Lupe Doesn’t Want To Be Like Jay-Z

Thursday, February 25 2010 2:28 PM EST | Posted by: Big Homie | Posted in: Blog, True Story

During Wasalu’s tour stop in the outback, he spoke with The Age to discuss past label conflicts and satisfying his core audience.”I don’t want to be Jay-Z and be worth $400 million and perform on every awards show,” he says. “It’s getting in touch with somebody who needs to improve their self-esteem. As opposed to driving a Bentley and putting some chains on.”

Lupe doesn’t want to be Jay-Z? More like he cannot be.

  14. Dan says:

Reading comprehension fail for the fucktards up top. He isn’t disrespecting him. He is saying that he would rather make music which tries to offer an alternative to the mainstream instead of being as commercial as others. He is just using Jay-Z as an example.

These two have done songs together ffs.

Read a book you illiterate fucks.

P.S. Look at the posts on this site…Jigga has performed on tons of award shows this year.

  15. rAND says:

Obviously Lupe should’ve “dumb it down” for some of you cuz the ones who are hating on Lupe just don’t get his point.

  16. flthbrizz says:

Well someone clearly has Jay-Z’s man milk all up in their mouth. And elliot will post anything that has Jay’s name in it. Ha.

  17. alan2000xl says:

i think all of you are missing the point that he was tyring to make. he doesnt want to be a “mogul” type of figure. Whether he can its a tottaly different story so please save the hate for oj da juiceman type of shit. Your missing the point he wants to be a different type of artist and doesnt need to run a entire label, appear on every show(yes lately he has been involved in many awards shows) so dont tell me about its been since so and so time, be known for being larger than life type of figure. I like jay-z, i guess he’s trying to say he doesnt want that type of lifestyle.

  18. BJ says:

The pressure of being that famous isn’t something everyone can handle. Only a rare breed can live with that amount of wealth and fame. I think Lupe is saying he’d rather still be tangible and be able to speak freely and make a direct connection with people and not have the pressure of being that guy. I think he’d rather be like Scarface, but even Scarface became frustrated by not being able to put out his product and be as profitable as he desired.

  19. cease says:

RHYME & reythehussein i co-sign u both all day. i cant stand this dude, u dont want to be him becuz u never could be. so y even mention his name, just say u wanna b low pro and motivate. fuck outta here…

  20. B.Dot says:

I like jay-z, i guess he’s trying to say he doesnt want that type of lifestyle.
    ^
    basically

  21. Lame ass Lupe says:

    @café.caramel You go.

Fuck that Lupe. jay called this dude the next big thing and he acting like that. shame yourself

Lupe would love to perform at award shows but his lame assss with no personality wouldnt even allowed to sit in the audience.

  22. Can says:

It was no reason for him to use Jay’s name when no other rapper has done more for charity and helping others outside of his music than Jay-Z. It comes off as disrespectful. What’s wrong with being worth 400 mil? or performing on awards shows? it increases your stature, that’s precisely WHY jay is able to do the charitable things he does on the scale that he does, and uhhh Lupe can’t.

he’s just not making sense. like homeboy up there said, people always say they don’t want to do something they can’t do anyway. Lupe is the first one to complain about how he doesn’t get enough attention or sales. but now that’s not important to him? yeah, right.

  23. every.day says:

    @rand
    @dan

oh yeah. Lupe is just way fucking deep. if he was such a genius, he wouldn’t have to, as you put it, “talk down” to people. he’d make himself clear. and he didn’t. he used an example that was clearly on his little tiny mind.

