Wasalu tells Sha that the pesky bootleggers made him shut down a sequel to Enemy Of The State and he also explains why he halted the DJ Absolut mixtape of his early tunes too.

Sometimes I feel there may be too much Lupe music out there — whether it be old stuff or new stuff or freestyles. I don’t want to have a ton of music sitting out. I made the decision to fall back from it… The one thing I don’t want with that is confusion. I want the message to at least connect until we get to the release date. After that, we can do whatever. Right now, it’s Lasers time.”

C’mon son.

Bonus: Lu performs “I’m Beaming” for the first time at The Shrine in Chicago.

  2. Cunning Link Quest says:

this bitch don’t know it’s 2010?! the internet is in charge of your career.

  3. darkcatalyst says:

Ugghhh. This is exactly the OPPOSITE of what your fans want Wasalu!! Why can’t you get it through your thick one track minded skull that there is NEVER enough of your material out there. Do not patronize the modern hip-hop fan, we KNOW what’s real and what’s fake and trust me, it’s NEVER a bad thing to have too much music out. That was your problem to begin with and that’s why you had to start your comeback. Now all of a sudden your done because of “bootleggers”? FUCK outta here. You talk like a hip-hop politician wanting to control his “message” and we don’t need that shit.

What is wrong with this dude? Does he not know that “Lasers” will be leaked a week or 2 in advance of the release date (whenever that’ll be after push backs) just like everybody else? You will never beat the bootleggers and leakers.

  4. khal says:

too much Lupe out there? he stops ANY AND EVERY LEAK OF HIS THAT DROPS. there’s NO NEW LUPE OUT THERE. he must think he has the midas touch. that attitude turns me off of his music more than the actual music he makes.

  5. Tores says:

im good with that shit dont put out music ever………..i never got into sons music so its all the same shit to me he retired before he dropped………………..

  6. mike says:

    finally, LASERS & WONNERS 2012

THREE ALBUMS IN A ROW, STILL A LUPE FIASCO ISH !

    PEACEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  7. neilSUTTON says:

I 100% agree with Lupe. Seriously YN, you are making yourself looking ignorant with the Lupe negativity.

  8. i agree with him. he has the right to do whatever he wants with his music..

  9. Hovitime says:

This nigga is trash what do yall see in him he is way too full of himself if u stop ya music from leaking nobody respects that and will wanna hear his bs when it does drop buck Lupe trashco

  10. Hovitime says:

Wowwwww this nigga is jockin jayz hard body in this video he has every hov mannerisms down to a jet gtfoh lupe!!!!!!!

  11. Blakout615 says:

“it’s NEVER a bad thing to have too much music out”
Yes it is,its called over saturating the market. Ex.- wayne in 07,Gucci puttin out 3 mixtapes in 1 day etc. Ppl can get tired of yo azz quick and work against u. Now it cud work to an rapper’s advantage,by blowing dem up bigger dan they are. But sum artists(lupe) are trying to put a particular msg out there. So when u do things such as leak their 1st single off their concept album,it kinda takes things out of place.
Hes not gonna beat the bootleggers,Jay-z cant even do it,but leaking songs hurts some artists especially after they put all their time and (record label’s) money into it just to have it dropped on the internet like its nothin.

  12. Ty says:

He’s not being logical. For one he DOESN’T put out hardly any new music compared to the average artist. Secondly the frenzy that lack of music creates in his “fans” makes the bootleggers dig for his new material even harder cause they know there’s a hungry audience that doesn’t get music from the source, except for every 3 or so years. I mean he finally drops a mixtape and look at how short it was. It was good but he’s a stingy artist IMO.

I’ve always said he’s dope on the mic, but his away from the mic personality has made me and many others indifferent towards him. His attitude makes you ask ,”Wait a minute, is he THAT good?”.

He showed after the MTV list that he wants the fame and recognition that he speaks of so dismissively in his music, yet he’s too self absorbed to adjust his style one iota to be better appreciated and understood by the audience he wants so badly to be acknowledged by. He may as well rhyme in french to the average fan. Sadly I think the average fan needs his message the most. Those of us that GET Lupe, are already on his side. He’s content to preach to the choir I guess.

