See this lil dude is correct in that there are no rules to this shit anymore. Im not the biggest eminem fan i always felt like his music never really touched the hood enough and he was supposed to use D-12 as his hood albums. NO classics and im not goin off of sales real niggaz know what classics are. BUT no one can argue that dude is an MC and an ill lyricist, not to mention he had the biggest selling album this year (i dont care about sales but this is mtv’s criteria). No hate, but gucci can barely speak english, no album, and been a ghost for the last few months and hes on the list??? Even drake i dont respect mixtapes on these lists unless theres an album to go along with it because everyone does work on mixtapes they just showin skills but no pressure no concepts and u can rock over any beat. For an mc thats easy, but to put together a conceptual body of work that is part of your catalog and history is another story. I agree hov is running it and he should be at the top but eminem and Jada should have made that list in place of Gucci and Jeezy or Drake. Oh yeah I promise i know more about hiphop than anyone at that table except for maybe sway. Who are these people and what gives them the right to judge i dont even know where these people are from. U gotta prove to me that these people know as much or more than me about hip hop before i listen to them

  2. thunn says:

Where is Miss Info? Toure? Ed Lover?Kim Osorio?People that have seen the music and been around it long enough to not be GEEKY fans but real objective journalist or at least know a hot mc

  3. TAME says:

didnt expect to hear that from someone that was beefin with him……hrmmmmmm funny

  4. sideshowRaheem says:

    ^

Why does everyone think because Em got left off the list it’s not “objective journalist”. MTV is constantly on Em’s tip they gave him every VMA he was up for and he’s all over there website. I think he deserves to be on the list like most people but lets stop pretending MTV has something against him.

  5. tlntdtnth87 says:

^#1 rule is to sell records

This was never hip-hop’s intent; THAT’s what is killing the art.

  6. mmkayy says:

huh? The dood who used to date Janet said what..

    @sideshowraheem
mtv really doesnt have anything to do with this… They just gettin the hate coz those losers work at mtv.. Gettit? Good..

  7. Brummagen says:

    yep.

RAP RADAR SHOULD PUT ONE TOGEHER FROM THE FANS
    My list is

    1. Jay z

    7.Young jeezy
    8.Kanye west
    9. Lil wayne
    10. Drake

  9. Levi says:

Sir I apologize but wasn’t the question of who is the hottest in the game right? I agree Em album did sell quite well but was it good. YN tell me 5 good songs off that album? Please somebody help me I’ve been playing the album like crazy and I can only find 3 to 4 good songs after being away for some time now. Now Hov had a point he was on Forever but that’s one I repeat 1 good verse. That aint enough to make he sun shine folks

  10. mjj says:

    @ tintdtnth87

I will give you that it plays a small part but honestly without the business we will have no art…..Em should be 1 on the list because he is the illest and he brought the people out there homes to buy his record…come on man he did gold and better his first week….

like this is what fif be talking about….these rap heads on mtv are freaking lames..because they thinking about what is hot to the urban community when hiphop have transform to a global community and globally their is no artist bigger than EMINEM IN THE WORLD…%0 MAY BE BIGGER TOURING BUT HIS NAME HAVE REACHED EVERYWHERE…ALOT OF HEADS ARE MAD ABOUT THAT AND MTV JUST LOST ALL ITS CREDIBILITY……..SO WE DONT NEED NO MORE MTV LIST..IT IS OVER…

    TOP TEN

    1) JAY-Z
    2) EMINEM
    3) 50 CENT
    4) KANYE
    5) LIL WAYNE

  11. mjj says:

OH SHYT I NEED A REVISION….I WOULD TAKE OUT BUDDEN AND PUT IN TI…MOVE EVERYONE DOWN AND PUT TI AND NUMBER 4

I WOULD PUT BOTH WU MEMBERS AS HONORABLE MENTIONS

  12. tlntdtnth87 says:

    @mjj

Touche, but do we need the money to verify what we have done since Jazz, negro spirituals, and R&B as art. What is it to a man to gain the whole wide world, and lose his soul?

We’ve sacrificed the ability to educate and affect change for the dollar. Hip-hop’s elements:

Graffiti, MCing, DJing, Break dancing, & KNOWLEDGE

I don’t see benjamins anywhere in the equation.

  13. RapMusic09 says:

Em dropped Relapse, has the most sold album, did fire freestyles at Tim westwood, did the Run Dmc thing at the Rock hall of fame, performance at mtv movie awards, won hip hop award at mtv Video music award, dropped The Warning, killed drake, kanye and wayne on Forever and did a performance at Def Jam Hip Hop honors tribute…and still didnt make the list.Fuck mtv

  14. Carlos B says:

That list was pretty accurate, if you just saying who is hot right now it should have been Drake and Gucci 1 and 2. I dont hear alot of people going crazy anticipating EM.

