Wale vs. Skip Bayless On Jay-Z

Friday, March 05 2010 12:30 PM EST | Posted by: B.Dot | Posted in: Blog, Focus

For nearly two hours, Wale discussed sports with Skip Bayless on ESPN’s 1st and 10. In the final segment, he and Skip debate whether Jay-Z’s the greatest rapper of all time. Skip argued that Hov lacked stage presence and a good voice. Hov has admitted to the latter in previous interviews. Let the great debates begin.

But honestly Pac on a top 5 would be 3 or 4…..Nas i dont know man lol Nas is all fucked up now i dont know what happen too him lol

Thank You!!! Jalen Rose Hip Hop knowledge >>> Wale

I want to know how in the world does having 11 #1 albums make you the best?? B/c thats the same reasoning people always have for giving Jay that GOAT title. He isn’t a great live performer, I’ve seen him 3 times, and I’ve seen Beans outshine him, Mary J. Blige outshine him and even 50 outshine him on stage. This 11 #1 albums Bullshit is strickly accolades, that says nothing about skills! The majority of people who bought BP3, are the not the same people who bought Reasonable Doubt in 1996! The majority of his current fanbase has absolutely no knowledge of our culture and the legends in the game. They don’t know about Masta Ace, Public Enemy, Jeru The Damaja, Mic Geronimo…. They can’t recite lyrics word for word on It Was Written or Da Shinin…. Jay Z is the most successful business man/rapper we’ve ever seen, hands down… but the best rapper… Hell Nah… niggas need a reality check… stop smoking that water

  6. I.S.A.A.C. says:

Jalen Rose (minus the wayne inclusion) won this debate HANDS DOWN.

  7. e_money says:

*high fives jalen for mentioning andre 3000* but bayless is a idiot jay is the greatest

  8. AJB4 says:

Jalen knew more about hip hop than Wale i might delete Attention Deficit off of my Zune just for that

  9. 3Stacks says:

No one person can be the best rapper ever becoz rap is art and so appreciation is open to opinion .

  10. mmkayy says:

wow gotta say Skip dude is on point..

  11. Will says:

whats funny is Jalen Rose is more credible than Wales Opinion Jalen Use to be and still might be a hiphop DJ

me personally I think Pac is the best I know its cliche and everytime I say Jay is the best or Em is the best I go bacc and put on an Old pac record and mark my words if you would do this too you would be like WTF is Jay-Z and Eminem off of one of Pac’s record

Like this is true story I was went to see that wacc ass biggie Movie and the highlight off the movie is when Hit Em Up got played Everybody in the theatre was rapping that shit word for word even after the song had past to the part where biggie bust in that interview on Faith niggas was still rapping Pac has the strongest influence on the Game and nobody nobody but Wu Tang Clan has made a Bigger Impact On this Game even the westcoast Movement is nothin compared to Pac Ill give Wu tang Clan the same amount of Impact becuz them niggas came in so Raw when they came Im 20 I was 4 years old when Protect Ya Necc Dropped and that shit changed my whole perspective of the MC Hammer is the best rapper

Pac is the Best Rapper of All time

and Wu Tang Clan is the best Hiphop Group ever

  12. Vega says:

@MrWah thats true i argee with you….Honestly i tell people if Biggie was alive jay-z will not be where he is at…Business wise yes he will have all that money hip hop wise no he will not be hot he will be number 2…But you got to also know that all the shit that jay-z was talking back in 96 people are just saying it now and they are trying to be hot! I was one of the ones who bought reasonable doubt back in 96 and i still get jay-z albums till this day…The thing i hate now is like you said people dont know the legends in the game and people just give titles to wack ass rappers..Like i heard some corn ball dude the all day saying the young money album is better then Wu tang 1st album SMH! Shit like that ruins hip hop! They forget the legends the ones who open the doors for these new cats now….

  13. SilkCityP says:

Hip Hop and its debates are completely lost!!! Did people forget that being a rapper is about RAPPING! Not 11 #1 albums, not being worth a shitload of paper. Jay is great, there is no question about that, but as far as being the greatest… He is not even top 5! I’m talking about Lyricism, Concepts, Story-Telling, Connecting with your listener, Staying True to yourself, etc…

    BIG > Jay
    Nas > Jay
    Eminem > Jay
    Scarface > Jay
    Big Daddy Kane > Jay

And thats only about rapping!!! Not success, not downfalls in your life, money, mainstream appeal, only being an MC!

  14. Slow Ur Roll, Know Ur Roll says:

    Fuck out of here.

