to support and love this culture how can this not be your cup of tea? i’m an eminem 2 fan and i think drake is aight and i’m down wit b.o.b and all the new cats doin something good for hip hop. but this album IS being slept on. and you YN in the position that ur in should be helping this album’s cause. this album could only happen at this period in time and under the circumstances it came together under. we’ll never see shit like this again. this shit was fire. and i think the word classic has been thrown out too many times lately but this definitely was classic. oh yah ps. Damian Marley is a muthafuckin BEAST!!!!! and Nas never stops impressing me. this album was dope. 10/10. n i’m not even black or from the u.s. BELIZE! oh yan n YN….Fuck Shyne! dat nigga wont ever come back
Greatest album of the year
a classic album too
DA ISH IZ ILL !!!
YN – you disgust me. NOT just because you don’t like the album. But the fact that you get excited like a school girl when Rihanna does anything, if Chris Brown does something, Drake gets plastered all over the site and OMF’nG your man crush on HOV is gay as f*ck.
But MAINLY is the fact you give a negative view on Distant Relatives when you come from a journalist background. And you flip flop like it’s nothing. One minute this site was giving a less than positive view of Drake next you’re on his nuts. One minute it’s Officer Ricky, next the site looks like a twitter page for the boss.
So you don’t like Nas album? OK. But surely as a “rap” fan you prefer it over Drake’s, or Gucci’s? Well have the cojones to send potshots at other people not named Nas.
B.Dot keep your head up! You keep this shit goin!
Big Homie does his thing. I’m sure your posts will get even better as you get more confidence and expertise.
YN…. you can save all the “big” stories to post yourself but we know who hold it down.
Out!
To be honest Im not surprised YN has just listened to it. He only listens to what he thinks will blow up or what is already popular. I could tell that ever since he was writing for XXL.
simple and plain….. not your cup of tea huh, should’ve said not ya cup of coffee. D.M. and Nas are like good herbal tea while the rest of that s*&^^ you support is like a a cup of dirty water passed off as coffee – decaf at that… The ignorance of the black man is reaching a point past insanity.
Used to check the site but you losing me son really fast.
Nobody realizes yet that yn be getting paid off from these labels? That’s why xxl fired his azz for dikk riding shady so hard. Hell if universal was pumping dollars in his pocket he would be singing praises for this album too. Cmon yn have some morals in your life.. Shits disgusting..
I copped this album and at first I thought nothing special. But I took a road trip and really listened to it. Hip hop and reggae go perfect together it’s great music.
NAS G.O.A.T!!!!! NUFF SAID!!!! SEEN THAT BOY NAS PERFORM ONCE!!!! IT WAS A SICK SHOW!!!! DISTANT RELATIVES IS A DOPE ALBUM!!!!
DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!
shitttt, most these comments are talking TRUTH.
+1 album of the year
Distant Relatives and How I Got Over- Co-Albums of the Year thus far.
double all that! This is music that move’s us, this is the stuff WE listen 2! THIS IS NO JOKE!! Def. best album of the year!!
I saw them 2 days ago in brussels belgium & it was amazing!
PEACE
YN……….That’s a bitch ass nigga. I can smell that hoe scent all the way through cyberspace.
Its cool. I know its not a record for everybody, especially Nas fans who want a purely Hip-Hop record. Its very much a theme record thats more Damien Marley featuring Nas. I love it but even I dont catch myself listening to it everyday (and I did do that with Streets Disciple and Untitled). There live show is meant to be pretty dope.
Might be worth catching them in Brooklyn on the 31st YN.
