Anthony Mandler On Drake’s “Over” Video

Rap-Up sat down with “Over” director Anthony Mandler. He discussed linking up with Drake, the video’s concept and Drizzy’s input.

What can you tell us about the concept for Drake’s “Over” video?
I can tell you that it’s not gonna be what you expect. Drake and I were very conscious about trying to push the limits and trying to push things forward. He came to me because he wanted to throw away the conventions of a medium, and take chances and be daring and take certain themes that are relevant to him and try to visualize them in not the obvious way.

maybe that’d be easier if the song had a subject. niggas can barely match songs with visuals these days because of the random, unfocused subject matter.

…so they end up flailing their arms in front of green screens for 3:30. blah

*watches Ice Cube’s “Today Was A Good Day” video.

  3. Interscope Employee says:

they were saying the same thing bout the “best i ever had” video :/

  4. Let the illuminati chatter start if it looks like anything like the ‘Run This Town’ video he directed…

  5. Aftashok says:

i agree w/Nathaniel about the unfocused ass songs…. ‘Over’ KINDA has a “theme”, but we’ll see what happens – Anthony Mandler usually makes quality videos though…

  6. DGtheEnigma says:

When will this guys learn? Stop overhyping/building anticipation for the album/videos! The main reason the Drake backlash is building is because everything Drake does is billed as “pushing the limits, moving forward, etc.”

Just give the date of the release of the album/videos and let the opinions flow in. The more Drake/producers/directors use these type of phrases, the more people are gonna hate the final product no matter if it’s great or if it’s meh.

Here’s to hoping something in hip-hop lives up to the hype a la LeBron in 2003.

This the same nigga dat be making them illuminati videos .. so Drake gonna have all dat shit in his new video

  8. eXquire says:

    I agree with DG..

real rap, just let the shit come out, and niggas either like it or they don’t. It’s not like the production value of the video is gonna have an impact on his sales. Niggas be having Trailers for video’s now… shit’s so wack… what happened to just letting shit come out…

not sure what the concept is.. looks like the typical hip hop video to me… i like drake, but i dont feel like hes being himself anymore..i thought it was also kinda funny how the darkskinned girl got all blurred in the backround tho.. gosh drake was she that fugly??? lol anywho, we need to let more of the nappy haired girls be in the videos and not get the good ol face blurring thing all upon the face…. gosh im sure you can find some pretty black girls SOMEWHERE….