  24. cease says:

and to those of u uptop who think we thnk he is dissing jay. its not the case. dudes can read just fine. im just like yo y even mention something u will never even be near. say u dont wanna drive a bentley and wear chains then. the nigga just annoys me, and im not alone when i think dudes come off thinkin he’s hotter than he really is. i feel like cudi will rhyme circles around dude, he’s a cooler and more likeable lupe, @ least in my eyes. carry on

  25. NotoriousRambo says:

I DUNNO MAN I NEVER FELT THIS GUYS MUSIC

  26. I Beez Tha Boss! says:

Some of ya’ll ride jay’s dick harder than beyonce, applaud yourself. Lupe Said and i quote “It’s getting in touch with somebody who needs to improve their self-esteem. As opposed to driving a Bentley and putting some chains on.” let me translate for you dumb illiterate base heads. (my music is designed for people to be empowered and inspired without the need of materialistic things, unlike jay-z who raps about materialistic comfort rather than internal solitude) i swear rap fans are a bunch of dumb motherfuckers, read a book.

  27. Rhyme says:

Fuck u B.Dot. Lupe need to make some fuckin hits to even have the lifestyle as Jay-Z.
Come on this dude has no accolades and acting like he the shit.
Comparing himself to Hov., Man please! Kid no where that level.

  28. Theloneus says:

I’m so fucking happy RR decided to give Yung Ber-g-dshit the finger and tell him to take the dick out his ass and start a fucking career. Props to RR.

  29. lostme says:

wow u’d think you cats were related to Jay-Z smh obviously you really jump to conclusions warp drive style cause like others said he basically stated he doesn’t want his LIFESTYLE. Do you know how hard it is to keep up that type of life? I understand where Lupe is coming from because I wouldn’t want it either. Having the most doesn’t mean your life is the best.

  30. nirus xhonda says:

ALL YALL WHO RIDING JAY-Z PRETTY HARD THERE I MEAN I THOUGHT YALL WAS BEYONCE FOR A MINUTE U FOOL…I DONT WANNNA BE JAY-Z SO WHAT IF LUPE SAY THAT YALL NEED TO UNDERSTAND BEING YOURSELF AND LEAVING YOUR MARK MAKES U MORE MEMORABLE PERSON IN HISTORY U FOOLS MAKE ME SO SICK TAKE JAY-Z BOZAK OUT YALL JAWS.

  31. Nathaniel says:

all the nigga was saying is he doesn’t want the image and position that jay-z has. pretty simple. rather than show niggas his success as a motivating factor, he’d rather enrich and uplift.

hence, the difference between jay-z music and lupe fiasco music.

it ain’t hard to tell niggas. it ain’t a diss. lu was in the studio for the recording of the blueprint AND the black album. jay executive produced food & liquor. he’s lu’s mentor (F&F Productions, lu’s label deal with atlantic was inspired by the roc-a-fella/def-jam deal. jay was on “pressure”, on f&l. and Jay consistently co-signs lupe as one of the nicest current gen. emcees out.

know your history. lu is just more of a nas (without the wife troubles) than a jay-z. its that simple. niggas be looking for a chance to shit on lupe these days, smh. alas…

  32. lostme says:

    @ Nathaniel

Correct not everyone likes flashing lights, champagne wishes and caviar dreams.

    ^couldn’t have said it better.

  34. lol says:

lmao at the Hova dickriders coming to the rescue. Lupe obviously meant he didn’t want that type of lifestyle, he wasn’t dissing him you morons.

And lol at the dude saying Cudi would run circles around Lu. If you really believe that, then you are delusional.

    Carry on dickriders, carry on.

  35. Can says:

“It’s getting in touch with somebody who needs to improve their self-esteem. As opposed to driving a Bentley and putting some chains on.”

as opposed? why are these things in opposition? I don’t think I’ll ever want a Bentley or wear jewelry no matter how rich I get, but I still feel more motivated by Kanye and Jay than I ever do Lupe. it’s a diss because he’s implying that all Jay cares about is material wealth, when a lot of what he does is inspirational. so to use “as opposed” would mean that these things are in opposition, he’s implying they’re mutually exclusive, which is faulty, false, presumptuous, disrespectful.

  36. UNDERSTAND THE WACK NIGGAS POINT, BUT THIS CORNBALL THINK HE HOT IN THE GAME. AT LEAST THE JEW NIGGA DRAKE GOT SOME HOT TRACKS, THIS NIGGA ON THE OTHER HAND… JUST SMDH

    1) PAPARAZZI = MURDER

    2) ALCOHOL = NO NO

    3) CAVIAR = NASTY SHIT

    KILLUMINATI!!!

