On June 21, over 2,600 attendees packed the Proctor’s Theatre for Schenectady High School’s class of 2013. At the 5:30 mark of Jason Pollock’s commencement speech, he gave his interpretation of Drake’s popular phrases, “YOLO”, “No New Friends”, and “Started From The Bottom”.
It is interesting to look back at this discussion because the concerns about technology becoming a barrier to real communication have only become more noticeable over time. Messages are quick and convenient, yet they often cannot communicate tone, emotion, or intention as clearly as a real conversation. Technology itself is not necessarily the problem, but how we choose to use it matters. Even something as simple as a Basic Calculator shows how useful technology can be when it solves a practical problem without replacing meaningful human connections and conversations.
