Lupe Fiasco Explains His Jay-Z Comment
Friday, March 12 2010 8:19 AM EST | Posted by: Big Homie | Posted in: Blog, True Story1515 caught up with Wasalu on the red carpet at the MTV documentary Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro Wednesday night in NYC. Lu says he’s reached out to Hov and reveals that a new collaboration is in the works. He also clarifies his ”I don’t want to be like Jay-Z” comment.
“[My comments were] just an example using him of how people rate success. There’s an idea of the status quo that every rapper wants to be Jay-Z. Nah. Every rapper does not want to be Jay-Z. Every rapper don’t wanna be Kanye West. Everybody don’t wanna be Lil Wayne. They wanna be who they are. You’re a fool trying to chase that success down and manage it like that. I always look at my success as further than a dollar sign, further than record sales. Everybody thinks because you’re black and you’re from the ‘hood, you wanna be Jay-Z. There’s kids who wanna be astrophysicists and don’t care about rap. That should be OK. You should be OK just being you, working your regular job and being happy. That’s why I made that statement. I felt it need to be said.”

Disrespectful views at Tha Kang, T.I.? Nah, Ms. Banks you're out of line. Yeah Harris' Aussie ain't that dope but neither are you. I just saw you at Coachella and I wasn't impressed. You got the look, the swag, the tough talk but where are the tunes? "212" is alright but that's where it stops. According to Jay-Z's old board rules: You have no right to diss Tip. Look in the mirror and ask yourself: How many classic albums have you created? Are you on anyone's top 10 MCs list? Do you have any hardware on your walls, ma? Cliff is right. Keep him out of the girlfight. You're heavy in these tweets, but I hope you're finding time to create music that backs up your buzz. Or you'll soon be begone like Kreayshawn. You young ladies today bore me. *Turns up Mia X CD* No Limit forever!
The best things in life are free, but hopping on Hov's press conference stage uninvited is gon cost cha. Whatcha did was wrong! ⎯B.Dot
Um yes he does donate time. THAT WHY HE CLIMBED THE DAMN MOUNTAIN. some people are so ignorant. sorry.
I think yall missing the point. He tried to use Jay to make his point. He said I don’t want to be worth 400 Mil like Jay or perform on every award show???? Why you in the game then? Thats what he shouldve clarified. We all know what he was trying to say he just shouldn’t act like Jay is only about Bentleys and chains to make his point that all. On another note that new song he got I’m Beaming is fire.
@Shawn
well he just climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise awareness on the Global Water Crisis. see http://www.summitonthesummit.com
his music is education, and probably brought hip hop into the conflict diamond issue in Africa, as well as the Child Soldier issue in countries like Uganda. see Conflict Diamonds & Little Weapon.
and uh…he brought Gemini (Gem Stones), Stack Bundles, Matthew Santos, Sarah Green, Soundtrakk, Nikki Jean, and Hey Champ in under F&F, his production company.
and overall, i’d say his music beyond those two tracks i noted is pretty educational. The Cool, the entire album/concept is kicking knowledge all over it. image wise, lu is a good look for hip hop. talent wise too…he just get’s over looked in the media (our media as well.)
@Nathaniel..
Good looking on the info Bro. I really wasn’t trying to sideways so I’m glad you can point me in the right direction of finding Lupe’s efforts.
I’ve never been vested in Lupe one way or another so I don’t actively look for Lupe’s activity.
Good looking.
@Ultimate Shagrin User….I think that comment was directed at me. And you’re correct, I’m ignorant about Lupe’s dealing outside of music. So that’s why I asked. Maybe you should stop getting so emotional and share whatever knowledge you have on a topic, any topic. I had no idea he climbed a mountain.
Lol @ Lupe

Lupe……what the fuck ever. On with more important news. Lupe is fucking garbage…who cares what the fuck Lupe thinks? Jay even touching his first joint was a total mistake….Lame ass rapper. Lupe…stop reaching and find some fucking relevance instead of running ya’ mouth and putting other rappers name in ya’ mouth. Worst than Game with that shit.