Lu is a genius on the mic. Most will never know it though. That’s why stars are stars. Somebody like 50 who’s not as gifted on the mic, has more charisma , and even with his bad guy act , more likability in one finger than Lupe does in his whole body. You can’t buy that IT….. and Lupe doesn’t have IT. Every time he opens his mouth outside of a booth he shows that.

  16. BE says:

.. and sadly for the same reason I stopped reading XXL. YN. Smh.

  17. darkcatalyst says:

@Ty, I wish I could have said that in my post. Bravo sir, you are on point

@Blakout “Yes it is,its called over saturating the market. Ex.- wayne in 07,Gucci puttin out 3 mixtapes in 1 day etc.” << and you just named 2 artist that are on top of the hip-pop stations and charts. When you are good, people don't mind. When 50 had mic skills (pre-Massacre) he flooded the net with music and now he's one of the most known artist EVER. Joe Budden kinda flooded last year and he gets talked about non-stop. Crooked I did 52 weeks straight and opened people's eyes. Freeway & Young Chris both did 30 days straight and got major respect.

Lupe has put out ONE mixtape, ONE rock single and ONE loose mp3 in the past 3 years. He's reaching Saigon status at this point. He's not even NEAR the level of over-saturation…he's barely breaking under-saturation.

  18. Nathaniel says:

    ahem…

The Cool didn’t leak. let him fight if he wants. submission is the first sign of defeat.

  19. Nathaniel says:

i don’t see why fans want to control niggas careers. we’re on here making comparisons to how the average artist does it and then lupe.

when has he ever been the average artist?

he has, since farhenheit 1/15, operated on his on plane, on his own orbit, with pretty much no regard for anything but what he believes to be right for himself and his music.

are we expecting different because it’s been awhile since The Cool? do we need to remind ourselves who we’re dealing with here?

  20. Nathaniel says:

and thirdly, F&L didn’t go close to gold.

    The Cool went gold.

he has quite a fan base. he isn’t mos def/talib etc. you sell 500,000+, you’re in a good spot. he dropped in 2006, 4 official mixtapes, 2 albums, one on the way. it’s been 2yrs since the Cool (released Dec. 2007)…

Kanye been out since what…2003? and he has 3 rap albums, one singing. how many mixtapes? lu isn’t really that far off.

and LASERS would have been out if not for the label. not lupe. hell, if not for the label, we’d probably already have 2 discs of LupEND…Everywhere, and Nowhere. remember? Atlantic has their clutches on the music more so than lu does.

  21. mike says:

new mixtape coming 2010 lasers album dis summer
    2011 new album
    2012 new album

trust him, he will drop three albums in a row

    LUPE IS A DOPE EMCEE
he has already 2 greats lps
    that’s it !

    GET READY 4 LASERS

  22. nirus xhonda says:

FUCK WHAT ANYBODY SAY ABOUT LUPE TO ME HE HAS A MESSAGE IN IS MUSIC..HE RIGHT WHY OVER SATURATE THE STREETS WITH YOUR MUSIC IF U HAVE TRUE FANS THEY GONNA WAIT ON YOU TO PUT OUT SOME NEW PRODUCT…DUDE JUST HAVE A PATTERN TO HOW HE WANT TO PUT IS MUSIC OUT…I NEVER MET DUDE I JUST KNOW HIM THRU IS MUSIC SO I CANT VOUCH FOR NOBODY OFF THE MIC.

    LASERS NOT LOSERS.

  23. Noles506 says:

Lupe is like any other new rapper…all talk, no action.

  24. Jim says:

Who is the idiot who used wayne in 07 as an example of how over saturation can hurt? Are you an idiot? 07 was the start of Wayne going to be the biggest thing in rap (not saying the GREATEST, just the biggest in regards to news, spotlight, n shit)

The reason Wayne got to where he is now is because he was puttin out so much dope shit for the past 2 years. That how he got so much fame. People startin hear about this kid wayne who was dropping dope mixtapes every 2 months, then more people started talking, then artisits starting hearin it and soon everyone wanted him on a guest spot. Then C3 drops (after MAJOR leakage) and goes platinum in the first week.

So please, please, when you trying to argue the negativity of over-saturation, dont use wayne as an example.
