Drake Explains 2Pac Line On “Fear”

“I never cried when ‘Pac died, but I probably will when Hov does/ And if my tears hold value, then I would drop one for every single thing he showed us/ And I’ll be standing in a puddle.”

Via telephone, Aubrey clarifies to MTV that the 2Pac mention on “Fear”, wasn’t a diss. Who was dumb enough to think it was anyway?

“A lot of people also sort of don’t understand the meaning of that line,” Drake said. “It’s not necessarily that I don’t love West Coast hip-hop or that I don’t love ‘Pac now that I’m 22, but that line was just said to show how new I am to hip-hop. And like I said, I was 9 when that happened, so it didn’t really affect me.”

  3. iwyk says:

and the “you know i balled (bald)…chemo” line didn’t get any backlash. wow.

  4. Toya says:

His explanation doesn’t change anything. I was the same age as Drake when 2Pac died but it was a still a big deal because I was aware enough to know what a great rapper the man was. I didn’t curl into a ball and cry over it but I knew that rap music had suffered a pretty big lost.

drake dont need to say shit about pac unless he paying homage point blank.

  7. Tysonz says:

In an interview with Peter Rosenberg, Drake was asked what his favorite rap albums of all time were, He reply was Kanye West “Graduation” and Clipse “Lord Willin”. Its safe to say Drake began to listen to rap in 2003. …

  8. WhatsDatYay? says:

And why this need an explanation? You gotta be kidding me Ok maybe hip hop fans ages 8-12 thats who that was for right?

  9. iwyk says:

  11. FLIP says:

I’m just happy someone besides me is thinking about Hov dying.

  12. Sirhc says:

WTF is the big deal… we all know 2Pac is great we don’t need Drake 2 say it for us.. he’s not dissing the man..

  13. Nathaniel says:

hell, i was 10 and i cried like a muthafucka. and so were the other elementary school children when i got to school the next day. in retrospect, that really just serves as a testament to what we lost. i grew up in an all black community, black schools, and Pac was one of the beginnings of my identity as a young, black kid. he made you feel like he was talking directly to you in his records, and that what he was saying was of the utmost importance. he explained things i was going through like he understood what i couldn’t put into words.

drake’s age isn’t why he couldn’t relate. it was the blaring fact…HE WAS IN CANADA. need i say more. ad if you didn’t cry, nor drake, its no biggie. but his reasoning that he was too young just ain’t accurate. hell, i’m still waiting on the nigga to let we american born-and-raised-ers in on WHAT THE FUCK ITS LIKE TO GROW UP IN CANADA…c’mon b, make yourself a lane. your lil wayne/kanye-ing is only gon’ last so long.

  14. G says:

NOBODY on the east coast cried when pac died…

    Jay-Z > 2Pac

  15. Nathaniel says:

and for God’s sake, he wasn’t dissing Pac. this is more obvious than the “i ain’t talking bout Game” line. i feel like niggas critical listening skills are suffering these days.

  16. Jamiezz says:

Don’t see how people interpret that shit as a diss.. nigga was 9. When I was 9 someone dying that I didn’t even know personally was like umm ok? Shitt what is that elementary school you ain’t worrying about shit other than when you get to go to recess and get outa school.

  17. Jamiezz says:

    BTW I LOVE PAC
PAC>BIG YEAH I SAID IT (HERE COMES MORE HATE)
BTW I DONT EVEN LIKE DRAKE THAT MUCH….

  18. dre says:

2PAC THA GREATEST OF ALL TIME PERIOD JAY-Z COULD NEVA FILL HIS SHOES!

  19. Rhyme says:

smh shut up, Drake shouldn’t speak on Pac unless hes paying homage, this cornpuff couldn’t speak Pac name if he were alive, that much we know, he isn’t built like that.

  20. dmc says:

when pac died drake was probably to focused on his studies to give a shit

  21. Mr.realshitwheniherit says:

thats right he should have never spoke his name if he wasnt paying homage. that guy drake he will sell but not much, cause that was some bullshit he said. that guy not even from the streets.