  37. AppeldP says:

Theres is only 1 Jay Z in this world! Empire State of mind is still turnin my tables…

  38. koa29 says:

Ya’ll need to get off Jay’s dick…. Lupe wasn’t dissing Jay or anything, just saying he doesn’t wanna go down that road of fame.

“In fact to be Jay-Z, you would have to make 100 n 20 or so more classics. Ha!
fuck u lupe, your best song was kick push and that’s it. And i like ya, but know your place.

Kick push was his best…? C’mon son. Dont be ignorant

  39. WE ELEVATE says:

SMH @ THE CHILDREN CRYING OVER JAY LIKE HES SOME KIND OF GOD. DONT WORRY ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE’S ILLUSION OR VIBRATORY STATE…YEAH TAKE THAT…YOU FUKS NEED TO START READING BOOKS ON HOW TO CONTROL YOUR REALITY. LOL..BUNCH OF SURROGATES!! DUMB IT DOWN JUST A LITTLE MORE LUPE SO THAT THESE PHYSICAL VEHICLES YOU CALL HUMANS CAN UNDERSTAND YOU!!

  40. imacallyouout says:

Lupe coulda phrased it better so as not to stir up the debate that he’s obviously stirred up. It’s obvious he meant no disrespect to Jay though.

  41. BKLYN says:

It was a slick double talk comment. But it’s not that serious. And Jay has represented the culture well, made a great music and a shit load of bread….not to mention he actually wifed up a woman that a most Dudes dream about…
Simply put…Reaching someone’s soul and inspiring self-esteem and being wealthy and on top of your craft aren’t mutually exclusive…they can both be done..Lupe’s just to short sided to see that….
Oh yeah I like how he says this after realizing he won’t ever be Jay-Z..LOL

    ——–

Lyrically, he is a genius. Only a hater would deny this. There are only a few that are anywhere close to his level. Beat selection sometimes is questionable and so are some of his business moves but artistically, he is one of the best to come out in 2000s. So you are 0-1 first off.

Secondly, I personally never mentioned anything about Lupe considering himself as deep or w/e. Nor did I say he was “talking down” to anyone. That is your own misinterpretation. Surprise. Again, read a book.

Thirdly, if the niggas at RR would provide the entire context as opposed to just a little snippet, than maybe idiots like you could understand what he is trying to get at. This is the same tactic outlets like Fox News use. This site is turning into the Bossip of hip-hop blogs.

Jigga super-stans: calm the fuck down.

  44. BKLYN says:

@ Dan “Lyrically, he is a genius”….You are the official winner of the “This Niggas Crazy!!” Award…

You defend Lupe with a “genius” tag then call Jay’s defenders “Super Stans” ( Which is actually funny)…

  45. SkidaRoc says:

Dude would never diss Jay, he was around Jay for years. Jay still regards him as one of the best. The reaction shows me how unintelligent the average hip hop head is. It’s sad folks.

  46. Reasy F. says:

Jay-Z and Lupe Fiasco are on different wavelengths.

But reading that quote from Lupe clearly shows that he’s not dissing Jay-Z, but rather take his own approach as to reaching fans. But of course someone people skim quotes, take some words and build negativity.

  47. TdotHIPPY says:

It’s not a diss or a jab in my opinion but it makes me wonder why someone that has been around more than a minute would make the mistake of using names “JAY-Z” when he coulda just said he doesn’t wanna be a mogul? Oh wait i know the answer…. because we are sitting here talking about it. He’s a good MC but he’s always on some self righteous shit.

  49. teejay says:

I like lupe’s music, and i know this wasn’t a diss at jay-z, but its just fucking arrogant. The way he’s saying it seems to imply he thinks he could be jay-z if he wanted to. I know rappers need to have a sense of ego, but you need to be able to back it up at this point lupe.