    2Pac,Nas,Biggie>>Jay

  15. Jay is not the greatest ever. Em prob holds Ray title but I know for certain it ain’t jay

  16. mmkayy says:

@silkCityP truest shit someone ever commented on RR

  17. drast says:

    Biggie, Common, Eminem > Jay-Z

but Jay-Z isn’t far from them!

  18. slimshady37 says:

50 cent > jay? ahahahaha get the fuck outta her homie
    its always been em>jay.

in terms of stage presence jay is pretty wack ill admit that, no body comes close to kanye, who is legitimately in the top 10 all time because of his creativity and all the shit he does himself (i.e production).

jay used to be dope but bp3, his lyricism went down a few notches, a damn shame.

  19. Mr.Londoner says:

Why are they talking bout HOV on a sports show?

    america is weird.

  20. Vega says:

Life after death is better then half of jay-z classics if you no you have a problem!

  21. Slow Ur Roll, Know Ur Roll says:

Music Alone: What other Rapper can you go 2 a party and juis his music 4 the WHOLE PARTY?
Is it even possible to make a single disk Best of HOV your gonna need like 5 cds
    2Pac, Biggie, NAS> Pre 97 Jay-Z
Jay-Z> NE Rapper You Name Since

  22. AJB4 says:

I think 50 has more of an impact on Hip Hop than Jay

  23. Shady says:

Jeeeez Wale jus suck his dick y dont ya……. if all u have to argue with is album sales……. and you say Jay is an inspiration for stage performence…..remind me not to check out ur show homie. I wonder how many #1′s Eminem, Dre or Biggie would have had if there were shellin them out like Jay.

  24. Mokh says:

Eminem>every other rapper (that’s the stan side of me talkin)
i say that till now we can’t tell who is the best… let’s wait till the music stops!!! then we’ll be able to judge them!

  25. AJB4 says:

but DEF Em>>Jay “Renegade” is a perfect example of this

  26. jamdawham says:

I gotta disagree on jay’s voice. His voice is one of his greatest attributes.

  27. B.Dot says:

    ^
but even Jay says his voice isn’t great.

  28. Taylor Swift says:

Yo Jay-Z is nice, and one of the best to ever do it…but…If 2pac were alive Jay would be dead cuz Pac hated him. If Biggie were alive, Jay WOULDN’t be making Songs about NYC and bein King cuz Biggie would have shit on him. 11 #1 albums = 4 #1 singles out of all of them, thats a joke. And only 1 as a solo artist the other times w/ Mariah, Beyonce and Rihanna. And as far as the 11 #1′s is concerned, if he went up against Eminem all of those time, he’d be #2…

  29. Slow Ur Roll, Know Ur Roll says:

    @ B.Dot
Ok his voice sux and he has a terrible stage show.
So why does he sell out every tour? and MSG in seconds?
What makes him not better then all these other rappers is the real ?
Why did Live nation give him 150 mil with no Album and no artists?
N anythings he accomplishes is based off his Music

  30. Slow Ur Roll, Know Ur Roll says:

@ EVERYONE STOP THE BUT……. SHIT
IF Jordan wasnt around Ewing, Barkley, Reggie,Stock and Malone would have titles
and if Len Bias wouldnt have dropped Dead he would locked down MJ

    GTFOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. mike says:

    nas’ best emcee
    jayz is best rapper
(both) alive !!! right now !! til the casket drops ;) or just the career stops !

  32. 106 says:

Yall dudes are delusional saying em over jay. Please Em has 5 albums jay has 11 jay has 4 classic albums thats why he the best. End of discussion. Don’t talk stage presence Jay does a 2 hour set that he can’t even fit all his hits in. Only Pac got that many songs in the catalog. You ever been to a Jay concert i seen Russian dudes who didnt even speak english receiting every lyric. Consitency that nobody has been able to match in the history os Hip Hop.

  33. B.Dot says:

    @ B.Dot
Ok his voice sux and he has a terrible stage show.

    ^
i think most people go to a Jay show for the live performance of MUSIC as opposed to him. I mean the guy has a crazy catalogue.

After his 9/11 concert i think jay cemeneted his place as the greatest. Pac and Big are dead. they’re not coming back. Jay has surpassed his peers in terms of creating impactful music that shapes the culture. Jay’s the same age (if not a year younger/older) than Rakim and that guy couldnt make a good record if he tried.

  34. AshesToAshes says:

    @B.Doct

2Pac is dead but his music is here, the type of music that even if jay released 20 more album couldn’t outdo it.