Jump off a cliff.
@shawn i think everyone above ^ answered your questions. No need to offend him or send hate his way he wasn’t informed so he asked questions thats the way to do it some of yall should learn from @shawn.
Oh and @united.artists and whoever you cosigned track 12 track off the BLUEPRINT 3 is dedicated to yall. PEACE
*DonT HATE ON MY OPINION* haha sorry had to do that.
Do yourself a favor Lu and don’t get near a mic unless your spittin’……. geesh.
ya need to be MARCHING in the streets for HEALTHCARE for YU and yours. Ya got to show support for ur PREZ ! I will lead one since I’m in an electric whheelchair.
^ lol wtf???????????????????????
Matt Santos, He Say and Hey Champ were dope… Lupe slipped. Being Jay-Z is hard though. He’s a rapper. Nothing more. Nothing less. Get in where you fit in.
Lupe is cool, because he drops 1 BANGIN SINGLE per album. Stats like that will keep you in the game, but it won’t get you Jigga or Kanye success, so I can dig where he’s comin’ from… I think
I don’t think half of you have even heard Lupe or understand half of what he says.
He says not everyone wants to be like Jay, and here you’re laughing how he could never be like Jay.
How does your lone braincell maneuver?
LOL @ lupe saying he doesnt wanna blow up like jay. his first album had jay-z, neptunes, kanye west, a smash single, and critical success, and he still didnt go platinum. he was getting gassed. now lupe gasses himself. lupe is a fraud. he didnt start rhyming like a geek till his label told him too. he wasnt rhyming about kick flips till his label told him to. he can rap, but hes a queer.
^^^^
U obviously failed any type of reading comprehension in school if you think that’s what Lupe is trying to say. Gtfoh.
i know what lupe is tryin to say, and its irrelevant. nigga talks too much. end of story. drop a album. shut the fuck up. this nigga couldnt be jay if he wanted, jay was dropping an album every year when he hit while lupe drops an album and goes into hiding when it flops. he doesnt care about sales, but he cries everytime his songs leak. he pushes fans further away every time he opens his mouth. hes a good rapper, he should stick to rappin. he climbed a mountain, who really cares? holla when lupe makes a classic that public embraces. he needs to humble himself.
For a man who’s supposed to be so deft he can’t seem to make a succinct comment.
He would’ve been better off saying something in regards to “pursuing your own personal success” etc because he did a piss poor job contrasting Jay’s success.
And it goes beyond ‘black kids in the hood’ Lupe.
Tons of kids have grown up listening to Jay’s music and watching his professional progress and aspire to acquire a similair style of social leverage, and THATS the underlying message to be taken from someone like Jay.
I would’nt be suprised though if this were a celver PR move.
More important than content is something that starts a ‘conversation’ on twitter and blogs.
That, more than content, creates public dialogue and artistic relevance.
Smart fans realized that he wasn’t hating on Jay-Z.
Dumbed down ones are the ones that blew this out of proportion.
LMAO THIS THE SAME NIGGA THAT MADE SINGLES FOR TWILIGHT?! HES TRYING TO GET 10 YEAR OLD GIRLS IN HIS FANBASE WHILE SAYING THIS BULLSHIT ROFL
wtf is up with the hair ad thats some wack ish
I’m as big a Lupe fan as anyone because of what he says in his music. That’s all anyone of us should go by. But to say this after making a song for Twilight? GTFOH with that shit. Of course this was a publicity stunt. We can all but assume that Lupe is a highly intelligent individual, so he knew damn well what it meant to say Jay Z’s name, especially in this context. Now he doesn’t look like the bad guy and STILL has his name all over the blogosphere.
The fact that this comment has been blown up as it has been just proves that, as usual, ignorance reigns supreme.

He said every RAPPER don’t want to be like Jay-Z THEN says some kids from the hood want to be astrophysicist…??? thought you were talkin about rappers face it he put his foot in his mouth simple and yes most aspiring RAPPERS want to be successful like other successful rappers…lol Lupe YOU apparently are no intellectual maverick as you were TRYING to portray w/ the tone of your comment just RAP kid.
Listen Lupe Fiasco is not just trying to become the best rapper alive he’s trying to spread a message to the people which is stop following the influence of the media, which is trying to be gangsta or pimp or whatever. Look at what he believes and follows
lupe wasn’t dissin jay at all.he’s standing up for the sake of emceeing.back n the days rappers strive to be diffrent from the next.everybody brought something to the table, today rappers try to sound like, jay, wayne t.i. or whosever hot at the time.he saying be you and don’t try to be them.but most fans don’t research other artist cause the listen to what is being fed to them.now jay got money no doubt, but jay fans are only loyal as his next hit.every year jay sales has not been the same.he haven’t out sold his hard knock life album to this date.but in lupe case.he has true loyal fans that will come to see him rather he has a album or not.