  22. Interscope Employee says:

Pac is better than Jay-Z. enough said!!!

  24. lup says:

how anyone can take anything wheelchair jimmy says seriously is beyond me. he was on fucking degrassi.

  25. Ac@pella! says:

I understood the line to the fullest. It’s what a lot of niggas my age (22) wanna say, but are scared because of the backlash they’ll get from the heavy ‘Pac fans. It’s true, we WERE only about 8 or 9 when he died, so a lot of us didn’t understand and jus really got into hip hop. (Excuse me if I’m repeating the same thing someone else stated in their comments. I jus skipped all the way down and started typin’.) But I grew up on all of Hov’s stuff, which was right around the time of ‘Pac’s passing so it makes perfect sense. He’s been such a huge influence to pop culture and the hood in general that I know I’ll prolly cry when Hov dies as well. Not to mention that the song actually bangs and is heartfelt and truthful…and after reading all the comments on here, it seems like a few of ya’ll niggaz r members from the Outlawz or jus bitter ass ‘Pac fans. So what the nigga is from Canada?!?!?!? At age 9, tell me what mufucka is gonna cry about a family member they BARELY new at a funeral let alone a rapper thatchu NEVER NEW OR MET???? Let’s be serious and logical. Outta all 27 comments on here, I only saw about 5 that made sense without niggaz being biased. I can’t lie, I didn’t appreciate ‘Pac OR Big’s music until I grew older. Hell, I didn’t appreciate hip hop until I got older period! When ur a kid, u don’t give a fuck about nothin but playin with toys, recess, snack time, and cartoons. U don’t know shit about what a rapper is sayin….well, back in the day. Not in this day and age cause kids r bad as fuck and pick up on EVERYTHING said. And did anybody LISTEN when he said “DON’T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY, BUT…”…Obviously not. Niggas heard it but didn’t LISTEN….

Excuse my grammatical errors: *KNEW and *knew.

  27. Tysonz says:

^^^^ Aubrey Graham is that you?

  28. GoddessCru says:

Drake could have picked a much better way to say that. Don’t blame being young on your not understanding the man’s message. But then get on your knees (like so many men do) in regards to Jay Z. I was 8 years old and I cried when Pac died. At that point in my life, nothing bigger had affected me. Hell, I cried when Luther Vandross and Gerald LeVert died. It has nothing to do with being too young to understand. The point is that the line can be taken as Drake just kissing ass and making a lame excuse. The music and messages are relatable to people who don’t even like rap music. Pac rapped about LIFE. Ghetto life, the good life, thug life, prison life, life according to men/women and life as he knew it. Even at 8, I understood who we lost that day. As a Hip Hop advocate, I understood that we lost a hell of an MC. But as a human/revolutionary, I lost a role model. Someone I connected to because he spoke a lot of truth, not just made a bunch of flashy rich nigga songs.

Drake doesn’t get a pass from me because he’s just kissing Jay’s ass. I won’t cry when Jay passes. As much as I love Hip Hop, Jay’s “message” doesn’t exactly mean anything to me. His message is rather self absorbed. At least Pac was a man about the people. Unfortunately, the industry later corrupted his message. But at least he managed to have one. Can’t say the same for Jay. “I get paid” isn’t really a message. And to be honest, isn’t that pretty much the theme of his career? Far and few in between are the introspective looks into life from Jay-Z. His whole approach is very guarded and almost unnatural. As if he’s pretending to be Jay because he isn’t comfortable as Shawn. Can you allow yourself to be human? Or is it cool to be a god damn character all the time? Pac was that very intense, often misunderstood man on every song. Who is Jay? I can’t get into his whole “I’m just Jigga” persona. If he would rap about something meaningful to him (other than money and success), maybe I could respect it. Then again, that could be my womanly response to things.