  15. youknowme says:

Maybe Mtv heard Relapse and realize how wack it was…but all in all he deserves to be on that list

  16. thunn says:

@sideshow Raheem i am not saying that mtv is against eminem its obvious they are not in fact they are a big part of why he sells so much and i wish they got behind MORE hip hop ARTIST like that. What im saying is the people who constucted this list were dick riding other niggaz on that list like 50, he aint have to be on there this nigga been pumpfaking this album for like 2 years, and i dont care about them shitty mixtapes. He even had commercial shit on them mixtapes ( hoping one of them catch on like drakes’ did). But my point is the niggaz making the list act like fans themselves they jockin certain people and not being objective its not agaisn em

  17. MJJ says:

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY PEOPLE NOT ANTICIPATING EM…THE INTERNET GOES INTO A FRENZY WHEN ANYTHING TO DO WITH EM IS MENTION…LIKE I WONDER WHERE YALL LOCATION IS ..THE COMMON PERSON HANGING ON THE CORNER MIGHT NOT BE ANTICIPATING HIM….BUT DONT SAY THE MASSES ANOT..HE IS THE BIGGEST RAPPER IN THE WORLD…PLAIN AND SIMPLE…I WOULD PUT 50 AHEAD OF HIM IN MY OPINION

  18. MJJ says:

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY PEOPLE NOT ANTICIPATING EM…THE INTERNET GOES INTO A FRENZY WHEN ANYTHING TO DO WITH EM IS MENTION…LIKE I WONDER WHERE YALL LOCATION IS ..THE COMMON PERSON HANGING ON THE CORNER MIGHT NOT BE ANTICIPATING HIM….BUT DONT SAY THE MASSES ANOT..HE IS THE BIGGEST RAPPER IN THE WORLD…PLAIN AND SIMPLE…I WOULD PUT 50 AHEAD OF HIM IN MY OPINION….

    @ THUNN

EVERYWHERE I SEE YOUR NAME YOU ARE ALWAYS HATING ON FIFTY CENT…WHAT DID THIS DUDE DO TO YOU….YOU ABSOLUTELY HATES THIS MAN…YOU SAY WAR ANGEL WAS SHITTY WHERE THE FUCK DO YOU LIVE HOMIE..THAT YOU SAY THAT MASTERPIECE WAS SHYT…..EVEN HATERS FELT THAT SHYT WAS HARD….FOREVER KING WAS SHYTTY..U MUST BE 12 HOMIE…LIKE HE DESTROYED BOTH MIXTAPES AND WITH THAT ALONE HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOP 5….WAR ANGEL IS BETTER THAN ANY CD THAT CAME OUT THIS YEAR WITH EXCEPTION TO A FEW……

  19. ASID says:

Why u puttin jay z on tha top..Em’s album sold more than him…and the rest of Em’s achievements are on the box on the left..jay himself feels Em deserved it..why u nigga’s runnin ya mouths

  20. thunn says:

@MJJ. before i start in on u dude stop saying HOMIE where the fuck u from with that cornball shit. (dont gotta try so hard its just the internets). 2nd im not that far from where curtis jackson is from and right now no im not feeling him too much but when he 1st dropped he was hot. Now i said in my 1st post that i dont put a lot of credit into mixtapes that goes to 50, drake, wayne, gucci, and whoever else on the list that dropped mixtapes but not full albums. See im NOT 12 years old, in fact im from the era where niggaz was nothin without their albums. Mixtapes is just to get u hot or put ur name in the street neither of which this nigga 50 really need right now, if its fire drop an album put it stores and then u get ur props. I listened to that war angel shit and since when niggaz make songs for bitches on mixtapes???? and even if it is HOT as u say it was just a mixtape. His 1st album was a borderline classic and everything after been catering to the charts or bitches or over the top gunplay which we all know he cant be living no more, counter me please

  21. hasan1 says:

what about T.I.? He shouldve made the list too

  22. blainm says:

think everyone has forgot about t.i hasan

  23. nonny says:

lol when rappers from old beefs agree eminem should be on the list you know MTV FUCKED UP BIG TIMES

  24. blainm says:

the reason i put jay 1st was cause i like his hole swag from the way he records to his performances and his hole outlook on life he is a smart dude and bp3 is a decent album better then relapse.. em is going to go hard with this new album think he knows what we want from him after he get the shock value for his lyrics on relapse and proved to us that he still had it.. really looking forward to his next joint think his verse on forever was jus a taster

  25. mtv is wak says:

  29. Nathaniel says:

    1. who the FUCK gives a shit what jermaine dupri has to say

    2. who the FUCK is “always asking him how he feels”.