  35. Vega says:

@ B.dot thats true cause that new rakim album was TRASH!!! and as far as cemeneted him as the greatest i think he did that when the black album came out! as far as ICON STAUTS yea he did it at 9/11……

  36. @Hiphop81 says:

Hov is by far the Greatest Performer of all time…..studio, stage, whatever. I’ve been to many Hov shows…Hard Knock Life Tour, Billboard Awards, BP3, etc…No one does it better. Just look….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti8NKKEgsBc Hit the 7:21 mark…”10 #1 Albums in a row who better than me?”…..he points me out with the white shirt and Red Yankee…

  37. Trey says:

Skip Bayless is a fukkin idiot claimin he knows Hip Hop..

Lil Wayne and Eminem as greatest of all time… Wigga please!

Eminem is Top 10-15 material… Lil Wayne is trash…

  38. Da Business says:

I agree w/ a lot of u guys, but we’ve got to remember that like sports it’s all about them rings. Ex. Manning is the better QB vs. Brady, but bcuz Brady has more rings and wins when it matters he’d be considered the better QB.

That’s the case w/ Jay, he has the STATS. I personally feel that 3stacks will rhyme circles around Jay, but the STATS r undeniable. @ the end of the day when it’s all said and done, that’s what will be remembered 100 yrs down the line…STATS!

Really @ this point it’s useless to have this debate. Jay is the goat, tho he’s not mine Jay is the MJ(both of them) of the rap game.

It sux but that’s the way it is. Look @ Berry Sanders and Emmitt Smith, Sanders was the better back…but AGAIN Smith has the rings and the….STATS!

  39. Vega says:

@ashestoashes 2pac is one of the legends but as far as album wise everybody starter jumping on tupac shit when All eyez on me once that came out everybody went back to see what he was talking about with 2Pacalypse Now Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. Me Against the World and honestly these albums are good not the greatest it was GOOD….but when jay-z came out he had already classics song with RD and its still played till this day!! it took a min before people could say yea i could fuck with 2pac

  40. Da Business says:

    And Em is Larry Bird.

  41. 3Stacks says:

1.Nas is a great MC but he doesn’t always know how to pick beats thus not many classic albums

    2. EM has an extensive vocab, flow and knows how to spit but most of his subject matter is weird can’t relate to

3.Jay-z has witty lyrics, decent flow and usually a good ear for beats but subject matter is minimum and self-exalting

  42. TheRealest says:

All three of them had no Idea what they where talking about, Wale was talking about sales, Vanilla Ice sold MILLIONS of records, does that mean he should be considered top 10 of all time? The Jonas Brothers sell millions of records are they better then the Beatles? Skip said he thinks Eminem and Lil wayne are the GOAT? I almost felt ashamed for him after he said that, pop culture and commercialisim has brain washed alot of people. Atleast jalen mentioned pac. I think since its been 14 years people forgot how great Pac truely was, not just as a rapper, but as a visionary and a leader. While I give jay his props and think he is deff. talanted in no way should he be considered the greatest of all time. The new generation is just brainwashed, as a high school kid who the GOAT is and they’ll say lil wayne or jay-z which is crazy, Im only 21 but you cant forget PAC, in my eyes he will always be the GOAT.

  43. Gabriel says:

Why isn’t anyone on here on Skip Bayless for saying Lil Wayne is the GOAT? And he even said awhile back that Rebirth was “breaking new ground”

  44. B.Dot says:

    @B.Doct

2Pac is dead but his music is here, the type of music that even if jay released 20 more album couldn’t outdo it.

    ^
i love Tupac as much as the next guy. While he has a bulk of classics, the posthumous releases are far from. I would have to check, but I think Jay’s catalogue has surpassed Pac’s.

  45. RRL says:

Yall got any other parts of the show?

    Any sports talk?

    I missed it….

  46. B.Dot says:

too much to rip. we get straight to the good stuff

  47. DGtheEnigma says:

It was said earlier, but how can Jay-Z be considered the greatest when out of 11 albums only 4 are considered great/classics? That’s less than a 50% average!!!!!

Personally, I think Jay has meant the most to the culture post-Pac/BIG, but that doesn’t make someone the greatest. In hip-hop, much like sports, the topic of “the greatest” is too subjective, thus not even worth wasting energy debating.

For all of this talk of Jay-Z , it could be argued that Kanye West has had a greater impact on hip-hop in 6 years that Jay-Z has had in 14. Although Jay brought Kanye to light, Kanye has been carrying Jay-Z since 2001! Almost 10 years!!!

    “Ain’t no best…” – Nasir Jones, Ether

  48. 3Stacks says:

2Pac ‘s music had a great message far touching than any other rapper.Pac’s personality was bigger than the music

As an MC Tupac is overrated Biggie could rap circles round him with ease like many others before and present. The notion that 2Pac was the be all and end all of greatness is far-fetched.The man is a legend no doubt but more so for his personality than his skills on the mic.