    3. yes…this is the record “business”, BUT the ART will ALWAYS outlast the money, and at the end of the day, will leave a deeper imprint on culture.

    4. eminem is dope as fuck. talent + sells = he’s on the list. but even when moving units, in 2009…is he more influential, more of a presence than even rick ross with all his semi-relevant lyrical content and materialism? no. and this is ultimately why he doesn’t make the list. sure hip hop brings races together, but it is STILL black youth culture, largely, and in 2009, eminem doesn’t have a stake in the way we run or do our shit. even as he provides MC’ing 101 lessons to drake ye and wayne on Forever.

  30. Bronx HIpHop says:

For these hottest MCs list, they incorporate so many factors…sales, lyrical skill, swag, flow, etc. Hip-hop is weak right now. So many decent rappers are getting treated as if they are some of the best to ever do it.

Drake is mediocre at best, and he hasn’t even dropped an album yet. He has a bunch of corny lines (“like a sprained ankle boy, i ain’t nothin to play wit”) and came out with one catchy song (“Best I Ever Had”).

Lil Wayne fell of HARD. I’ve always been a fan of Weezy since he first came out with Cash Money. His lyrics weren’t that great, but he had a sick flow. His lyrics improved greatly as seen on Tha Carter and Tha Carter II. Tha Carter III had a couple hot tracks, but that is about the time he started to get a little ridiculous. He’s rapping in that weird voice on all his mixtape tracks; he needs to go listen to his old shit again.

Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ was an amazing album. 50 has put out so much garbage since. He puts out a hot track every once in a while, but it’s mostly due to production rather than lyrics (“I Get Money”).

The fact that rappers like Gucci Mane and Rick Ross are even on this list is absurd. Gucci Mane is straight trash…remember “So Icy.” Rick Ross is a clown. He also gets lucky with his production, but he still never has any real bangers.

Jadakiss is probably the most underrated rapper of all time. People who actually listen to hip-hop will say he’s nice and one of the best, but mainstream America does not give him props. In my opinion, he’s the best rapper out right now next to Jay (Blueprint 3 is crazy). Fabolous is also in the same boat, but he gets a little more credit from mainstream America.

    Where’s Cudi at?

MTV just has to put certain people on the list to get people to tune in and watch their videos. I would personally just make a top 5 list (in no order): Jay-Z, Jadakiss, Fabolous, Eminem, Jeezy.

  31. Nathaniel says:

hell, we’re not even his audience. when he writes, he’s not even talking to us. we talk to each other. when jay says “grow up”, he’s talking to black america. when wayne boasts about his flyness, he ain’t addressing some white kid in the burbs or in a poor neighborhood either. he’s addressing the community from which he comes. when ye

eminem isn’t rapping to us. he’s talking to mainstream america, pop culture, white ignoramuses, and anti-shady-ites. white kids love black rappers because of the fantasy. they get to dip into something unfamiliar, taboo in their homes, shunned in american so-called culture. we listen to eminem because he lets us get a peak into what its like to grow up white, poor, and fucked up in america and go against the grain…and then, we look to the hottest black rappers to spread slang, dress-codes, and set all kinds of trends.

when it comes down to this, eminem gets shafted. his influence on hip hop and black youth culture is menial in 2009. even outselling cats. meanwhile ross, ye, wayne, jay, and EVEN GUCCI, IN THE SOUTH, (with his wack ass rapping) have tremendous influence. face facts.

  32. oh really? PT2 says:

DAMN BRONX HIPHOP YOU AND ME GOT LIKE THE SAME DAMN MIND ABOUT THIS SHIT! BUT CHECK OTU THE WARM UP BY J COLE TO ME HE> DRAKE. FO SHO

  33. oh really? PT3 says:

AND NATHANIEL…I KINDA GET WHAT YOUR SAYING BUT…EM HAS ALWAYS SPOKE TO BLACK CULTURE IF YOU STUDY HIS LYRICS LIKE ROCK BOTTOM HE EVEN ACKNOWLEDGES THE FACT THAT IF HE WAS BLACK HE WOULDNT HAVE SOLD AS MANY ALBUMS. IM JUST SAYING THAT I THINK THIS SHIT IS UNIVERSAL

  34. Streets says:

Let me tell yall something! All these rap list are fake and fony popularity contest to who image is the best. You really going to tell me that Eminem is a better rapper than Ice Cube,Twista and Scarface. If you know true hip-hop you will know its about Delivery, Timing, Passion, Lyrical Content, and Swagger. If you have any sense you would know that Eminem(Elvis) fan base is probably majority white. That means that white people are the majority so he’s going to sell alot of records. To be truthful his not even average. His content is Korny and his passion will never be real because his not from the hood. My real hip=hop fans no what I’m talkin about. Don’t get me wrong there are white rappers with passion like Paul Wall so I’m not discriminating because he is white. So all of these who is the best rapper right now is in the eye of the beholder. To be honest with you I have bought a DMX album before I have bought a Jay Z album. I have respect for Jay he is very talented but don’t have the delivery and timing of a Ice Cube. 111111111111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Streets says:

To tell you how messed up this popularity contest who the hottest rapper is. I have always been a hip-hop fan since I was a kid rappers delight T3 and I never have bought a Jay Z album and he has suppose to have beat out Elvis for 11 #1 record releases. Don’t get me wrong he has had some nice popular songs and put the hood up front. Can I say I can understand his lyrics like a 2Pac or Big no. Real recognize real I’m just saying. We need to let go of these popularity rapper ratings. Because they are lagit rappers out there they can’t sale because the media has stiffled they images in today’s young teen generation popularity contest. Have you ever notice 106 audience is about 15-20. I’m just saying we need to cover all rappers more equally.1111111111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!REAL TALK

  36. Gandy says:

To say that u respect paul wall and em is corny and not even average shows ignorance and ofcourse hatred .As rapper u have to hear lyrics and and as i know only jay(from those u mentioned and alive) is good enough lyrcist to play wit em and if you dont think so u dont kno shit abut rap. I get it u like that thug rhymes and gangsta rap more but u cant take credits from guys that made so much in hip hop,i like Ice Cube ,twista, scarface ,pac ,biggie, they r all true rapers.and yea i kno more black than white ppl that like em so that statment white ppl keeping em alive is bullshit.BTW em came from hood do some research before posting something stupid cuz u dont need to be black to came from hood that is just ignorant.

  37. blainm says:

its a list of the top mc of the past year whats ice, twista, scarface, pac, big done this year??? they are all great rappers that should be on a list of best mc of all time

  38. tlntdtnth87 says:

    @Nathaniel

100% true in what you said about the art form. We have too many ppl dubbing themselves as artists who are only in it for the money. If u just wanted money you’d be working a regular 9 to 5. BUT you can’t due to your criminal record, and hip-hop seems to be the only profession where past and present felonies are allowed. EPIC FAIL for my people and those perpetuating criminal culture as a way of life!

    & @oh really?
J Cole had by far one of the best mixtapes this year; and he didn’t even have the same notoriety of some of the other artists; personally i prefer The Warm Up of So Far Gone, but that’s just me.

  39. S.DA God says:

What about T.I.? He’s had a greater half a year then most on that list.

  40. teejay says:

All I have to say is

Andre 3000. He made the list with only one verse. The whole year. ONE VERSE. Amazing verse, but just ONE.

    Bull shit.

  41. Streets says:

(Gandy)I was refferring to all rapper list in general not just this top ten who’s hot for this year. They all are whack and is to the eye of the beholder!!1

  42. Streets says:

I’m not racist I’m white and from the hood too. That is my oppinion for all the haters! No need to relult to vilence (Gandy).

“white kids love black rappers because of the fantasy. they get to dip into something unfamiliar, taboo in their homes, shunned in american so-called culture.”

That’s right, when white kids get caught running around butt-naked in the woods, listening to dem doggone evil Negro records, their parents make them sleep in the barn every night for a month. Nathaniel, don’t talk shit about things you know nothing about. You make yourself sound ignorant as hell…

  44. Peter Cole says:

Rap is dead like Nas said cos today people like drake, gucci manne, souja boy are not to be classified as rappers, dey are singer with no class of music,Rap is gangsta and if you feel me we are talking of the Notorious BIG(greatest rapper ever) 2 Pac also one of the greatest of all time,NAS,Jay Z,Jada kiss,Fabolous, snoop dogg,The Game,Kanye west,Dr Dre,Ice cube,Busta rymes,Lil Kim,Scareface,DMX,Jarule,Fat Joe,Big Pun,Waran G,Lil wayne,Eminem,Coolio, craig mack dis are the greatest mc of all time, keep it gangsta.

  45. tlntdtnth87 says:

    @Peter Cole

Yes, those are some of the greatest MCs of all time, but the 90s are over, and a new breed are joining forces. And you’ve gotta look past the list, cuz their are MC out their that are doing hip-hop that didn’t make the list. If hip-hop was dead this sight and these dialogues wouldn’t exist. AND HIP_HOP ain’t just GANGSTA. Let hip-hop get out of this box we want to cast it into.

  46. Peter Cole says:

    @tintdtnth87

We just have to appreciate the fact the we still enjoy Rap music no matter the year it was released and today i dont really feel dis guys call rappers cos dey dnt make sense, dey should try and rediscover wot rap music is all about, for me i still often listen to my above list of rappers and i still love the music,Let save Rap.
